    Time-Dependent Spintronic Transport and Current-Induced Spin Transfer Torque in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

    The responses of the electrical current and the current-induced spin transfer torque (CISTT) to an ac bias in addition to a dc bias in a magnetic tunnel junction are investigated by means of the time-dependent nonquilibrium Green function technique. The time-averaged current (time-averaged CISTT) is formulated in the form of a summation of dc current (dc CISTT) multiplied by products of Bessel functions with the energy levels shifted by mℏω0m\hbar \omega _{0}. The tunneling current can be viewed as to happen between the photonic sidebands of the two ferromagnets. The electrons can pass through the barrier easily under high frequencies but difficultly under low frequencies. The tunnel magnetoresistance almost does not vary with an ac field. It is found that the spin transfer torque, still being proportional to the electrical current under an ac bias, can be changed by varying frequency. Low frequencies could yield a rapid decrease of the spin transfer torque, while a large ac signal leads to both decrease of the electrical current and the spin torque. If only an ac bias is present, the spin transfer torque is sharply enhanced at the particular amplitude and frequency of the ac bias.     An exploration of concepts of community through a case study of UK university web production

    The paper explores the inter-relation and differences between the concepts of occupational community, community of practice, online community and social network. It uses as a case study illustration the domain of UK university web site production and specifically a listserv for those involved in it. Different latent occupational communities are explored, and the potential for the listserv to help realize these as an active sense of community is considered. The listserv is not (for most participants) a tight knit community of practice, indeed it fails many criteria for an online community. It is perhaps best conceived as a loose knit network of practice, valued for information, implicit support and for the maintenance of weak ties.     Spin diffusion at finite electric and magnetic fields

    Spin transport properties at finite electric and magnetic fields are studied by using the generalized semiclassical Boltzmann equation. It is found that the spin diffusion equation for non-equilibrium spin density and spin currents involves a number of length scales that explicitly depend on the electric and magnetic fields. The set of macroscopic equations can be used to address a broad range of the spin transport problems in magnetic multilayers as well as in semiconductor heterostructure. A specific example of spin injection into semiconductors at arbitrary electric and magnetic fields is illustrated

    Surface Kinetics and Generation of Different Terms in a Conservative Growth Equation

    A method based on the kinetics of adatoms on a growing surface under epitaxial growth at low temperature in (1+1) dimensions is proposed to obtain a closed form of local growth equation. It can be generalized to any growth problem as long as diffusion of adatoms govern the surface morphology. The method can be easily extended to higher dimensions. The kinetic processes contributing to various terms in the growth equation (GE) are identified from the analysis of in-plane and downward hops. In particular, processes corresponding to the (h -> -h) symmetry breaking term and curvature dependent term are discussed. Consequence of these terms on the stable and unstable transition in (1+1) dimensions is analyzed. In (2+1) dimensions it is shown that an additional (h -> -h) symmetry breaking term is generated due to the in-plane curvature associated with the mound like structures. This term is independent of any diffusion barrier differences between in-plane and out of-plane migration. It is argued that terms generated in the presence of downward hops are the relevant terms in a GE. Growth equation in the closed form is obtained for various growth models introduced to capture most of the processes in experimental Molecular Beam Epitaxial growth. Effect of dissociation is also considered and is seen to have stabilizing effect on the growth. It is shown that for uphill current the GE approach fails to describe the growth since a given GE is not valid over the entire substrate.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure

    Heavy quark medium polarization at next-to-leading order

    We compute the imaginary part of the heavy quark contribution to the photon polarization tensor, i.e. the quarkonium spectral function in the vector channel, at next-to-leading order in thermal QCD. Matching our result, which is valid sufficiently far away from the two-quark threshold, with a previously determined resummed expression, which is valid close to the threshold, we obtain a phenomenological estimate for the spectral function valid for all non-zero energies. In particular, the new expression allows to fix the overall normalization of the previous resummed one. Our result may be helpful for lattice reconstructions of the spectral function (near the continuum limit), which necessitate its high energy behaviour as input, and can in principle also be compared with the dilepton production rate measured in heavy ion collision experiments.     Recent theories of spin-current-induced magnetization reversal are formulated in terms of a spin-mixing conductance GmixG^{mix}. We evaluate GmixG^{mix} from first-principles for a number of (dis)ordered interfaces between magnetic and non-magnetic materials.     Surface Terms as Counterterms in the AdS/CFT Correspondence

    We examine the recently proposed technique of adding boundary counterterms to the gravitational action for spacetimes which are locally asymptotic to anti-de Sitter. In particular, we explicitly identify higher order counterterms, which allow us to consider spacetimes of dimensions d<=7. As the counterterms eliminate the need of ``background subtraction'' in calculating the action, we apply this technique to study examples where the appropriate background was ambiguous or unknown: topological black holes, Taub-NUT-AdS and Taub-Bolt-AdS. We also identify certain cases where the covariant counterterms fail to render the action finite, and we comment on the dual field theory interpretation of this result. In some examples, the case of vanishing cosmological constant may be recovered in a limit, which allows us to check results and resolve ambiguities in certain asymptotically flat spacetime computations in the literature.Comment: Revtex, 18 pages.     Nonanticommutative Deformation of N=4 SYM Theory: The Myers Effect and Vacuum States

    We propose a deformation of N=4{\cal N}=4 SYM theoery induced by nonanticommutative star product. The deformation introduces new bosonic terms which we identify with the corresponding Myers terms of a stack of D3-branes in the presence of a five-form RR flux. We take this as an indication that the deformed lagrangian describes D3-branes in such a background. The vacuum states of the theory are also examined. In a specific case where the U(1) part of the gauge field is nonvanishing the (anti)holomorphic transverse coordinates of the brane sit on a fuzzy two sphere. For a supersymmetric vacuum the antiholomorphic coordinates must necessarily commute.
