Noise sustained propagation: Local versus global noise
We expand on prior results on noise supported signal propagation in arrays of
coupled bistable elements. We present and compare experimental and numerical
results for kink propagation under the influence of local and global
fluctuations. As demonstrated previously for local noise, an optimum range of
global noise power exists for which the medium acts as a reliable transmission
``channel''. We discuss implications for propagation failure in a model of
cardiac tissue and present a general theoretical framework based on discrete
kink statistics. Valid for generic bistable chains, the theory captures the

Occupations and geographical distribution of mesothelioma in Switzerland 1989-2018 - record linkage of an asbestos-exposed population with the Swiss National Cohort
OBJECTIVE
We investigated the possibility of linking the data of the Swiss Laboratory for Particle Analysis (Silag), a valuable but incomplete data source in the field of asbestos-related diseases, to the Swiss National Cohort (SNC). With the resulting comprehensive dataset, we intended to provide a source for further research in the field. We also conducted preliminary analyses of data focusing on occupations and regional distribution of malignant pleural mesothelioma cases.
METHODS
Data of asbestos-exposed individuals available from the Silag were anonymously linked with the SNC by means of deterministic record linkage. From this linkage, data on occupation classified according to the international standard classification of occupations (ISCO) as well as the canton of residence in Switzerland could be retrieved.
RESULTS
Of 838 eligible individuals from the Silag data, 788 (94.0%) could be linked to the SNC database, including 476 mesothelioma cases. In 340 cases of the latter, data on occupation and industries were available. Although the majority of them were blue-collar workers, a significant proportion (n = 44, 12.9%) had executive professions. The Canton of residence in 1990 was established in 430 of subjects with mesothelioma. A cluster could be identified in eastern Switzerland, especially in the canton of Glarus.
CONCLUSIONS
It was possible to link the datasets to a large extent thereby creating a data source for further research. Of note, the linkage provided data on occupation of a selection of mesothelioma cases in Switzerland
If only they knew! A nonâinferiority randomized controlled trial comparing deceptive and openâlabel placebo in healthy individuals
BackgroundPlacebo use is widespread in clinical practice. However, they are most often administered deceptively rather than openly. It is often suggested that openâlabel placebos (OLP) are less effective than deceptive placebos (DP). This study aimed to compare the use of DP and OLP treatments to reduce pain in healthy volunteers.MethodsWe conducted a nonâinferiority, parallel, randomized, controlled trial, which also included a nested crossâover noâtreatment condition. This study was conducted at a university clinic in France.ResultsWe included 60 subjects and the main result shows that the OLP was not inferior to the DP by a margin of 10âmm. The mean difference between both groups regarding intensity of pain was 0.7âmm with a 95% compatibility interval (95% CI) of ]ââ; 5.4], and 97.5% CI of ]ââ; 6.3]. Secondary outcomes require cautious interpretation of the effect of placebo versus no treatment due to a timeâtreatment interaction.ConclusionThe study indicates that OLP may perform just as well as DP and could provide support for the use of OLP as an ethical alternative to DP when they are to be used in a clinical setting. If only patients knew about the placebo nature of some treatments they are receiving, unnecessary lies could be avoided while maintaining similar placebo effects.SignificanceThis study is the first to show nonâinferiority of placebos administered honestly, also called OLP, compared to DP in reducing pain. This suggests that OLP could be as effective as their deceptive counterparts while having the ethical advantage of not being required to lie. If deception is not a necessary condition for efficacy, OLP should be preferred over DP
Clustering and Sharing Incentives in BitTorrent Systems
Peer-to-peer protocols play an increasingly instrumental role in Internet
content distribution. Consequently, it is important to gain a full
understanding of how these protocols behave in practice and how their
parameters impact overall performance. We present the first experimental
investigation of the peer selection strategy of the popular BitTorrent protocol
in an instrumented private torrent. By observing the decisions of more than 40
nodes, we validate three BitTorrent properties that, though widely believed to
hold, have not been demonstrated experimentally. These include the clustering
of similar-bandwidth peers, the effectiveness of BitTorrent's sharing
incentives, and the peers' high average upload utilization. In addition, our
results show that BitTorrent's new choking algorithm in seed state provides
uniform service to all peers, and that an underprovisioned initial seed leads
to the absence of peer clustering and less effective sharing incentives. Based
on our observations, we provide guidelines for seed provisioning by content
providers, and discuss a tracker protocol extension that addresses an
identified limitation of the protocol
The detailed mechanism of the eta production in pp scattering up to the Tlab = 4.5 GeV
Contrary to very early beliefs, the experimental cross section data for the
eta production in proton-proton scattering are well described if pi and only
eta meson exchange diagrams are used to calculate the Born term. The inclusion
of initial and final state interactions is done in the factorization
approximation by using the inverse square of the Jost function. The two body
Jost functions are obtained from the S matrices in the low energy effective
range approximation. The danger of double counting in the p-eta final state
interaction is discussed. It is shown that higher partial waves in
meson-nucleon amplitudes do not contribute significantly bellow excess energy
of Q=100 MeV. Known difficulties of reducing the multi resonance model to a

Linguistic expert creation in online health practices
In this chapter, we explore how the construction of an expert identity varies across online e-health settings with different socio-technological features. Our methodology is qualitative in nature and draws on insights from discourse analysis, in particular positioning theory. Results show that four aspects of creating expertise are vital: the embeddedness of the posi-tioning strategies in the online health context, the interplay between these strategies within each setting, the interactivity of the medium, and the fact that not only professionals, but also clients and laypeople construct their expertise. The results reveal that previously found strategies to create expertise (e.g., using jargon or showing empathy) could be confirmed in our corpus, and that the interplay of several strategies is in fact needed to create credible and trustworthy expert identities for all participants involved.
