    Refracting profiles and generalized holodiagrams

    The recently developed concept of refracting profiles and that of refraction holodiagrams are combined so that the classical Abramson holodiagrams can be generalized taking into account a wider class of wave fronts and refraction at an interface, whenever regions of caustics are avoided. These holodiagrams are obtained as envelopes of specific families of Cartesian Ovals with an appropriate parametrization. Classical and reflecting holodiagrams are particular cases of this class.     A method to construct refracting profiles

    We propose an original method for determining suitable refracting profiles between two media to solve two related problems: to produce a given wave front from a single point source after refraction at the refracting profile, and to focus a given wave front in a fixed point. These profiles are obtained as envelopes of specific families of Cartesian ovals. We study the singularities of these profiles and give a method to construct them from the data of the associated caustic.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure

    In the event radionuclides are accidentally introduced into an estuary, many isotopes would become adsorbed on suspended particles of clay or silt; others would be incorporated into living cellular material (Caritt and Goodgal, 1954; Rice and Willis, 1959). Oysters and other filter feeders in these estuaries are capable of filtering from suspension large quantities of the suspended solids, as well as the larger living cellular material (Haven and Morales-Alamo, 1966a). Ingested material along with the associated radionuclides would be voided as compacted fecal strings or pellets (biodeposits). Many of these fecal pellets may be alternately suspended in the water mass or deposited on the bottom during a single tidal cycle (Haven and Morales-Alamo, 1968). The present paper investigates how particles in the sand or clay size range, along with adsorbed radionuclides, may be mixed into subsurface deposits

    The therapeutic relationship in child psychotherapy: integrating the perspectives of children, parents and therapists

    OBJECTIVES: To describe and analyse the therapeutic relationship integrating the views of children, parents and therapists. METHODS: This study employs a qualitative methodology, assuming a discovery-oriented approach which draws from grounded theory. Twelve psychotherapy triads participated, composed of children aged 6-10, their parents and psychotherapists. Semi-structured follow-up interviews were conducted (N=36), including a drawing in the case of the children. RESULTS: A positive therapeutic relationship with children and parents was viewed as a gradually constructed process, based on a positive emotional encounter between participants. It was facilitated primarily by the therapist's commitment and playful stance, the child and therapist mutual involvement, and the parent's collaboration. These aspects entailed a trustful, validating and caring relationship, that shaped children and parents' motivations towards therapy and facilitated change. CONCLUSIONS: From a multiple-perspective approach, therapy was conceived as a relational experience. The development of positive relationships required different and evolving dispositions from therapy main actors. Therapists' genuine feelings and engagement in therapeutic activity seem central, underlining the importance of addressing relational aspects in child therapy research and training

    MR and CT imaging of pulmonary valved conduits in children and adolescents: normal appearance and complications.

    BACKGROUND: The Contegra® is a conduit made from the bovine jugular vein and then interposed between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. It is used for cardiac malformations in the reconstruction of right ventricular outflow tract. OBJECTIVE: To describe both normal and pathological appearances of the Contegra® in radiological imaging, to describe imaging of complications and to define the role of CT and MRI in postoperative follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-three examinations of 24 patients (17 boys and 7 girls; mean age: 10.8 years old) with Contegra® conduits were reviewed. Anatomical description and measurements of the conduits were performed. Pathological items examined included stenosis, dilatation, plicature or twist, thrombus or vegetations, calcifications and valvular regurgitation. Findings were correlated to the echographic gradient through the conduit when available. RESULTS: CT and MR work-up showed Contegra® stenosis (n = 12), dilatation (n = 9) and plicature or twist (n = 7). CT displayed thrombus or vegetations in the Contegra® in three clinically infected patients. Calcifications of the conduit were present at CT in 12 patients and valvular regurgitation in three patients. The comparison between CT and/or MR results showed a good correlation between the echographic gradient and the presence of stenosis in the Contegra®. CONCLUSION: CT and MR bring additional information about permeability and postoperative anatomy especially when echocardiography is inconclusive. Both techniques depict the normal appearance of the conduit, and allow comparison and precise evaluation of changes in the postoperative follow-up

    An Animal-sediment study in the lower York River : February 1965 to February 1966

    Certain invertebrates are more efficient than others in filtering solids from suspension. An equal degree of variability exists among benthic invertebrates in their ability to mix biodeposits into subsurface sediments. As a result of these differences, the degree to which suspended particulate matter and associated contaminants may be deposited or mixed into sediments may in part depend on the species present, which in turn may be dependent on sediment type. A number of investigators have examined the relation between benthic animal communities and their limiting physical factors (Smith, 1932; Mare, 1942; Dexter, 1947; Holm, 1949; Stic~1ey and Stringer, 1957; Sanders, 1956, 1958, 1960; and Jones, 1961). Except for studies on the effects of thermal effluents (Warinner and Brehmer, 1966) and the relation of the distribution of several species to sediment water (Harrison and Wass, 1965), little is known of such assemblages in the Chesapeake Bay. In this report we will examine the faunal composition at four depths in the York River, Virginia, in terms of the number of species, number of individuals and biomass, and the influence of sediment parameters on these benthic communities
