True contentment is a thing as active as agriculture. It is the power of getting out of any situation all that there is in it. It is arduous and it is rare. It is the discipline of Epiphany. â G. K. Chesterton
Each of these stories has something to do with the idea of epiphany, as I mean it, the appearance or manifestation of something that wasnât present before. The characters in the five stories all have something they are active about, which they are doing in the hopes of some measure of contentment. My interest was to pay attention to them in particular settings and make a realistic gesture towards an understanding which breaks through to them, transcends, in the end. All of them ate set either in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, where my fatherâs family lives, or in Memphis, where I was raised.
My hope was to realistically present the places I have known best and the people who have lived in them and made their own, to honor their manners and the deeper mysteries they point to, as Flannery OâConnor might put it. I am interested in what she called the writerâs problem to operate âat a peculiar crossroads where time and place and eternity somehow meet.â I think the power of the epiphany with which each of these characters meets succeeds or fails in how faithful I have been with those first two aspects.
Wendell Berry wrote to Wes Jackson in Home Economics that âTo call the unknown by its right name, âmystery,â is to suggest that we had better respect the possibility of a larger, unseen pattern that can be damaged or destroyed and, with it, the smaller patterns.â This respecting of mystery points to religion, he says, and this writing was a struggle of faith for me, an attempt to honor by telling of this world and the hopes of the one to come. He also says, âIf we are up against mystery, then we dare act only on the most modest assumptions,â and I think anywhere these stories donât ring true, it suggests I didnât act modestly enough and tended toward explanation. Where they do work best, it was an unexpected moment for me, grace, as for the characters themselves.
In short, in writing them, I hope to learn better how to tell a good story
Angola Cameia Development Casing-Settlement Calculations
The amount of axial settlement of casings supported by regions of axial elastic foundations is computed. The differential equation of axial equilibrium, including the foundation stiffnesses, is solved by use of cubic axial finite elements. The analysis is applied to 101 m of a vertical 914-mm (36-in.) casing supporting a 559-mm (22-in.) casing running from 3 m above the mudline to near the bottom of the 1201-m hole. The upper casing is supported by a region of layered clay sediments. The lower casing has a long openhole region, followed by a bottom region encased in cement. A series of loading increments is applied, with the connection of the tree/blowout preventer (BOP) as the last. The settlement at the mudline was calculated to be less than 0.1 m. This study shows that for weak upper foundations, a good cement job is needed to support the tree/BOP without large mudline settlements
Assessment of Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) of small and Medium Scale Chemical Manufacturing Enterprises (SMCMES) in Enugu Metropolis Nigeria
Background: There is increasing emphasis on safety and health at workplaces since work-related injuries and ill health can ruin lives and affect businesses. The study was aimed at assessing occupational health, safety and environment practices among the Small and Medium scale Chemical Manufacturing Enterprises (SMCME) in Enugu metropolis, Nigeria.Method: A descriptive cross sectional study was carried out among 382 respondents randomly selected from SMCMEs in Enugu metropolis. Semi-structured questionnaire was used to assess the nature of work processes, environmental conditions and prevalence of workplace chemical injury/disease in the last 12 months.Results: Most of the respondents operated both manual and mechanical (77%) process in their work activities. The workplace hazards observed were chemical hazards (33%), ergonomic hazards (21%), mechanical hazards (15%), physical hazards (14%) and psychosocial hazards (14%). Some common health problems were hand injury (12%) and respiratory tract infection (10%) and overall annual prevalence rate was 338 injuries/diseases per 1000 workers.Conclusion/Recommendation: Workers in SMCME ar exposed to hazards due to their poor nature of work process. There is therefore high prevalence rate of preventable work related injuries/diseases. Completeness of the Coulomb scattering wave functions
Completeness of the eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint Hamiltonian, which is
the basic ingredient of quantum mechanics, plays an important role in nuclear
reaction and nuclear structure theory. However, until now, there was no a
formal proof of the completeness of the eigenfunctions of the two-body
Hamiltonian with the Coulomb interaction. Here we present the first formal
proof of the completeness of the two-body Coulomb scattering wave functions for
repulsive unscreened Coulomb potential. To prove the completeness we use the
Newton's method [R. Newton, J. Math Phys., 1, 319 (1960)]. The proof allows us
to claim that the eigenfunctions of the two-body Hamiltonian with the potential
given by the sum of the repulsive Coulomb plus short-range (nuclear) potentials
also form a complete set. It also allows one to extend the Berggren's approach
of modification of the complete set of the eigenfunctions by including the
resonances for charged particles. We also demonstrate that the resonant Gamow
functions with the Coulomb tail can be regularized using Zel'dovich's

Carcass and meat quality of Karacabey Merino and Kivircik lambs under an intensive finishing system
Carcass and meat quality traits of male and female lambs are important considerations in planning gender-based production and developing a marketing strategy for the product. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of sex on carcass and meat quality of Kivircik and Karacabey Merino lambs. Twenty male and 17 female lambs were used. Lambs were weaned at 45 days old and then fed ad libitum with concentrates and roughage until slaughter at 120 days. The study was carried out in two experiments at three-month intervals. Kivircik lambs had greater dressing percentage (47.96% vs 46.49%, P <0.05) and omental-mesenteric fat proportion (1.71% vs 1.10%, P <0.01), while Karacabey Merino lambs had a greater proportion of skin (11.14% vs 9.42%, P =0.001). Breed had no influence on water-holding capacity, shear force, L* and hue values (P >0.05). The meat of Karacabey Merino lambs had greater a*, b* and chroma values after blooming for 24 hours than meat from Kivircik lambs. Male lambs had greater proportions of head (5.39% vs 4.62%, P <0.001), feet (2.65% vs 2.46%, P <0.01) and visceral organs (4.53% vs 4.15%, P <0.05), while females had a greater proportion of visceral fat (1.76% vs 1.05%, P =0.001). Meat from female lambs was darker than meat from male lambs. In conclusion, under intensive conditions, the indigenous Kivircik breed had similar carcass and meat quality characteristics to the Karacabey Merino, a wool and meat breed. Keywords: breed effect; carcass quality; sex; lamb; meat qualit

New Strategies for Defect Passivation in High-Efficiency Perovskite Solar Cells
Lead halide perovskite solar cells now show excellent efficiencies and encouraging levels of stability. Further improvements in performance require better control of the trap states which are considered to be associated with vacancies and defects at crystallite surfaces. Herein, a reflection on the ways in which these traps can be mitigated is presented by improving the quality of the perovskite layer and interfaces in fully assembled device configurations. In this review, the most recent design strategies reported in the literature, which have been explored to tune grain orientation, to passivate defects, and to improve charge-carrier lifetimes, are presented. Specifically, the advances made with single-cation, mixed-cation and/or mixed-halide, and 3D/2D bilayer-based light absorbers are discussed. The interfacial, compositional, and band alignment engineering along with their consequent effects on the open-circuit voltage, power conversion efficiency, and stability are a particular focus
