Localization of Two-Dimensional Quantum Walks
The Grover walk, which is related to the Grover's search algorithm on a
quantum computer, is one of the typical discrete time quantum walks. However, a
localization of the two-dimensional Grover walk starting from a fixed point is
striking different from other types of quantum walks. The present paper
explains the reason why the walker who moves according to the degree-four
Grover's operator can remain at the starting point with a high probability. It
is shown that the key factor for the localization is due to the degeneration of
eigenvalues of the time evolution operator. In fact, the global time evolution
of the quantum walk on a large lattice is mainly determined by the degree of
degeneration. The dependence of the localization on the initial state is also

The City MISS: development of a scale to measure stigma of perinatal mental illness
Objective: This study aimed to develop and validate a scale to measure perceived stigma for perinatal mental illness in women.
Background: Stigma is one of the most frequently cited barriers to seeking treatment and many women with perinatal mental illness fail to get the treatment they need. However, there is no psychometric scale that measures how women may experience the unique aspects of perinatal mental illness stigma.
Method: A draft scale of 30 items was developed from a literature review. Women with perinatal mental illness (n = 279) were recruited to complete the City Mental Illness Stigma Scale. Concurrent validity was measured using the Internalised Stigma of Mental Illness Scale. Factor analysis was used to create the final scale.
Results: The final 15-item City Mental Illness Stigma Scale has a three-factor structure: perceived external stigma, internal stigma and disclosure stigma. The scale accounted for 54% of the variance and had good internal reliability and concurrent validity.
Conclusion: The City Mental Illness Stigma Scale appears to be a valid measure which provides a potentially useful tool for clinical practice and research in stigma and perinatal mental illness, including assessing the prevalence and characteristics of stigma. This research can be used to inform interventions to reduce or address the stigma experienced by some women with perinatal mental illness

Tidal Streams as Probes of the Galactic Potential
We explore the use of tidal streams from Galactic satellites to recover the
potential of the Milky Way. Our study is motivated both by the discovery of the
first lengthy stellar stream in the halo (\cite{it98}) and by the prospect of
measuring proper motions of stars brighter than 20th magnitude in such a stream
with an accuracy of yr, as will be possible with the Space
Interferometry Mission (SIM). We assume that the heliocentric radial velocities
of these stars can be determined from supporting ground-based spectroscopic
surveys, and that the mass and phase-space coordinates of the Galactic
satellite with which they are associated will also be known to SIM accuracy.
Using results from numerical simulations as trial data sets, we find that, if
we assume the correct form for the Galactic potential, we can predict the
distances to the stars as a consequence of the narrow distribution of energy
expected along the streams. We develop an algorithm to evaluate the accuracy of
any adopted potential by requiring that the satellite and stars recombine
within a Galactic lifetime when their current phase-space coordinates are
integrated backwards. When applied to a four-dimensional grid of triaxial
logarithmic potentials, with varying circular velocities, axis ratios and
orientation of the major-axis in the disk plane, the algorithm can recover the
parameters used for the Milky Way in a simulated data set to within a few
percent using only 100 stars in a tidal stream.Comment: Revised version - original algorithm generalised to be applicable to

Study of Chromium-Frit-Type Coatings for High-Temperature Protection of Molybdenum
The achievement of more compact and efficient power plants for aircraft is dependent, among other factors, on the perfection of heat-resisting materials that are superior to those in current use. Molybdenum is one of the high-melting metals (melting point, 4750 F). It is fairly abundant and also can be worked into many of the shapes required in modern power plants. To permit its widespread use at elevated temperatures, however, some means must first be found to prevent its rapid oxidation. The application of a protective coating is one method that might be used to achieve this goal. In the present work, a number of chromium-frit-type coatings were studied. These were bonded to molybdenum specimens by firing in controlled atmospheres to temperatures in the range of 2400 to 2700 F

The Semiclassical and Quantum Regimes of Superradiant Light Scattering from a Bose-Einstein Condensate
We show that many features of the recent experiments of Schneble et al. [D.
Schneble, Y. Torii, M. Boyd, E.W. Streed, D.E. Pritchard and W. Ketterle,
Science vol. 300, p. 475 (2003)], which demonstrate two different regimes of
light scattering by a Bose-Einstein condensate, can be described using a
one-dimensional mean-field quantum CARL model, where optical amplification
occurs simultaneously with the production of a periodic density modulation in
the atomic medium. The two regimes of light scattering observed in these
experiments, originally described as ``Kapiza-Dirac scattering'' and
``Superradiant Rayleigh scattering'', can be interpreted as the semiclassical

Comparison of Generic and Proprietary Sodium Stibogluconate for the Treatment of Visceral Leishmaniasis in Kenya.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the use of generic and proprietary sodium stibogluconate for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar). METHODS: A total of 102 patients with confirmed kala-azar were treated in a mission hospital in West Pokot region, Kenya, with sodium stibogluconate (20 mg/kg/day for 30 days)--either as Pentostam (PSM) or generic sodium stibogluconate (SSG); 51 patients were allocated alternately to each treatment group. FINDINGS: There were no significant differences in baseline demographic characteristics or disease severity, or in events during treatment. There were 3 deaths in the PSM group and 1 in the SSG group; 2 patients defaulted in each group. Only 1 out of 80 test-of-cure splenic aspirates was positive for Leishmania spp.; this patient was in the SSG group. Follow-up after > or = 6 months showed that 6 out of 58 patients had relapsed, 5 in the SSG group and 1 in the PSM group. No outcome variable was significantly different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The availability of cheaper generic sodium stibogluconate, subject to rigid quality controls, now makes it possible for the health authorities in kala-azar endemic areas to provide treatment to many more patients in Africa
