    Magnitude of Students’ Attitude towards Vocational Education in Selected Secondary Schools in Tanzania

    This study aimed at examining students’ attitude towards vocational education in Ilemela Municipality in Mwanza region to inform on magnitude of negative attitude towards Vocational education in Tanzania. Researchers examined the magnitude of form four students’ emotional, beliefs and behavioral attitudes toward vocational education. This paper presents results from 355 student respondents randomly selected from eleven selected secondary schools in Ilemela municipality. The study adopted cross-sectional survey design in which self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data. Data were analyzed through descriptive technique, and presented in form of tables of frequencies and percentages. Overall results reveal that most of respondents had positive attitudes toward vocational education. The average percentage score of attitudes towards vocational education considering three attitude dimensions was 91.35, 8.35, and 0.28 in the positive, neutral, and negative categories, respectively. Despite most of respondents having a positive attitude towards vocational education, a few, 42.2 percent indicated interest to study vocational subjects. This implies that most of respondents have perceived value of vocational education, but they are not willing undergo training in vocational education related skills. This contradiction is assumed to be associated with the influence from extraordinary difference in terms of ‘importance’ and ‘respect’ laid between blue-collar jobs and white-collar jobs. In reference to this, blue-collar jobs attract importance in some key aspects relating to employment, but attract less respect from society. Despite robust international evidence on attitude towards VET, there is a dearth of studies in Tanzania examining students’ attitude towards vocational education in particular form four students (grade twelve students). The study indicates that students have positive emotional and beliefs attitudes, but have negative behavioral attitude towards vocational education. This means the student respondents are not likely to join vocational education institution after their secondary education. In this respect, the study recommends teachers and other education stakeholder to promote all forms of attitudes to secondary school students as far as vocational education is concerned.     How Society Can Maintain Human-Centric Artificial Intelligence

    Although not a goal universally held, maintaining human-centric artificial intelligence is necessary for society's long-term stability. Fortunately, the legal and technological problems of maintaining control are actually fairly well understood and amenable to engineering. The real problem is establishing the social and political will for assigning and maintaining accountability for artifacts when these artefacts are generated or used. In this chapter we review the necessity and tractability of maintaining human control, and the mechanisms by which such control can be achieved. What makes the problem both most interesting and most threatening is that achieving consensus around any human-centred approach requires at least some measure of agreement on broad existential concerns

    An integrated bidirectional multi-channel opto-electro arbitrary waveform stimulator for treating motor neurone disease

    This paper presents a prototype integrated bidirectional stimulator ASIC capable of mixed opto-electro stimulation and electrophysiological signal recording. The development is part of the research into a fully implantable device for treating motor neurone disease using optogenetics and stem cell technology. The ASIC consists of 4 stimulator units, each featuring 16-channel optical and electrical stimulation using arbitrary current waveforms with an amplitude up to 16 mA and a frequency from 1.5 Hz to 50 kHz, and a recording front-end with a programmable bandwidth of 1 Hz to 4 kHz, and a programmable amplifier gain up to 74 dB. The ASIC was implemented in a 0.18μm CMOS technology. Simulated performance in stimulation and recording is presented

    Prosthetic Knee

    Amputations, specifically lower limb amputations, are common in Sub Saharan Africa and across the broader global community largely due to infection and disease. Our project, The Prosthetic Knee Team, partners with the orthopedic workshop at the CURE International Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya to create a prosthetic knee design for a specific type of amputation known as a Knee Disarticulation (also called through-knee). Currently, the orthopedic workshop is only able to provide one very expensive prosthetic knee option for these patients, and they often elect to undergo a second surgery, a trans-femoral amputation, because the cost of the second surgery and trans-femoral prosthesis combined is less than the currently available through-knee prosthetic. The goal of our project is to provide the orthopedic workshop with a manufacturable prosthetic knee design that provides through-knee amputees with a cheaper prosthetic option and removes the need to have a second amputation above the knee. Throughout the past two semesters, our focus was on organizing collected data, researching knee-disarticulations, and communicating with our client to more fully understand the scope of our project. After determining that moving forward our project will be manufacturing the prosthetic knees at Messiah College’s machine shop and shipping them to CURE Kenya to be fit on patients, we began to brainstorm potential design ideas. We are presently working on modifying and improving our chosen design to best meet all of the specifications laid out by our partner.     This paper explores first-year undergraduates’ perceptions of the transition from studying geography at pre-university level to studying for a degree. This move is the largest step students make in their education, and the debate about it in the UK has been reignited due to the government’s planned changes to A-level geography. However, missing from most of this debate is an appreciation of the way in which geography students themselves perceive their transition to university. This paper begins to rectify this absence. Using student insights, we show that their main concern is acquiring the higher level skills required for university learning

    Plasma Proteomic Profile Predicts Survival in Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction

    BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether the plasma proteome adds value to established predictors in heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). We sought to derive and validate a plasma proteomic risk score (PRS) for survival in patients with HFrEF (HFrEF-PRS). Methods: Patients meeting Framingham criteria for HF with EF\u3c50% were enrolled (n=1017) and plasma underwent SOMAscan® profiling (4453 targets). Patients were randomly divided 2:1 into derivation and validation cohorts. The HFrEF-PRS was derived using Cox regression of all-cause mortality adjusted for clinical score and N-Terminal pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (NTproBNP), then was tested in the validation cohort. Risk stratification improvement was evaluated by C-statistic, integrated discrimination index (IDI), continuous net reclassification index (NRI), and median improvement in risk score (MIRS) for 1-year and 3-year mortality. Results: Participants\u27 mean age was 68 years, 48% identified as African American, 35% were female and 296 deaths occurred. In derivation (n=681), 128 proteins associated with mortality, 8 comprising the optimized HFrEF-PRS. In validation (n=336) the HFrEF-PRS associated with mortality (hazard ratio (HR) =2.27 [95% Confidence interval (95%CI) 1.84-2.82], p=6.3x10(-14)), Kaplan-Meier curves differed significantly between HFrEF-PRS quartiles (p=2.2x10(-6)), and it remained significant after adjustment for clinical score and NTproBNP (HR=1.37, 95%CI 1.05-1.79, p=0.021). The HFrEF-PRS improved metrics of risk stratification (C-statistic change=0.009, p=0.612; IDI=0.041, p=0.010; NRI=0.391, p=0.078; MIRS=0.039, p=0.016) and associated with cardiovascular death and HF phenotypes (e.g. 6-minute walk distance, EF change). Most HFrEF-PRS proteins had little known connection to HFrEF. Conclusions: A plasma multi-protein score improved risk stratification in HFrEF patients and identified novel candidates

    The architecture of the hierarchical triple star KOI 928 from eclipse timing variations seen in Kepler photometry

    We present a hierarchical triple star system (KIC 9140402) where a low mass eclipsing binary orbits a more massive third star. The orbital period of the binary (4.98829 Days) is determined by the eclipse times seen in photometry from NASA's Kepler spacecraft. The periodically changing tidal field, due to the eccentric orbit of the binary about the tertiary, causes a change in the orbital period of the binary. The resulting eclipse timing variations provide insight into the dynamics and architecture of this system and allow the inference of the total mass of the binary (0.424±0.017M⊙0.424 \pm 0.017 \text{M}_\odot) and the orbital parameters of the binary about the central star.Comment: Submitted to MNRAS Letters.
