The K+K^+ and K0K^0 meson mass difference induces the mixing of the a00(980)a^0_0(980) and f0(980)f_0(980) resonances, the amplitude of which, between the K+KK^+K^- and K0Kˉ0K^0\bar K^0 thresholds, is large in magnitude, of the order of mKmK02mK+2αmK2 m_{K}\sqrt{m^2_{K^0}-m^2_{K^+}}\approx\sqrt\alpha m^2_K, and possesses the phase sharply varying by about 90^\circ. We suggest performing the polarized target experiments on the reaction πpηπ0n\pi^-p\to\eta\pi^0n at high energy in which the fact of the existence of a00(980)f0(980)a^0_0(980)-f_0(980) mixing can be unambiguously and very easily established through the presence of a strong jump in the azimuthal asymmetry of the ηπ0\eta\pi^0 SS wave production cross section near the KKˉK\bar K thresholds. The presented estimates of the polarization effect to be expected in experiment are to a great extent model independent.Comment: RevTeX, 9 pages, 1 figure.

Phylogeography of Japanese encephalitis virus:genotype is associated with climate

The circulation of vector-borne zoonotic viruses is largely determined by the overlap in the geographical distributions of virus-competent vectors and reservoir hosts. What is less clear are the factors influencing the distribution of virus-specific lineages. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the most important etiologic agent of epidemic encephalitis worldwide, and is primarily maintained between vertebrate reservoir hosts (avian and swine) and culicine mosquitoes. There are five genotypes of JEV: GI-V. In recent years, GI has displaced GIII as the dominant JEV genotype and GV has re-emerged after almost 60 years of undetected virus circulation. JEV is found throughout most of Asia, extending from maritime Siberia in the north to Australia in the south, and as far as Pakistan to the west and Saipan to the east. Transmission of JEV in temperate zones is epidemic with the majority of cases occurring in summer months, while transmission in tropical zones is endemic and occurs year-round at lower rates. To test the hypothesis that viruses circulating in these two geographical zones are genetically distinct, we applied Bayesian phylogeographic, categorical data analysis and phylogeny-trait association test techniques to the largest JEV dataset compiled to date, representing the envelope (E) gene of 487 isolates collected from 12 countries over 75 years. We demonstrated that GIII and the recently emerged GI-b are temperate genotypes likely maintained year-round in northern latitudes, while GI-a and GII are tropical genotypes likely maintained primarily through mosquito-avian and mosquito-swine transmission cycles. This study represents a new paradigm directly linking viral molecular evolution and climate

Generation of polarized electron beams through self-injection in the interaction of a laser with a pre-polarized plasma

Polarized electron beam production via laser wakefield acceleration in pre-polarized plasma is investigated by particle-in-cell simulations. The evolution of the electron beam polarization is studied based on the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation for the transverse and longitudinal self-injection, and the depolarization process is found to be influenced by the injection schemes. In the case of transverse self-injection as found typically in the bubble regime, the spin precession of the accelerated electrons is mainly influenced by the wakefield. However, in the case of longitudinal injection in the quasi-one-dimensional regime (for example, F. Y. Li \emph{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 135002 (2013)), the direction of electron spin oscillates in the laser filed. Since the electrons move around the laser axis, the net influence of the laser field is nearly zero and the contribution of the wakefield can be ignored. Finally, an ultra-short electron beam with polarization of 99%99\% can be obtained using longitudinal self-injection.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Manifestation of the a00(980)f0(980)a^0_0(980)-f_0(980) mixing in the reaction πpηπ0n\pi^-p\to\eta\pi^0n on a polarized target

It is argued that the single-spin asymmetry in the reaction πpa00(980)n(ηπ0)Sn\pi^-p\to a_0^0(980)n\to(\eta\pi^0)_S n is extremely sensitive to the mixing of the a00(980)a^0_0(980) and f0(980)f_0(980) resonances. It is shown that at low momentum transfers (namely, in any one of the intervals 0t0.025,...,0.10\leq-t\leq0.025,...,0.1 GeV2^2) the normalized asymmetry, which can take the values from -1 to 1, must undergo a jump in magnitude close to 1 in the ηπ0\eta\pi^0 invariant mass region between 0.965 GeV and 1.01 GeV. The strong asymmetry jump is the straightforward manifestation of the a00(980)f0(980)a^0_0(980)-f_0(980) mixing. For observing the jump, any very high quality ηπ0\eta\pi^0 mass resolution is not required. The energy dependence of the polarization effect is expected to be rather weak. Therefore, it can be investigated at any high energy, for example, in the range from eight to 100 GeV.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures. Three figures and discussion added; version published in PR

Nucleotides and nucleosides are not only involved in cellular metabolism but also act extracellularly via P1 and P2 receptors, to elicit a wide variety of physiological and pathophysiological responses through paracrine and autocrine signalling pathways. For the first time, we have used an ion-pair reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet (UV)-coupled method to rapidly and simultaneously quantify 12 different nucleotides and nucleosides (adenosine triphosphate, adenosine diphosphate, adenosine monophosphate, adenosine, uridine triphosphate, uridine diphosphate, uridine monophosphate, uridine, guanosine triphosphate, guanosine diphosphate, guanosine monophosphate, guanosine): (1) released from a mouse renal cell line (M1 cortical collecting duct) and (2) in human biological samples (i.e., urine). To facilitate analysis of urine samples, a solid-phase extraction step was incorporated (overall recovery rate ? 98 %). All samples were analyzed following injection (100 ?l) into a Synergi Polar-RP 80 Å (250 × 4.6 mm) reversed-phase column with a particle size of 10 ?m, protected with a guard column. A gradient elution profile was run with a mobile phase (phosphate buffer plus ion-pairing agent tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate; pH 6) in 2-30 % acetonitrile (v/v) for 35 min (including equilibration time) at 1 ml min(-1) flow rate. Eluted compounds were detected by UV absorbance at 254 nm and quantified using standard curves for nucleotide and nucleoside mixtures of known concentration. Following validation (specificity, linearity, limits of detection and quantitation, system precision, accuracy, and intermediate precision parameters), this protocol was successfully and reproducibly used to quantify picomolar to nanomolar concentrations of nucleosides and nucleotides in isotonic and hypotonic cell buffers that transiently bathed M1 cells, and urine samples from normal subjects and overactive bladder patients

A multi-start heuristic for multiplicative depth minimization of boolean circuits

    Get PDF
In this work we propose a multi-start heuristic which aims at minimizing the multiplicative depth of boolean circuits. The multiplicative depth objective is encountered in the field of homomorphic encryption where ciphertext size depends on the number of consecutive multiplications. The heuristic is based on rewrite operators for multiplicative depth-2 paths. Even if the proposed rewrite operators are simple and easy to understand the experimental results show that they are rather powerful. The multiplicative depth of the benchmarked circuits was hugely improved. In average the obtained multiplicative depths were lower by more than 3 times than the initial ones. The proposed rewrite operators are not limited to boolean circuits and can also be used for arithmetic circuits

Forward K+ production in subthreshold pA collisions at 1.0 GeV

    Get PDF
K+ meson production in pA (A = C, Cu, Au) collisions has been studied using the ANKE spectrometer at an internal target position of the COSY-Juelich accelerator. The complete momentum spectrum of kaons emitted at forward angles, theta < 12 degrees, has been measured for a beam energy of T(p)=1.0 GeV, far below the free NN threshold of 1.58 GeV. The spectrum does not follow a thermal distribution at low kaon momenta and the larger momenta reflect a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
