    Subcritical and supercritical fluid extraction a critical review of its analytical usefulness

    Subcritical R134a is suggested as a low-pressure alternative to supercritical CO2 in the supercritical fluid extraction technology in particular of palm oil application. Therefore, a measurement of solubility of palm oil in subcritical Rl34a will be carried out at temperatures of 40, 60, 70 and 80°C and pressures up to 300 bar. The solubility of carotene are also will be measured using UV Spectrophotometer. Results obtained from this study will be compared with the previous work and for the first time, simulation for the SFE process of palm oil will be performed using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and it will be implemented in comparisons as well when the operating conditions of the previous findings are different from this study. It is expected that the solubility of the palm oil in subcritical Rl34a is much higher than SC-C02, and it is expected that R134a could be a viable alternative solvent to supercritical carbon dioxide as R134a could be perform well at a lower pressure used whereas can achieved a higher solubility compared to SC-C0

    The humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) is one of the fishery commodities with high economic value in both local and International markets. The price of humpback grouper can reach Rp. 200,000 - Rp. 400,000 / kilogram in the local market. The humpback grouper is potentially to be developed in most coastal areas of Indonesia. The conditions of water quality have a very important role for the success of fish culture of humpback grouper. To that end, monitoring and management of water quality are necessary in fish culture. The purpose of this case study is to determine the water quality conditions on humpback grouper culture in BBAP, Situbondo. The study was conducted on 16 January until 16 February 2012. The study method use descriptive method. From the results of water quality analysis, the water in humpback grouper broodstock ponds (I1 and I2) is no smell, no colour water, temperature 26.1-30 oC, salinity 27-35 ppt, dissolved oxygen 3.3-3.9 ppm, ammonia levels <0.001-0.22 ppm, nitrite levels 0.0075-0.085 ppm, alkalinity 110-120 ppm and pH 7.94-8.18. The water in humpback grouper hatchery ponds (B1 and B2) is no smell, green colour water, temperature 26.7-29.3 oC, salinity 27-34 ppt, dissolved oxygen 2.7-3.7 ppm, ammonia levels 0.0781-0.28 ppm, nitrite levels 0.0225-3.3305 ppm, alkalinity 94-126 ppm, and pH 7.14-7.81

    Dengan besarnya potensi yang dimiliki tersebut pemerintah pusat menetapkan Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) sebagai salah satu propinsi sumber sapi potong dan sapi bibit diantara 18 propinsi di tanah air, sehingga kiprah NTB diharapkan mampu mempercepat program nasional percepatan pencapaian swasembada daging sapi (P2SDS). Oleh karena itu strategi yang dilakukan dalam mengembangkan potensi peternakan sapi ini adalah dengan memelihara sapi melalui sistem kandang kolektif untuk Pulau Lombok dan pola padang penggembalaan atau lar/so di Pulau Sumbawa. Sampai dengan pertengahan tahun 2010, terdapat sekitar 880 unit kandang kolektif sapi di pulau lombok dari target 1.000 unit kandang kolektif pada tahun 2013. Adanya jumlah sapi yang tiap tahun mengalami peningkatan maka dibutuhkan penelitian pembuatan sistem informasi giografis (SIG) dan database identifikasi peternak sapi. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menghasilkan produk SIG peternakan sapi dan database identitfikasi kepemilikan sapi di wilayah NTB. Metodologi penelitian digunakan adalah Model air terjun (waterfall) yaitu metode pengembangan sistem informasi dengan cara perencanaan, analisis, desain sistem, coding dan implementasi, sehingga produk dari SIG diperuntukan dapat menghasilkan pemetaan populasi sapi, database identifikasi kepemilikan sapi, jumlah kelompok tani, jumlah sapi yang dimiliki peternak, jumlah sapi yang terjual pasar tradisional, jumlah sapi yang disalurkan keluar daerah dan jumlah populasi yang ada di kabupaten di provinsi NTB

    Exploring Alternative Octane Specification Methods for Improved Gasoline Knock Resistance in Spark-Ignition Engines

    Different octane specification methods were evaluated under rising ethanol blending volumes by adopting a refinery economics model to represent a region in the U.S. It was demonstrated that the traditional octane specification methods, such as the Anti-knock Index (AKI) used in the U.S., or the Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON) used in the EU, can lead to counterintuitive drop in octane sensitivity with increased availability of ethanol. This is undesirable for modern gasoline engines that require fuels with high RON and low MON, but it is a consequence of how a refinery reformulates the gasoline blendstock, resulting in more naphtha being used in the final composition. The use of a new specification method based on octane index (OI), with engine constant K = −1, internalizes the diminishing role that MON plays in modern engines, thus ensures that the desirable anti-knock quality is being met either through higher RON and/or higher sensitivity. Initial assessment suggests a potential engine efficiency benefit (~ 1.5%) to be gained simply by switching from an AKI-based specification method to an equivalent OI-based method

    Nutritional outcomes related to household food insecurity among mothers in rural Malaysia

    During the past two decades, the rates of food insecurity and obesity have risen. Although a relationship between these two seemingly-paradoxical states has not been repeatedly seen in men, research suggests that a correlation between them exists in women. This study examines nutritional outcomes of household food insecurity among mothers in rural Malaysia. A cross-sectional survey of low-income households was conducted, and 223 households with mothers aged 18-55 years, who were non-lactating, non-pregnant, and had at least one child aged 2-12 years, were purposively selected. A questionnaire was administered that included the Radimer/Cornell Scale, items about sociodemographic characteristics, and anthropometric measurements. Of the households, 16.1% were food-secure whereas 83.9% experienced some kind of food insecurity: 29.6% of households were food-insecure, 19.3% contained individuals who were foodinsecure, and 35.0% fell into the 'child hunger' category. The result reported that household-size, total monthly income, income per capita, and food expenditure were significant risk factors of household food insecurity. Although there was a high prevalence of overweight and obese mothers (52%) and 47.1% had at-risk waist-circumference (=80 cm), no significant association was found between food insecurity, body mass index, and waist-circumference. In conclusion, the rates of household food insecurity and overweight and obesity were high in the study population, although they are looking paradoxical. Longitudinal studies with larger sample-sizes are recommended to further examine the relationship between food insecurity and obesity

    Estimating the environmental impacts of global lithium-ion battery supply chain: A temporal, geographical, and technological perspective

    A sustainable low-carbon transition via electric vehicles will require a comprehensive understanding of lithium-ion batteries’ global supply chain environmental impacts. Here, we analyze the cradle-to-gate energy use and greenhouse gas emissions of current and future nickel-manganese-cobalt and lithium-iron-phosphate battery technologies. We consider existing battery supply chains and future electricity grid decarbonization prospects for countries involved in material mining and battery production. Currently, around two-thirds of the total global emissions associated with battery production are highly concentrated in three countries as follows: China (45%), Indonesia (13%), and Australia (9%). On a unit basis, projected electricity grid decarbonization could reduce emissions of future battery production by up to 38% by 2050. An aggressive electric vehicle uptake scenario could result in cumulative emissions of 8.1 GtCO2eq by 2050 due to the manufacturing of nickel-based chemistries. However, a switch to lithium iron phosphate-based chemistry could enable emission savings of about 1.5 GtCO2eq. Secondary materials, via recycling, can help reduce primary supply requirements and alleviate the environmental burdens associated with the extraction and processing of materials from primary sources, where direct recycling offers the lowest impacts, followed by hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 61, 51, and 17%, respectively. This study can inform global and regional clean energy strategies to boost technology innovations, decarbonize the electricity grid, and optimize the global supply chain toward a net-zero future

    Novel Coronin7 interactions with Cdc42 and N-WASP regulate actin organization and Golgi morphology

    YesThe contribution of the actin cytoskeleton to the unique architecture of the Golgi complex is manifold. An important player in this process is Coronin7 (CRN7), a Golgi-resident protein that stabilizes F-actin assembly at the trans-Golgi network (TGN) thereby facilitating anterograde trafficking. Here, we establish that CRN7-mediated association of F-actin with the Golgi apparatus is distinctly modulated via the small Rho GTPase Cdc42 and N-WASP. We identify N-WASP as a novel interaction partner of CRN7 and demonstrate that CRN7 restricts spurious F-actin reorganizations by repressing N-WASP ‘hyperactivity’ upon constitutive Cdc42 activation. Loss of CRN7 leads to increased cellular F-actin content and causes a concomitant disruption of the Golgi structure. CRN7 harbours a Cdc42- and Rac-interactive binding (CRIB) motif in its tandem β-propellers and binds selectively to GDP-bound Cdc42N17 mutant. We speculate that CRN7 can act as a cofactor for active Cdc42 generation. Mutation of CRIB motif residues that abrogate Cdc42 binding to CRN7 also fail to rescue the cellular defects in fibroblasts derived from CRN7 KO mice. Cdc42N17 overexpression partially rescued the KO phenotypes whereas N-WASP overexpression failed to do so. We conclude that CRN7 spatiotemporally influences F-actin organization and Golgi integrity in a Cdc42- and N-WASP-dependent manner.This work was supported by SFB 670 and DFG NO 113/22.
