New Integrable Multi-Component NLS Type Equations on Symmetric Spaces: Z_4 and Z_6 Reductions
The reductions of the multi-component nonlinear Schrodinger (MNLS) type
models related to C.I and D.III type symmetric spaces are studied. We pay
special attention to the MNLS related to the sp(4), so(10) and so(12) Lie
algebras. The MNLS related to sp(4) is a three-component MNLS which finds
applications to Bose-Einstein condensates. The MNLS related to so(12) and
so(10) Lie algebras after convenient Z_6 or Z_4 reductions reduce to three and
four-component MNLS showing new types of chi ^(3)-interactions that are
integrable. We briefly explain how these new types of MNLS can be integrated by
the inverse scattering method. The spectral properties of the Lax operators L
and the corresponding recursion operator Lambda are outlined. Applications to

Simulation and Robust Modifications of Estimates in Branching Processes
This study is focused on the comparison and modification of different estimates arising in the branching processes. Simulations of models with or without migration are put through. Due to the complexity of the computations the algorithms are designed with the language of technical computing MATLAB. Using the simulations, estimates of the o spring mean of the generated processes are calculated. It is well known in the literature that under certain conditions the asymptotic distribution of the estimates is proved to be normal. Using the asymptotic normality a modified method of maximum likelihood is proposed. The aim is to obtain trimmed maximum likelihood estimates based on several sample paths with the same number of generations. Thus in a natural way the observations, inconsistent with the aprior information about the asymptotic normality are excluded from the model. First-Principles Study of Optical Absorption Energies, Ligand Field and Spin-Hamiltonian Parameters of Cr<sup>3+</sup> Ions in Emeralds
Herein, we study the electronic structure, energies, and vibronic structure of optical d-d transitions of Cr3+ ions doped in beryl (Be3Si6Al2O18:Cr3+, emerald). A computational protocol is developed that combines periodic density functional theory (for modeling of the bulk crystalline lattice of emerald) and the multireference configuration interaction complete active space self-consistent field method supplemented with n-electron valence second-order perturbation theory (for the calculation of the energy levels, wave functions, and spin-Hamiltonian and ligand-field parameters of the trigonal Cr3+ centers in the [CrO6]9â clusters embedded in an extended point charge field). Ligand-field parameters were extracted from mapping the effective ligand-field Hamiltonian onto the full many-particle Hamiltonian from one side and from a direct fit to energies of computed d-d transitions on the other side. These have been analyzed using ab initio ligand-field theory. The quality of the theoretical predictions is critically assessed through a detailed comparison with the available experimental data

SERS analysis of Ag nanostructures produced by ion-beam deposition
This study deals with the development of a novel technique for formation of advanced Ag nanostructures (NSs) to be applied to high-resolution analyses based on surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). It has direct bearing on human health and food quality, e.g., monitoring small amount or traces of pollutants or undesirable additives. Three types of nanostructured Ag samples were produced using ion-beam deposition at glancing angle (GLAD) on quartz. All fabricated structures were covered with BI-58 pesticide (dimethoate) or Rhodamine 6G (R6G) for testing their potential for use as substrates for (SERS)

Properties of ns-laser processed polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)
The medical-grade polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer is a widely used biomaterial in medicine and for preparation of high-tech devices because of its remarkable properties. In this work, we present the experimental results on drilling holes on the PDMS surface by using ultraviolet, visible or near-infrared ns-laser pulses and on studying the changes of the chemical composition and structure inside the processed areas. The material in the zone of the holes is studied by XRD, ?-Raman analyses and 3D laser microscopy in order to obtain information on the influence of different processing laser parameters, as wavelength, fluence and number of consecutive pulses on the material transformation and its modification
Homologous Seminal Plasma and Glutathione Promote Pre-capacitation Motility and Structural Stability of Cryopreserved Ram Spermatozoa
Reduced glutathione (GSH) and homologous ram seminal plasma (HSP), used as additives in cryopreserving (CP) media prior to freezing, showed conflicting results in retaining structural integrity and progressive motility in post-thawed ram spermatozoa. The aims of this research were (1) to assess the effect of GSH and/or HSP supplementation via soybean-lecithin CP extender on cryopreserved ram spermatozoa viability, morphology and motility pattern; and (2) to assess the effect of incubation in the context of the previous aim. Quantitatively and qualitatively, homogenized and pooled ram ejaculates (N=10) were extended with one of the following extenders Control (C)-tris-based, GSH and HSP-free, experimental-1 (E1)-C + GSH 5 mM, experimental-2 (E2)-C + HSP 20 % and experimental-3 (E3)-GSH 5 mM + HSP 20 %. Following thawing, samples were taken at 0-A nd 3-hours from each group (n=10) and were assessed for spermatozoa viability, morphology, and motility pattern. C-0h samples yielded a spermatozoa population with low viability, altered head morphology and highly deviated motility pattern. E3-3h samples yielded spermatozoa with unaffected viability, head morphology and high progressive motility. In conclusion, E3 extender added to cryopreserved-thawed ram spermatozoa is most efficient in obtaining high viability, unaltered head morphology, and progressive motility
Directed current due to broken time-space symmetry
We consider the classical dynamics of a particle in a one-dimensional
space-periodic potential U(X) = U(X+2\pi) under the influence of a
time-periodic space-homogeneous external field E(t)=E(t+T). If E(t) is neither
symmetric function of t nor antisymmetric under time shifts , an ensemble of trajectories with zero current at t=0 yields a nonzero
finite current as . We explain this effect using symmetry
considerations and perturbation theory. Finally we add dissipation (friction)
and demonstrate that the resulting set of attractors keeps the broken symmetry
property in the basins of attraction and leads to directed currents as well.Comment: 2 figure
Resource use associated with type 2 diabetes in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Eurasia and Turkey: results from the International Diabetes Management Practice Study (IDMPS)
Objective: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its complications form a global healthcare burden but the exact impact in some geographical regions is still not well documented. We describe the healthcare resource usage (HRU) associated with T2D in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Eurasia and Turkey. Research design and methods: In the fifth wave of the International Diabetes Management Practices Study (IDMPS; 2011-2012), we collected self-reported and physician-reported cross-sectional data from 8156 patients from 18 countries across 5 regions, including different types of HRU in the previous 3-6 months. Negative binomial regression was used to identify parameters associated with HRU, using incidence rate ratios (IRRs) to express associations. Results: Patients in Africa (n=2220), the Middle East (n=2065), Eurasia (n=1843), South Asia (n=1195) and Turkey (n=842) experienced an annual hospitalization rate (mean±SD) of 0.6±1.9, 0.3±1.2, 1.7±4.1, 0.4±1.5 and 1.3±2.7, respectively. The annual number of diabetes-related inpatient days (mean±SD) was 4.7 ±22.7, 1.1±6.1, 16.0±30.0, 1.5±6.8 and 10.8±34.3, respectively. Despite some inter-regional heterogeneity, macrovascular complications (IRRs varying between 1.4 and 8.9), microvascular complications (IRRs varying between 3.4 and 4.3) and, to a large extent, inadequate glycemic control (IRRs varying between 1.89 and 10.1), were independent parameters associated with hospitalization in these respective regions. Conclusions: In non-Western countries, macrovascular/microvascular complications and inadequate glycemic control were common and important parameters associated with increased HRU.Centro de EndocrinologĂa Experimental y Aplicad
