How do impulsivity traits influence problem gambling through gambling motives? The role of perceived gambling risk/benefits.
Although substantial research suggests that motivations have been found to mediate the relationships between impulsivity traits and various forms of substance use, no studies have examined how gambling motives may mediate the relationships between impulsivity traits and problem gambling. The primary purpose of this study was to test an integrative model linking impulsivity traits and gambling problems, evaluating the mediating effects of gambling motives. Participants were 594 students (73% male; mean age =19.92; SD=2.91) enrolled in public high schools or universities. Young people who tend to act rashly in response to extremely positive moods, showed higher enhancement and coping motives, which in turn were positively related to gambling problems. Individuals with higher levels of sensation seeking were more likely to have higher levels of enhancement motives, which in turn were also positively related to gambling problems. The model was examined in several groups, separately for the level of perceived gambling risk/benefits (lower perceived gambling risk, higher perceived gambling risk, lower perceived gambling benefits, and higher perceived gambling benefits). There were significant differences between these groups for this division. These findings suggest that prevention and/or treatment strategies might want to consider the modelâs variables, including impulsivity traits and gambling motives, in accordance with individual levels of perceived gambling risk/benefits
Polarized Diffuse Emission at 2.3 GHz in a High Galactic Latitude Area
Polarized diffuse emission observations at 2.3 GHz in a high Galactic
latitude area are presented. The 2\degr X 2\degr field, centred in
(\alpha=5^h,\delta=-49\degr), is located in the region observed by the
BOOMERanG experiment. Our observations has been carried out with the Parkes
Radio telescope and represent the highest frequency detection done to date in
low emission areas. Because of a weaker Faraday rotation action, the high
frequency allows an estimate of the Galactic synchrotron contamination of the
Cosmic Microwave Background Polarization (CMBP) that is more reliable than that
done at 1.4 GHz. We find that the angular power spectra of the E- and B-modes
have slopes of \beta_E = -1.46 +/- 0.14 and \beta_B = -1.87 +/- 0.22,
indicating a flattening with respect to 1.4 GHz. Extrapolated up to 32 GHz, the
E-mode spectrum is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of the CMBP,
allowing a clean detection even at this frequency. The best improvement
concerns the B-mode, for which our single-dish observations provide the first
estimate of the contamination on angular scales close to the CMBP peak (about 2
degrees). We find that the CMBP B-mode should be stronger than synchrotron
contamination at 90 GHz for models with T/S > 0.01. This low level could move
down to 60-70 GHz the optimal window for CMBP measures.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
Equivalence of Bose-Einstein condensation and symmetry breaking
Based on a classic paper by Ginibre [Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 8} 26 (1968)]
it is shown that whenever Bogoliubov's approximation, that is, the replacement
of a_0 and a_0^* by complex numbers in the Hamiltonian, asymptotically yields
the right pressure, it also implies the asymptotic equality of ||^2/V and
/V in symmetry breaking fields, irrespective of the existence or
absence of Bose-Einstein condensation. Because the former was proved by Ginibre
to hold for absolutely integrable superstable pair interactions, the latter is
equally valid in this case. Apart from Ginibre's work, our proof uses only a

Improving the post-meal experience of hospitalised patients with eating disorders using visuospatial, verbal and somatic activities
BACKGROUND: This study compares the effects of different cognitive tasks on post-meal negative affect, positive affect, intrusive thoughts and intrusive images of hospitalised patients with eating disorders. METHODS: Twenty-five participants were recruited from an eating disorder service. Using a within-subjects design, participants performed one of the following tasks for 15Â min: the game 'Tetris' (visuospatial), a general knowledge 'Quiz' (verbal), 'Braille' translation (somatic) and 'Sitting Quietly' (control). In total, participants completed each task on three occasions. RESULTS: The visuospatial, verbal and somatic tasks had beneficial effects on all positive and negative indicators, when compared with 'Sitting Quietly'. Visuospatial and somatic tasks were more effective at reducing intrusive imagery than the verbal task. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that certain engaging activities can help hospitalised patients with eating disorders manage the difficult post-meal period
Zero-energy states in graphene quantum dots and rings
We present exact analytical zero-energy solutions for a class of smooth
decaying potentials, showing that the full confinement of charge carriers in
electrostatic potentials in graphene quantum dots and rings is indeed possible
without recourse to magnetic fields. These exact solutions allow us to draw
conclusions on the general requirements for the potential to support fully
confined states, including a critical value of the potential strength and
