    High precision real-time location estimates in a real-life barn environment using a commercial ultra wideband chip

    Structural changes lead to an increase in the number of dairy cows and dry sows kept per group. This has consequences in how easily a farmer can supervise his herd and may be detrimental to animal welfare, specifically regarding social relations, time budget and area of residence. An automated tracking system can support the farmer in his management activities and can provide the foundation for a scientific assessment of the welfare consequences of large groups. In this study, a relatively simple and inexpensive real time location system (RTLS) was developed with the aim of achieving precise localization of several tags (animals) in real time and in a real barn environment. The RTLS was based on the ultra-wideband (UWB) technology provided by DecaWave and was adapted for a time difference of arrival (TDoA) procedure to estimate the tags’ positions. The RTLS can handle up to a hundred tags simultaneously using a Pure ALOHA random access method at 1-second intervals. The localization of the tags was estimated in 2D on a given fixed height using a constrained Gauss-Newton algorithm to increase accuracy and stability. The performance of the overall system was evaluated in two different dairy barns. To determine the precision of the system, static and dynamic positions measured at withers height of a cow (1.5 m) and closer to the ground mimicking a lying cow were compared with a reference system (theodolite). The 2D deviations between the systems were used as a measure of precision. In addition, the scalability in respect to the number of tags and the size of the observed area was examined in situations with ten tags and the situation with 100 tags was simulated with a ten-fold increase in sampling rate. According to the field test, the system as developed can be used for the individual localization of animals. At withers height, most of the measured locations deviated less than 0.5 m from the localizations as measured by the theodolite. At lower heights, and closer to the corners of the observed area, some localization estimates were somewhat larger. This was also the case close to large metal barn infrastructure. The measured collision rate of 11% for 100 tags was low. In spite of its low price, the system as a whole is therefore promising and ready for a next step, which should include the observation of large groups of real animals on working farms

    We show that both talent and popularity significantly contribute to stars' market values in German soccer. The talent-versus-popularity controversy on the sources of stardom goes back to Rosen (1981) and Adler (1985). All attempts to resolve the controversy empirically face the difficulty of accurately identifying talent. In professional sports, rank-order tournaments help in ascertaining talent. Analyzing a team setting, we use 20 different performance indicators to estimate a player's talent according to his ability to increase the team's winning probability

    The role of patriotism in explaining the TV audience of national team games - Evidence from four international tournaments

    In the literature addressing the determinants of TV audiences in sports, both the absolute and relative playing strength of the opponents play a prominent role. Regarding national team competitions, however, this study conjectures that patriotism matters as well. Analyzing the Swiss TV audience at 2 World Cups and 2 European Football Championships, this study finds strong evidence that TV ratings are highly affected by the sizes of the groups of foreign residents affiliated with the teams playing on the field

    CEO-CIO Shared Understanding of the Role of Technology: Outcomes for Technological Innovation Value

    In this paper, we propose that contextual “language style matching” between CEO and CIO - a form of similarity in verbal style based on the unconscious use of function words - can provide insight into the quality of collaboration between CEO and CIO. Following upper echelon and managerial cognition research, we argue that high levels of language style matching between the CEO and CIO when discussing the role of technology for the business reflects a shared understanding of the role of technology. As CEO-CIO shared understanding aligns technology innovation with overall business strategy, the economic value of the firm’s technological innovations increases. Counterintuitively, we expect the relationship to weaken when CEOs are overly optimistic, as CEOs are less likely to question technological innovation from a business standpoint. Thus, the shared understanding of the CEO and CIO is misguided. Using panel data, we find empirical support for these predictions

    Mid-term functional outcome of a total arthroplasty of the first metatarsophalangeal joint

    Arthroplasty of the first metatarsophalangeal joint is an alternative treatment option for end-stage hallux rigidus to the current gold standard of arthrodesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the mid-term functional outcome of an anatomically shaped prosthesis for the first metatarsophalangeal joint using pedobarography.; Ten patients (12 affected feet; age at surgery: 62.1 (SD: 7.2) years) were investigated preoperatively and 52 (SD: 3) months postoperatively using pedobarography (EMED, novel GmbH, Munich, Germany). Two patients were excluded at follow-up because their prosthesis was converted to an arthrodesis. Peak force and plantar pressure under the five metatarsal heads and the hallux were analyzed and correlated with the clinical outcome (pain, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society forefoot score and radiographic maximum first metatarsophalangeal dorsiflexion). Differences between pre- and postoperative data were analyzed using paired t-tests (alpha=0.05).; Postoperatively, forefoot peak forces under the fourth (+40.9%; P=0.018) and fifth metatarsal (+54.9%; P=0.037) and plantar pressures under the fifth metatarsal (+38.7%; P=0.027) increased significantly, while peak plantar pressures and forces under the hindfoot, medial forefoot and hallux did not change. While maximum passive dorsiflexion was not significantly greater at the 4-year follow-up compared to preoperatively, overall greater passive dorsiflexion was associated with higher first metatarsal peak pressure.; Despite of patients reporting less pain, the functional results indicate an altered and potentially non-physiological postoperative gait pattern with a lateralization of the load during walking, especially in patients with limited passive dorsiflexion

    Routes for efficiency enhancement in fluorescent TADF exciplex host OLEDs gained from an electro‐optical device model

    Fluorescence-based organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) have increasingly attracted attention in research and industry. One method to implement TADF is based on an emitter layer composed of an exciplex host and a fluorescent dopant. Even though the experimental realization of this concept has demonstrated promising external quantum efficiencies, the full potential of this approach has not yet been assessed. To this end, a comprehensive electro-optical device model accounting for the full exciton dynamics including triplet harvesting and exciton quenching is presented. The model parameters are fitted to multiple output characteristics of an OLED comprising a TADF exciplex host with a fluorescent emitter, showing an external quantum efficiency of >10%. With the model at hand, an emission zone analysis and a parameter study are performed, and possible routes for further efficiency enhancement are presented
