    Intermolecular interactions in N-(ferrocenylmethyl)anthracene-9-carboxamide

    The title compound, [Fe(C₅H₅)(C₂₁H₁₆NO)], was synthesized from the coupling reaction of anthracene-9-carboxylic acid and ferrocenylmethylamine. The ferrocenyl (Fc) group and the anthracene ring system both lie approximately orthogonal to the amide moiety. An amide-amide interaction (along the a axis) is the principal interaction [N...O = 2.910 (2) Å]. A C-H...π(arene) interaction [C...centroid = 3.573 (2) Å] and a C-H...O interaction [C...O = 3.275 (3) Å] complete the hydrogen bonding; two short (Fc)C...C(anthracene) contacts are also present

    Cepstral trajectories in linguistic units for text-independent speaker recognition

Inspired by successful work in forensic speaker identification, we extend the approach based on temporal contours of formant frequencies in linguistic units to design a fully automatic system that puts together both forensic and automatic speaker recognition worlds. The combination of MFCC features and unit-dependent trajectories provides a powerful tool to extract individualizing information. At a fine-grained level, we provide a calibrated likelihood ratio per linguistic unit under analysis (extremely useful in applications such as forensics), and at a coarse-grained level, we combine the individual contributions of the different units to obtain a highly discriminative single system. This approach has been tested with NIST SRE 2006 datasets and protocols, consisting of 9,720 trials from 219 male speakers for the 1side-1side English-only task, and development data being extracted from 367 male speakers from 1,808 conversations from NIST SRE 2004 and 2005 datasetsSupported by MEC grant PR-2010-123, MICINN project TEC09-14179, ForBayes project CCG10-UAM/TIC-5792 and Cátedra UAM-Telefónica

    Preferences for support services among adolescents and young adults with cancer or a blood disorder: A discrete choice experiment

    Background: Life-threatening illnesses in young people are traumatic for patients and their families. Support services can help patients and families deal with various non-medical impacts of diagnosis, disease and treatment. The aim of this study was to determine which types of support are most valued by adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer or blood disorders and their families. Method: A discrete choice experiment (DCE). Separate experiments were conducted with AYA and their carers. Results: Completed surveys were returned by 83 patients and 78 carers. AYA preferred emotional support for themselves (either by counsellors and/or peers), emotional support for their family, financial support and assistance returning to school/work over services relating to cultural and spiritual needs. Covariate analysis indicated female AYA were more likely than males to prefer emotional support, while males were more likely to prefer assistance returning to work/school. Carers preferred emotional support for their AYA and assistance returning to school/work. Like AYA, they were indifferent about services relating to cultural and spiritual needs. Conclusion: Providing the types of support services that people prefer should maximise effectiveness. This study suggests that AYA patients require support services that included financial aid, assistance returning to work/study, emotional support for themselves and for their family. © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd

    Uneven distribution of cobamide biosynthesis and dependence in bacteria predicted by comparative genomics.

    The vitamin B12 family of cofactors known as cobamides are essential for a variety of microbial metabolisms. We used comparative genomics of 11,000 bacterial species to analyze the extent and distribution of cobamide production and use across bacteria. We find that 86% of bacteria in this data set have at least one of 15 cobamide-dependent enzyme families, but only 37% are predicted to synthesize cobamides de novo. The distribution of cobamide biosynthesis and use vary at the phylum level. While 57% of Actinobacteria are predicted to biosynthesize cobamides, only 0.6% of Bacteroidetes have the complete pathway, yet 96% of species in this phylum have cobamide-dependent enzymes. The form of cobamide produced by the bacteria could be predicted for 58% of cobamide-producing species, based on the presence of signature lower ligand biosynthesis and attachment genes. Our predictions also revealed that 17% of bacteria have partial biosynthetic pathways, yet have the potential to salvage cobamide precursors. Bacteria with a partial cobamide biosynthesis pathway include those in a newly defined, experimentally verified category of bacteria lacking the first step in the biosynthesis pathway. These predictions highlight the importance of cobamide and cobamide precursor salvaging as examples of nutritional dependencies in bacteria

    Than SQL is the general idea of this Hadoop implementation. The advancement of technology generates growing amount of data and demands a new method to process the big data. The performance of this hadoop implementation was also compared with that of SQL to prove hadoop\u27s novelty in processing big data. Moreover different hadoop\u27s implementations – such as various number of nodes, use of a combiner, and use of different block sizes – were evaluated.Hadoop was implemented for five queries (or problems) in processing the library circulation data. Those five problems are finding the numbers of borrowing transactions categorized by the audio-video types, collection types, titles, locations, and users\u27 departments.Some conclusions can be drawn based on the hadoop mapreduce implementation. Hadoop\u27s performance tops SQL\u27s when large data are being processed. The more the number of computer nodes, the faster the mapreduce application is to complete its execution. Use of a combiner can speed up the application\u27s execution. The arrangement with full data blocks can give better execution time than that with non-full data blocks does. In this hadoop implementation, the execution time using the block size of 128 MB is smaller than that of 28 MB and 512 MB

    Clinical translation of [18F]ICMT-11 for measuring chemotherapy-induced caspase 3/7 activation in breast and lung cancer

    Background: Effective anticancer therapy is thought to involve induction of tumour cell death through apoptosis and/or necrosis. [18F]ICMT-11, an isatin sulfonamide caspase-3/7-specific radiotracer, has been developed for PET imaging and shown to have favourable dosimetry, safety, and biodistribution. We report the translation of [18F]ICMT-11 PET to measure chemotherapy-induced caspase-3/7 activation in breast and lung cancer patients receiving first-line therapy. Results: Breast tumour SUVmax of [18F]ICMT-11 was low at baseline and unchanged following therapy. Measurement of M30/M60 cytokeratin-18 cleavage products showed that therapy was predominantly not apoptosis in nature. While increases in caspase-3 staining on breast histology were seen, post-treatment caspase-3 positivity values were only approximately 1%; this low level of caspase-3 could have limited sensitive detection by [18F]ICMT-11-PET. Fourteen out of 15 breast cancer patients responded to first–line chemotherapy (complete or partial response); one patient had stable disease. Four patients showed increases in regions of high tumour [18F]ICMT-11 intensity on voxel-wise analysis of tumour data (classed as PADS); response was not exclusive to patients with this phenotype. In patients with lung cancer, multi-parametric [18F]ICMT-11 PET and MRI (diffusion-weighted- and dynamic contrast enhanced-MRI) showed that PET changes were concordant with cell death in the absence of significant perfusion changes. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential use of [18F]ICMT-11 PET as a promising candidate for non-invasive imaging of caspase3/7 activation, and the difficulties encountered in assessing early-treatment responses. We summarize that tumour response could occur in the absence of predominant chemotherapy-induced caspase-3/7 activation measured non-invasively across entire tumour lesions in patients with breast and lung cancer
