Black holes in Godel universes and pp-waves
We find exact rotating and non-rotating neutral black hole solutions in the
Godel universe of the five dimensional minimal supergravity theory. We also
describe the embedding of this solution in M-theory. After dimensional
reduction and T-duality, we obtain a supergravity solution corresponding to
placing a black string in a pp-wave background.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figur
Three-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamics Simulations Of Counter-Helicity Spheromak Merging In The Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment
Recent counter-helicity spheromak merging experiments in the Swarthmore Spheromak Experiment (SSX) have produced a novel compact torus (CT) with unusual features. These include a persistent antisymmetric toroidal magnetic field profile and a slow, nonlinear emergence of the n = 1 tilt mode. Experimental measurements are inconclusive as to whether this unique CT is a fully merged field-reversed configuration (FRC) with strong toroidal field or a partially merged doublet CT configuration with both spheromak- and FRC-like characteristics. In this paper, the SSX merging process is studied in detail using three-dimensional resistive MHD simulations from the Hybrid Magnetohydrodynamics (HYM) code. These simulations show that merging plasmas in the SSX parameter regime only partially reconnect, leaving behind a doublet CT rather than an FRC. Through direct comparisons, we show that the magnetic structure in the simulations is highly consistent with the SSX experimental observations. We also find that the n = 1 tilt mode begins as a fast growing linear mode that evolves into a slower-growing nonlinear mode before being detected experimentally. A simulation parameter scan over resistivity, viscosity, and line-tying shows that these parameters can strongly affect the behavior of both the merging process and the tilt mode. In fact, merging in certain parameter regimes is found to produce a toroidal-field-free FRC rather than a doublet CT. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3660533
Quantum phase transition in a Dp-Dq system
Using the top-down approach, we study intersecting Dp-Dq brane configuration
in string theory and find examples, where there can be a quantum phase
transition at zero temperature induced by the violation of the
Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound at IR, which is done essentially by a
combination of charge density and magnetic fields. In particular, there exists
a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type of transition for D3-D5 and D5-D5
systems. The study of the BKT type of transition is initiated by Jensen et al.
[Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 041601 (2010) ] for a D3-D5 system with nonzero
charge density and a magnetic field. Here, we show that one can have the BKT
transition for a D3-D5 system even in the absence of charge density but
requires multiple magnetic fields. In this case the field theory lives in 2+1
dimensions, whereas for the D5-D5 type, the transition requires the presence of
both the charge density and magnetic fields and the dual field theory lives on
a 3+1 dimensional spacetime. We also study the D3-D7 system but it does not
show the BKT type of transition.Comment: 1+37 pages; v2 Chern-Simon term for D3-D5 case presented, typos fixed

QED calculation of the n=1 and n=2 energy levels in He-like ions
We perform ab initio QED calculations of energy levels for the and
states of He-like ions with the nuclear charge in the range -100.
The complete set of two-electron QED corrections is evaluated to all orders in
the parameter \aZ. Uncalculated contributions to energy levels come through
orders \alpha^3 (\aZ)^2, \alpha^2 (\aZ)^7, and higher. The calculation
presented is the first treatment for excited states of He-like ions complete
through order \alpha^2 (\aZ)^4. A significant improvement in accuracy of
theoretical predictions is achieved, especially in the high- region.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure
Non-Markovian large amplitude motion and nuclear fission
The general problem of dissipation in macroscopic large-amplitude collective
motion and its relation to energy diffusion of intrinsic degrees of freedom of
a nucleus is studied. By applying the cranking approach to the nuclear many
body system, a set of coupled dynamical equations for the collective classical
variables and the quantum mechanical occupancies of the intrinsic nuclear
states is derived. Different dynamical regimes of the intrinsic nuclear motion
and its consequences on time properties of collective dissipation are
discussed. The approach is applied to the descant of the nucleus from the
fission barrier.Comment: 9 pages and 3 figure
Effects of long-term organophosphate exposures on neurological symptoms, vibration sense and tremor amongst South African farm workers
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the relationship between long-term exposure to organophosphate insecticides and neurological symptoms, vibration sense, and motor tremor after control for the effect of past poisoning and acute exposure. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 164 pesticide applicators and 83 nonspraying reference workers on deciduous fruit farms. The workers were tested on the Vibratron II, on tests of dynamic and static tremor, and for a set of neurological and "dummy" symptoms. Exposure was derived with the use of a job-exposure matrix for pesticides in agriculture. RESULTS: Compared with nonapplicators, current applicators reported significantly more dizziness, sleepiness, and headache and had a higher overall neurological symptom score. This association remained statistically significant after multiple logistic regression analyses controlling for a range of confounders and effect modifiers [odds ratio (OR) 2.25, for current applicators having high neurological score, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.15-4.39]. The average lifetime intensity of organophosphate exposure was nonsignificantly associated with both neurological (OR 1.98, 95% CI 0.49-7.94) and "dummy" symptoms (OR 2.37, 95% CI 0.54-10.35). Previous pesticide poisoning was significantly associated with the neurological scores (OR 4.08, 95% CI 1.48-11.22) but not with the "dummy" symptoms. Vibration sense outcomes were associated with age and height, but not with the organophosphate exposure measures. In the multiple linear regression modeling for tremor intensity in the dominant hand, recent organophosphate exposure in the past 10 days was a significant predictor (partial correlation coefficient = 0.04), but none of the long-term organophosphate exposure measures were significant. CONCLUSIONS: Strong evidence was found for an association between symptom outcomes and past organophosphate poisoning and between symptom outcomes and current spray activity. In contrast to symptoms, there was no association between either past poisoning or current spray activity and vibration sense or tremor outcome. Long-term organophosphate exposure did not appear to predict symptoms, vibration sense, or tremor outcome
Chaoticity and Shell Effects in the Nearest-Neighbor Distributions
Statistics of the single-particle levels in a deformed Woods-Saxon potential
is analyzed in terms of the Poisson and Wigner nearest-neighbor distributions
for several deformations and multipolarities of its surface distortions. We
found the significant differences of all the distributions with a fixed value
of the angular momentum projection of the particle, more closely to the Wigner
distribution, in contrast to the full spectra with Poisson-like behavior.
Important shell effects are observed in the nearest neighbor spacing
distributions, the larger the smaller deformations of the surface
multipolarities.Comment: 10 pages and 9 figure

The Ecological and Ethical Consumption Development Prospects in Poland Compared with the Western European Countries
An overview of the Western European literature shows that one of the most distinct trends in consumption that has been noted in the recent years is globally increasing environmental and social awareness. The issue of consumers' behaviours and attitudes towards "socially responsible products" has been gaining importance in Polish economy as well. This article evaluates the development prospects of ethical and ecological consumption in Poland vis-à-vis Western European countries. The comparative analysis being part of the article utilizes primary sources of information, i.e. interviews with a representative sample of Polish adults, as well as secondary sources of information. A factor analysis or, more precisely, a principal component analysis, allowed dividing Polish consumers into groups that were typologically homogeneous in respect of their sensitivity to various aspects of business ethics and ecology.
Remote sensing applications to resource problems in South Dakota
The author has identified the following significant results. Change in the vegetative structure was taking place in the Black Hills. Temporal analysis of the areal extent of open meadows was accomplished using black and white and color infrared aerial photography. A reduction of nearly 1100 hectares of open meadows was determined using photointerpretation. Techniques were developed for the management of meandering lakes, including use of LANDSAT imagery for continuous monitoring, classification of hydrophytes on low altitude CIR imagery, and planning and evaluation of improvements and multiple uses on aerial photography and photo mosaics. LANDSAT data were analyzed statistically from small and entire study scene areas to determine the effect of soils stratifications of corn signatures. Band 5 early season and band 7 later season recorded the strongest evidence of the influence of soils on corn signatures. Significant strata were determined by a multiple range test
