Introduction: For obvious reasons, athletes are at greater risk of sustaining a lumber (lower) spine injury due to physical activity. To our knowledge, no previous studies have examined the prevalence of low back pain (LBP) in a Tunisian sports and physical education institute.Aim: To assess the prevalence of LBP in different sports among students studying in a sports and physical education institute in Tunisia, to determine the causes of the injuries, and to propose solutions. Methods: A total of 3,379 boys and 2,579 girls were studied. A retrospective cross-sectional survey was conducted on a group of students aged 18.524.5 years at the Higher Institute of Sport and Physical Education of Sfax to estimate the prevalence of LBP and its relation to the type of sports. Data on age, weight, height, smoking, and the sport in which the student was injured in the low back were collected from the institute health service records from 2005 until 2013.Results: LBP was reported by 879 of the 5,958 study participants (14.8%). The prevalence of LBP was significantly higher (pB0.001) in females (17.6%) than in males (12.5%). LBP prevalence did not differ by body mass index or smoking habit (p0.05). The sports associated with the higher rates of LBP were gymnastics, judo, handball, and volleyball, followed by basketball and athletics. Conclusion: LBP is frequent among undergraduate students of a sports and physical education institute in Tunisia. It is strongly associated with fatigue after the long periods of training in different sports. Gymnastics, judo, handball, and volleyball were identified as high-risk sports for causing LBP.Keywords: low back pain; sports students; sports training; risk factor

The effect of pomegranate peel extract (PPE) on the oxidative stability of corn oil during heating was studied. Oxidation was followed by determining peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), free fatty acid value (FFA), conjugated dienes (CD), conjugated trienes hydroperoxides (CT) and the calculated total oxidation value (TOTOX). Polyphenol (TPC) and ortho-diphenol (TOPC) contents as well as the antioxidant activity of each oil sample were evaluated before and after heating. PPE showed a significant inhibitory effect on lipid oxidation. Heating samples for 8 hours supplemented by PPE to a level of 1000 ppm resulted in the highest significant decreases in investigated indices compared to the control and BHT values. It was concluded that the antioxidant activity of PPE delayed oxidation and can be used in the food industry to prevent and reduce lipid deterioration in oil.

Introduction: Laryngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is unusual. It accounts for 0.25% of all malignant tumors in the larynx, and only about 120 cases have been reported in the literature until now.Purpose: We report a case of subglottic ACC and examine the clinical, diagnostic, histological and therapeutic features and the outcome of this tumor in this location.Case report: A 75-year-old man, presented with a laryngeal dyspnea. The computed tomography of the larynx showed a posterior subglottic tumor. The panendoscopy revealed a large nonulcerated submucosal tumor in the posterior wall of the subglottic area. Biopsies made the diagnosis of laryngeal ACC. The patient had total laryngectomy with total thyroidectomyand bilateral lateral neck dissection. Histological examination didn't find neck metastases. The surgery was followed by a postoperative radiotherapy. There were no local recurrence or distant metastases during one year and half of follow-up.Conclusions: ACC shows a very slow growth pattern. Its diagnosis is often delayed and its treatment is based on surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. This tumor is characterized by the occurrence of local recurrence and distant metastases often several years after treatment of the primary tumor. Keywords: adenoid cystic carcinoma, subglottic, surgery, postoperative radiotherapy, survival

    Carcinome parathyroidien

    Get PDF
Parathyroid cancer is uncommon and its etiology is largely unknown. It is difficult to diagnose. The preoperative syndrome is unusually severe primary hyperparathyroidism. Intraoperatively, many characteristics of the tumor may be highly suggestive. Confirmation requires pathological analysis of the operative specimens and the diagnosis is strengthened in the presence of associated Shantz and Castelman criteria. Specific immunohistochemical techniques have been shown to be contributive. The diagnosis can be further supported by the clinical course of local recurrence or metastatic spread.Treatment of this tumor is primarly surgical. In some cases, postoperative radiotherapy may improve locoregional control of the tumor. The disease control can be monitored by regula assay of serum calcium and the parathormone. We report a case of parathyroid carcinoma, with special emphasis on the diagnostic modalities of this tumor, its treatmentand its prognosis. Keywords: Hypercalcemia, Primary Hyperparathyroidism, Parathyroid carcinoma, Surgery

The aim of this work was to investigate ultrasound (US)-assisted green solvent extraction of valuable compounds from the microalgae Nannochloropsis spp. Individual green solvents (water, ethanol (EtOH), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) and binary mixture of solvents (water-DMSO and water-EtOH) were used for the extraction procedures. Maximum total phenolic compounds yield (Yp 0.33) was obtained after US pre-treatment (W = 400 W, 15 min), being almost 5-folds higher compared to that found for the untreated samples and aqueous extraction (Yp 0.06). The highest yield of total chlorophylls (Yc 0.043) was obtained after US (W = 400 W, 7.5 min), being more than 9-folds higher than those obtained for the untreated samples and aqueous extraction (Yc 0.004). The recovery efficiency decreased as DMSO > EtOH > H2O. The optimal conditions to recover phenolic compounds and chlorophylls from microalgae were obtained after US pre-treatment (400 W, 5 min), binary mixtures of solvents (water-DMSO and water-EtOH) at 25–30%, and microalgae concentration of 10%

Objectives : Pleormorphic adenoma is a benign tumor of salivary gland. It mainly occurs in the parotid gland. The submandibular and minor salivary glands are rarely sites of occurrence. We describe the features of pleomorphic adenoma occurring at these sites.Material and methods: Between 2000 and 2009, 15 cases of pleomorphic adenoma occurring externly to the parotid have been collected. Results: Tumors were seen in the submandibular gland in 40 % of cases, in the hard palate in 33 % of cases, in the upper lip in 20 % of cases and in the parapharyngeal space in 7 % of cases. The mean age of patients was 48 years. The majority of cases were female. All patients were operated. We didn't report recurrence or malignants tumors after one year follow-up.Conclusion: After the parotid gland, the most common site of a pleomorphic adenoma is the submandibular gland followedby minor salivary gland of palate and lips. Each localisation has his clinical and therapeutic particularities.Key words : pleomorphic adenoma, submandibular gland, minor salivary glan
