    Water Quality Assessment Along Lower Hlaing River

    In this study, water quality of Hlaing River was monitored along the downstream reach during low flow periods and water samples were collected once a week during January and February. Stations for sample collection were fixed after site survey. There are altogether 14 stations to analyse water quality of the study river reach. The monitoring program includes collection of samples from seven locations along the river into which seven streams discharge. These samples were analysed for a number of water quality parameters such as temperature, total dissolve solid,  total suspended solid, Conductivity, Salinity, pH, BOD, COD and Arsenic. The results of water quality parameters showed significant variation in water quality of the river and the water quality monitoring data were compared to the water quality standards for different uses. It is found that water quality of Hlaing River deteriorates and doesn’t meet the requirements for conserving of living environment due to the pollution from the tributary streams which received wastewater from adjacent industrial zones and newly Satellite town

    Study on Rust Characterization and Prediction of Atmospheric Corrosion Rates for Structural Steels in Yangon (Myanmar)

    According to Fontana, “Corrosion is defined as the deterioration of a material because of reaction with its environment”. The present study is performed to get the behaviour of rust characterization and to predict long term atmospheric corrosion rates of structural steels in Yangon, Myanmar. Three types of structural steel (Type A, Type B and Type C) samples which are commonly used in Myanmar are exposed outdoors according to BS EN ISO 8565. They are removed one month periods, and their mass losses are determined according to ISO 8407 in Yangon Technological University. At the same time, environmental parameters of the test site are monitored. Rust characterization of structural steels is determined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) results in University Research Centre (Yangon University, Myanmar). From SEM results, Type A and Type B steels have nearly the same image controlled by β-FeOOH which can increase long term corrosion, whereas Type C steel has controlled by γ-FeOOH. A prediction model is developed using SPSS software to understand the main factors which cause the atmospheric corrosion, and it is found that the atmospheric corrosion in Yangon depends mainly on the time of wetness (TO

    Historical Morphodynamics Assessment in Bridge Areas using Remote Sensing and GIS Techniques

    Currently the Ministry of Construction is responsible for planning and construction of bridges across the country but remote sensing and satellite data are not widely used in the Ministry’s routine process. Although the inspection and monitoring are carried out by the conventional methods, the remote sensing and GIS techniques are available as an alternative way with time and cost saving. From this study, the channel migration in the locations of Ayeyarwady bridges will be analyzed and mapped by identifying temporal changes of channels. Google Earth Engine is used as the primary application in this study and surface water extraction from historical Landsat satellite imagery is done by GEE. River centerline processing and erosion-deposition area identifications are carried out by GIS technique. Study period of each bridge is between 1987 and 2017. Bo Myat Tun Bridge and Ayeyarwady Bridge (Pakokku) are toped in the list with highest migration and erosion-deposition rate according to the study.     Age Related Changes in Hematological Values of Myanmar Local Puppies

    The hematological parameters were used to monitor the health status and its components also changed according to the ages. However, there were no reports for this issues in Myanmar local dogs. Thus, this study was carried out to investigate the age-related changes on the hematological parameters of local puppies in Myanmar. Ten local puppies with the age of 2-3 month old were used in this experiment, which was lasted for 8 weeks.The daily clinical examinations were conducted throughout the entire experimental period for general health check-up. Haematological parameters (Total WBC count and its differential counts, and RBC, HCT, MCV, HGB, MCH, MCHC and platelets) were measured bi-weekly with Abacus Vet-5 automate haematology analyser. According to the results, the total WBC and eosinophil counts were not significantly different (P>0.05), while lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils and basophils were significantly different (P<0.05) with the aging of experimental animals. The values of RBC, HGB, HCT, MCV, MCH, MCHC and platelets were not significantly different (P>0.05) throughout the experimental periods. Thus, the age-related changes were observed on cell counts of lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, basophils in Myanmar local puppies

    Hospital-based Diagnosis of Hemorrhagic Fever, Encephalitis, and Hepatitis in Cambodian Children

    Surveillance was conducted for three clinical syndromes (hemorrhagic fever, encephalitis, and hepatitis) in Cambodian children admitted to the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh from July 1996 through September 1998. Acute- and convalescent-phase sera, and cerebrospinal fluid, when applicable, underwent diagnostic evaluation for infections with Dengue virus (DENV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and Hepatitis A, B, C, and E viruses. Of 621 children admitted with hemorrhagic fever, 499 (80%) were confirmed to have either primary or secondary DENV infection. DENV rates were as high as 10.6/100 hospital admissions in September 1998. Of 50 children with clinical encephalitis, 9 (18%) had serologic evidence of JEV infection. Forty-four children had clinical hepatitis, most (55%) due to Hepatitis A virus (HAV). One patient had Hepatitis B virus, and no patients had hepatitis C or E.     Enhanced melioidosis surveillance in patients attending four tertiary hospitals in Yangon, Myanmar.

    Abstract To investigate the current epidemiology of melioidosis in Yangon, Myanmar, between June 2017 and May 2019 we conducted enhanced surveillance for melioidosis in four tertiary hospitals in Yangon, where the disease was first discovered in 1911. Oxidase-positive Gram-negative rods were obtained from the microbiology laboratories and further analysed at the Department of Medical Research. Analysis included culture on Ashdown agar, the three disc sensitivity test (gentamicin, colistin and co-amoxiclav), latex agglutination, API 20 NE, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and a subset underwent molecular confirmation with a Burkholderia pseudomallei specific assay. Twenty one of 364 isolates (5.7%) were confirmed as B. pseudomallei and were mostly susceptible to the antibiotics used in standard therapy for melioidosis. Ten patients were from Yangon Region, nine were from Ayeyarwaddy region, and one each was from Kayin and Rakhine States. A history of soil contact was given by seven patients, five had diabetes mellitus and one had renal insufficiency. The patients presented with septicaemia (12 cases), pneumonia (three cases), urinary tract infection (two cases) and wound infection (four cases). Eighteen patients survived to hospital discharge. This study highlights the likelihood that melioidosis may be far more common, but underdiagnosed, in more rural parts of Myanmar as in other countries in SE Asia.</jats:p

    Surface reconstruction is needed for almost allmodeling and visualization applications, butunfortunately 3D data from a passive vision systemare often insufficient for a traditional surfacereconstruction technique from 2D images. In thispaper, we develop a method for surfacereconstruction from 3D data set. This gives a morerobust approach than existing methods using onlypure 2D information. Our method associates 3DDelaunay triangulation data structure with thegeometric convection algorithm. Moreover, we alsouse the 3D Voronoi Diagram for reconstructing thesurface. Given a good program for this fundamentalsubroutine, the algorithm is quite easy to simple.Our method may also be used to simplify shapes byremoving small features which would require anexcessive number of elements to preserve them inthe output mesh.
