What do Topologists want from Seiberg--Witten theory? (A review of four-dimensional topology for physicists)

In 1983, Donaldson shocked the topology world by using instantons from physics to prove new theorems about four-dimensional manifolds, and he developed new topological invariants. In 1988, Witten showed how these invariants could be obtained by correlation functions for a twisted N=2 SUSY gauge theory. In 1994, Seiberg and Witten discovered dualities for such theories, and in particular, developed a new way of looking at four-dimensional manifolds that turns out to be easier, and is conjectured to be equivalent to, Donaldson theory. This review describes the development of this mathematical subject, and shows how the physics played a pivotal role in the current understanding of this area of topology.Comment: 51 pages, 10 figures, 8 postscript files. Vocational High School is course with aim to prepare the students to have specific skills by having practical activities based on its study program. It has the same purpose with English for specific purposes (ESP) course which aims to meet the studentsā€™ specific language need. ESP courses help students to use English appropriately as well as accurately to perform their jobs in a various situations where they encounter their English language function. ESP course often begins with the studentsā€™ need. Studentsā€™ need analysis is needed to be identified to be able to meet the effective learning material based on what the students really need. This study aims to investigate the writing materials needs of eleventh grade students of Office Administration study program in Vocational High School from viewpoints of students. This study used descriptive qualitative analysis with questionnaire and interview method to collect the data. The subjects of the research were eleventh grade of Office Administration students that consisted of 34 students by using purposive sampling. The result indicated that the students have several needs in terms of target needs and learning needs. Target needs are divided into necessities, wants, and lacks. Based on the result of target needs, the students are lack of component of writing skills including express ideas, write with correct organization, use correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, and use appropriate vocabulary based on the context of the text. Thus, the students need and want to learn those components of writing skills. Meanwhile, learning needs are divided into input, procedure, setting, and accessibility. The input is divided into content of materials, activities, and design. The teachers should pay attention more on those aspects to fulfill the studentsā€™ need to help them transition successfully to their future careers after graduation

Optical conductivity of the Kondo insulator YbB_12: Gap formation and low-energy excitations

    Get PDF
Optical reflectivity experiments have been conducted on single crystals of the Kondo insulator YbB_12 in order to obtain its optical conductivity, \sigma(\omega). Upon cooling below 70 K, a strong supression of \sigma(\omega) is seen in the far-infrared region, indicating the opening of an energy gap of ~ 25 meV. This gap development is coincident with a rapid decrease in the magnetic susceptibility, which shows that the gap opening has significant influence on magnetic properties. A narrow, asymmetric peak is observed at ~40 meV in \sigma(\omega), which is attributed to optical transitions between the Yb 4f-derived states across the gap. In addition, a broad peak is observed at ~0.25 eV. This peak is attributed to transitions between Yb 4f-derived states and p-d band, and is reminiscent of similar peaks previously observed for rare-earth hexaborides.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a disease characterized by increasing blood pressure above the normal limit with systolic is more than 140 mmHg and diastolic is over 90 mmHg. Unhealthy lifestyle like consuming higher salinity food, junk food, food containing cholesterol, and lack of physical activities can increase the number of hypertension case. Many things can be done to lower high blood pressure such as by applying non-pharmacological therapy, one of them is by granting young coconut water, it has some contents like sugar, vitamin C, protein, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. High content of potassium in young coconut water can lower blood pressure of the hypertension patients. This study aimed at knowing the influence of granting young coconut water for lowering blood pressure of hypertension patients. This study used pre experimental design with one group pretest and posttest design with the number of sample was 72 respondents using purposive sampling. The data was analyzed using Wilcoxon test to compare pretest and posttest result. The result of this study showed that there was a significant influence between the average of pre and post after granting young coconut water and z value was 5,729 and z table with a = 1,96 meant that z value was higher than z table therefore it could be concluded that there was an influence of granting young coconut water for lowering high blood pressure of hypertension patients in Banjar Pisang Taro village Gianyar regency. &nbsp

Background: Depression was a psychiatric disorder that often occurred towards mothers were related to the psychiatric problems for their children. It little was known regarding the effects of maternal depression on the emotional and behavioral disorders to children. Aims: The present study compared the incidence of emotional and behavioral disorders towards the children and maternal depression and children of mothers were not depressed. Methods: It was observational analytic research that was designed a cross-sectional. There were 74 mothers who came to the psychiatry clinic at RSUP Sanglah from December 2010 to February 2011 and met the inclusion criteria were included in the present research. They were screened by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). There were 37 maternal depression and 37 non-maternal depression. The mother characteristics were analyzed excluding the confounding variables. In order to assess the differences percentages of emotional and behavioral disorders among children of maternal depression and children of non-maternal depression was conducted by Chi-square test for categorical variables, and assess the depression degree, a long depression, compliance, and comorbidities. The differences were considered significant if P <0.05

Numerical prediction of cavitation erosion in cavitating flow

In this study bubble behavior in cavitating flow is analyzed and prediction of cavitation erosion in 2D cavitating flow around ClarkY 11.7 % hydrofoil at several cavitation is performed by impact pressure induced by bubble collapse. Our numerical method predicts that the impact energy is small if variation of cavitating flow is small and that the position of peak impact energy moves downstream with the decrease in cavitation number until the maximum sheet cavity length becomes larger than chord length. When the maximum sheet cavity length becomes larger than chord length, there are not obvious peak values and relatively weak erosion occurs. And it is found that high impact pressures are mainly induced by bubbles in a cloud and in the vicinity of sheet cavity termination during a cloud collapse. Therefore large impact energy occurs when the cloud cavity collapses near the hydrofoil, the sheet cavity termination is on the hydrofoil and the number of bubble is large in these cavities.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/84264/1/CAV2009-final67.pd

Peningkatan Efisiensi Produksi Baglog melalui Percepatan Waktu Siklus Produksi di Usaha Lancar Abadi Pendekatan Critical Path Method

The Enhancement of Baglog Production Efficiency through Acceleration Time of Production Cycle Critical Path Method Approach Lancar Abadi Company which has produced oyster mushrooms media (baglog) is involving many business players. The research objectives are to find out (1) mechanism of Supply Chain Management; (2) actual time and critical path on one cycle of production through Critical Path Method; and (3) crush time due to addition cost through Critical Path Method. The research uses descriptive quantitative method with model Performance of Activity approachment and Critical Path Method. Cost, time, capacity, and capability dimentions in Performance of Activity has been used to described performance activities that are part of the process in Supply Chain Management. The results show that (i) the baglog materials has been directly bought to the company by the suppliers, meanwhile, baglog had been directly obtained by the consumer through making an order to the Lancar Abadi Company; (ii) The selected critical path consisting of the preparation, sifting, composting, draining, mixing, filling, until the mycelium growth with total 514 hours/cycle (iii) By the addition of acceleration cost about Rp262.968,98, the company was able to speed up the production cycle about 32,57 hours (1.36 days). So that, company will be able to increase the additional 1.12 production cycle times/year which was equivalent to 899 baglog/year
