Objectives. There is a classical distinction based on clinical criteria between acquired and congenital cholesteatomas. To determine if these two types of lesions show different immunohistochemical features, we have studied the expression patterns of three distinctive galectins (animal lectins implied especially in cellular proliferation and apoptosis) in both types of cholesteatomas and compared it to their expression patterns in external auditory canal skin. Methods. Our study is based on nine acquired and eight congenital cholesteatomas, obtained from children during ear surgery. Six specimens of normal adult auditory meatal skin served as control. Specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using monoclonal antibodies with galectin-1 and galectin-3, and a polyclonal antibody with galectin-7. Results. We did not observe any differences in the galectin distribution pattern between congenital and acquired pediatric cholesteatomas. Compared to the control group, cholesteatomas present some particular features. There was no expression of galectin-1 and a lower expression of galectin-3 in the epithelium. Furthermore, we observed a preferentially nuclear distribution of galectin-7 in cholesteatomas, whereas it is essentially cytoplasmic in the control group. Conclusion. The data reported in this study suggest, on the basis of a lesser marked galectin-3 in cholesteatomas epithelium compared with an external auditory canal skin, that an immature keratinocytes population is at the origin of these lesions and that galectin-3 and galectin-7 play a part in the capacity as apoptosis modulators. Our study does not establish a difference in the galectin expressions of congenital and acquired cholesteatomas, but it constitutes however an additional argument in favor of the "undifferentiated" origin of keratinocytes in cholesteatomas. © 2012 by Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Ecofriendly recycled aggregate concrete and bioreceptivity

Nowadays, it becomes essential to limit environmental impact of building materials and to consider the life cycle of materials used. Recycling of materials from demolition has the dual objective of preserving natural resources and limiting the number of storage sites. The study presented here aims to develop the use of recycled aggregate issued of concrete in total replacement of natural materials (sand and gravel). This work has to be done upstream the studies on bio-corrosion or bio-receptivity of these concrete composed of recycled aggregates. Following an experimental analysis of physical, mechanical and mineralogical properties of recycled aggregates, the influence of these characteristics on choosing formulation parameters of concrete and mortar was studied. It was shown that the use of superplasticizers is necessary to reach satisfactory properties of concrete. The next step of this work will be toanalyse the bio-receptivity of these concrete and compatibilitywith bio-admixture used to decrease bio-receptivity and bio-corrosion; and to develop bio-superplasticizers to replace chemical ones

These last years numerous advances were realized in the treatment of the non small cell lung carcinoma by the discovery of biomarkers sensitive to targeted therapies. The highlighting of these biomarkers considerably modified the care of the samples by the pathologists. The latter also have to get acquainted with these new techniques in their laboratories. At the moment, only the highlighting of mutations of the EGFR and the translocation of ALK are integrated into the routine of the patient with advanced or metastatic NSCLC. But it is certain that in the future other biomarkers will be to test.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Techniques et stratégie de prise en charge des prélèvements anatomopathologiques dans le cadre de l'approche diagnostique et thérapeutique du cancer bronchique

Histopathology is key to the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. This analysis requires tissue sampling from primary and/or metastatic lesions. The choice of sampling technique is intended to optimize diagnostic yield while avoiding unnecessarily invasive procedures. Recent developments in targeted therapy require increasingly precise histological and molecular characterization of the tumor. Therefore, pathologists must be economical with tissue samples to ensure that they have the opportunity to perform all the analyses required. More than ever, good communication between clinician, endoscopist or surgeon, and pathologist is essential. This is necessary to ensure that all participants in the process of lung cancer diagnosis collaborate to ensure that the appropriate number and type of biopsies are performed with the appropriate tissue sampling treatment. This will allow performance of all the necessary analyses leading to a more precise characterization of the tumor, and thus the optimal treatment for patients with lung cancer.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors for second line therapy of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Targeted therapies are nowadays a treatment option in metastatic non-small cell lung cancer, for which oncogenic drivers have been identified. The epidermal growth factor-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors gefitinib and erlotinib, are the standard of care for patients in whom tumors are presenting with an activating epidermal growth factor-receptor mutation, with new active agents like afatinib reaching clinics in the near future. Other genetic abnormalities have been documented in squamous and non-squamous lung cancer. The EML4–ALK gene fusion is a rare event, occurring in around 5% of lung cancer, quite exclusively in adenocarcinoma with a predominance of young non/light smokers. Detection of ALK-positive tumors is challenging, as there is no gold-standard technique. Fluorescence in situ hybridization is the method used in prospective trials assessing the activity of crizotinib and is recommended by the American FDA. Crizotinib is the first orally active inhibitor of receptor tyrosine kinases, including ALK and ROS1, in clinical practice. Impressive results came from a phase I study and are now confirmed in a large phase II study with response rate of 60%, whatever the number of previous lines of chemotherapy. Other ALK inhibitors are currently in the preclinical phase, and some are showing promising results in early phase I/II studies. This review aims to present the current knowledge on the EML4–ALK gene fusion, the pitfalls for the pathologist and the clinician in searching this abnormality, and to review the existing literature on ALK inhibitors under development, focusing their role compared to chemotherapy in non-small cell lung cancer patients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Co-existent gout and septic arthritis at the wrist: a case report.

    No full text
This article presents an exceptional clinical manifestation of gout in the wrist. The patient suffered from an association of septic and urate-crystal-induced arthritis. At the time, the serum uric acid concentration was still normal. The association of septic and urate-crystal-induced arthritis has been reported in other locations. The pathophysiology of the precipitation of urate crystals in the presence of an infectious process is discussed.Case ReportsJournal Articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
