    This invention relates to an end effector device for grasping and maneuvering objects such as berthing handles of a space telescope. The device includes a V-shaped capture window defined as inclined surfaces in parallel face plates which converge toward a retainer recess in which the handle is retained. A pivotal finger (30) meshes with a pair of pivoted fingers which rotate in counterrotation. The fingers rotate to pull a handle within the capture window into recess where latches lock handle in the recess. To align the capture window, plates may be cocked plus or minus five degrees on base. Drive means is included in the form of a motor coupled with a harmonic drive speed reducer, which provides for slow movement of the fingers at a high torque so that large articles may be handled. Novelty of the invention is believed to reside in the combined intermeshing finger structure, drive means and the harmonic drive speed reducer, which features provide the required maneuverability and strength

    Seasonal changes in Sanderling (Calidris alba) feeding success, time budgets, and weights were followed throughout the nonbreeding season at Bodega Bay, California. Sanderlings spent more time roosting in fall than in winter, and in fall adults spent more time roosting than juveniles. Sanderling prey capture rates were high in fall and spring and declined through winter. Sanderling weights paralleled seasonal changes in feeding success and activity patterns: birds were heaviest in fall and spring and lightest in winter. These results reflect lowered food availability in winter and imply that birds may have difficulty balancing their energy budgets during part of the nonbreeding season

    An Investigation Of The Recent Deterioration Of I-75 In Scott County

    In early January of 1999, approximately 15 miles ofl-75 in Scott County began to rapidly deteriorate. The existing pavement exhibited several potholes and delaminations. The worst section of deterioration fell approximately between milepoints 125 and 133. In the latter part of January, the condition of the highway had declined to the point thatcorrective action was necessary. The worst sections were milled and patched with hotmixasphalt (HMA). Despite this temporary improvement to the pavement condition, adesire developed within the Department to investigate the cause of the deterioration inorder to prevent a future similar occurrence. Therefore, personnel from the Division of Materials and the Kentucky Transportation Center conducted an abbreviated investigation of the deteriorating pavement and theasphalt mixtures involved. The findings from this investigation, including analyses of thehistorical data for these mixtures and testing of the in-place pavement, revealed severalpossibilities for the premature pavement failure. These possibilities included questionable quality of the aggregates in the mixtures, lowasphalt contents and high dust contents, poor volumetric properties of the mixtures, andlow in-place densities and high permeability of the existing pavement. It was concludedthat no single deficiency caused the failure, but rather, a combination of several factors. A companion section of I-7 5 immediately south of the deteriorated Scott County portions,constructed about one year prior to the pavement presently in question, continues toperform well. Investigation of this pavement and the involved asphalt mixtures revealedhigher asphalt contents, better volumetric properties, higher in-place densities, and lowerpermeability. It is believed that recent revisions to the applicable asphalt mixture specifications have allbut eliminated the possibility of the recurrence of this type of failure. Mixtures designedcurrently under the Superpave system undergo greater scrutiny and must satisfy tougherspecifications. Also, asphalt mixtures are accepted differently today than when thispavement was originally constructed. It is highly unlikely that the mixtures that arecurrently deteriorating on I-75 could satisfy today\u27s specifications

    Simulation of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines With Variable Pitch Foils

    A dynamic computer model of a turbine was developed in MATLAB in order to study the behavior of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) with variable pitch (articulating) foils. The simulation results corroborated the findings of several empirical studies on VAWTs. The model was used to analyze theories of pitch articulation and to inform the discussion on turbine design. Simulations of various models showed that pitch articulation allowed Darrieus-style vertical axis wind turbines to start from rest. Once in motion, the rotor was found to accelerate rapidly to very high rotational velocities. The simulations revealed a plateau region of high efficiency for small-scale Darrieus-style VAWTs with symmetric airfoils at tip speed ratios in the range of 3 to 4 and demonstrated the advantages of using a dynamic generator load

    Going to Extremes: Why Do Sanderlings Migrate to the Neotropics?

    Sanderlings (Calidris alba) breed within a small latitudinal range in the arctic while spreading in winter virtually throughout temperate and tropical marine beaches of the world. This paper examines spatial variation in Sanderlings nonbreeding density across the New World, documents annual cycle differences between populations wintering in California and those wintering in Peru and Chile, and then explores demographic and ecological factors underlying Sanderlings migration to different wintering grounds. Densities during the nonbreeding season are higher on the Pacific coast than on the Atlantic at all censused latitudes in the New World, and reach a peak in southwestern Peru and northwestern Chile adjacent to the Humboldt Current. Populations wintering in California spend a larger fraction of the year on the wintering site than do those wintering in Peru and Chile. Adults replace primaries during prebasic molt in both regions, as do first-winter Sanderlings in Peru and Chile. First-winter birds in California do not molt primaries. Comparisons of weight and time-activity budgets near the northern and southern ends of the winter distributions along the Pacific coast of the western hemisphere indicate that resource conditions are more favorable for Sanderlings in the south
