    Update on Membranoproliferative GN

    Membranoproliferative GN represents a pattern of injury seen on light microscopy. Historically, findings on electron microscopy have been used to further subclassify this pathologic entity. Recent advances in understanding of the underlying pathobiology have led to a proposed classification scheme based on immunofluorescence findings. Dysregulation of the complement system has been shown to be a major risk factor for the development of a membranoproliferative GN pattern of injury on kidney biopsy.     We consider two-family neutrino oscillations in a medium of continuously-varying density as a limit of the process in a series of constant-density layers. We construct analytic expressions for the conversion amplitude at high energies within a medium with a density profile that is piecewise linear. We compare some cases to understand the type of effects that depend on the order of the material traversed by a neutrino beam.Comment: 10 page

    Unlike in the quark sector where simple S3S_3 permutation symmetries can generate the general features of quark masses and mixings, we find it impossible (under conditions of hierarchy for the charged leptons and without considering the see-saw mechanism or a more elaborate extension of the SM) to guarantee large leptonic mixing angles with any general symmetry or transformation of only known particles.     Investigating genome wide DNA methylation in bronchial and lung fibroblasts from healthy individuals and individuals with COPD

    Rationale: Lung fibroblasts are implicated in respiratory disease pathology including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Phenotypic differences between fibroblasts isolated from the bronchi versus the lung parenchyma have been described but no studies have compared the cell types on a genome wide scale. DNA methylation is a reversible modification of the DNA structure with the ability to affect cell function via the alteration of gene expression. Here we compared genome wide DNA methylation profiles from bronchial and lung fibroblasts and assessed modification to these profiles in cells isolated from individuals with COPD. Methods: DNA was isolated from lung (LgF) and bronchial fibroblasts (BrF) at passage 4 and bisulphite treated. Site specific, quantitative genome wide methylation was determined using the Illumina 450K Infinium Methylation BeadChip array. Linear modelling and DMRcate functions identified differentially methylated sites and regions respectively between BrF and LgF and from cells isolated from healthy individuals versus those with COPD. Results: 3980 CpG (methylation) sites significantly differed, following Bonferroni correction, between BrF and LgF isolated from healthy individuals. These sites had a broad distribution of effect size, with 240 CpG sites displaying a difference in methylation of >50%. 78 of these sites were validated in a second cohort of matched BrF and LgF isolated from the same individuals. There was genomic proximity to these sites and DMRcate was used to refine the individual CpG sites to 5 regions of interest associated with 5 genes; HLX, TWIST1, CREB5, SKAP2 and PRDM16. Differences in methylation were less pronounced when comparing cells isolated from healthy individuals to those with COPD. In BrF 47 DMRcate regions were identified with a maximum difference in methylation of at least 20%. In LgF 3 DMRcate regions were identified with a maximum difference in methylation of at least 20%. Conclusions: DNA methylation profiles are significantly different between BrF and LgF but only small modifications are associated with COPD. Future work will focus on validating a methylation based marker of lung versus bronchial fibroblasts to differentiate cell types by validating our differential DNA methylation observations with gene/protein expression

    High Energy Hadron-Nucleus Cross Sections and Their Extrapolation to Cosmic Ray Energies

    Old models of the scattering of composite systems based on the Glauber model of multiple diffraction are applied to hadron-nucleus scattering. We obtain an excellent fit with only two free parameters to the highest energy hadron-nucleus data available. Because of the quality of the fit and the simplicity of the model it is argued that it should continue to be reliable up to the highest cosmic ray energies. Logarithmic extrapolations of proton-proton and proton-antiproton data are used to calculate the proton-air cross sections at very high energy. Finally, it is observed that if the exponential behavior of the proton-antiproton diffraction peak continues into the few TeV energy range it will violate partial wave unitarity. We propose a simple modification that will guarantee unitarity throughout the cosmic ray energy region.Comment: 8 pages, 9 postscript figures.     On the center-vortex baryonic area law

    We correct an unfortunate error in an earlier work of the author, and show that in center-vortex QCD (gauge group SU(3)) the baryonic area law is the so-called YY law, described by a minimal area with three surfaces spanning the three quark world lines and meeting at a central Steiner line joining the two common meeting points of the world lines. (The earlier claim was that this area law was a so-called Δ\Delta law, involving three extremal areas spanning the three pairs of quark world lines.) We give a preliminary discussion of the extension of these results to SU(N),N>3SU(N), N>3. These results are based on the (correct) baryonic Stokes' theorem given in the earlier work claiming a Δ\Delta law. Behavioral science can help policymakers to spur changes in behaviors that are difficult to explain from a conventional economic perspective and impede economic development. We focus here on two well-documented, often-coinciding psychological phenomena that have particularly wide-ranging implications for development policy: present bias (favoring immediate rewards over long-term considerations) and limited attention. We present a number of general policy recommendations that are informed by insight into these phenomena and offer concrete examples of how the recommendations can be implemented to help low-income individuals improve their lives and reach their long-term goals
