A Study of Employment Opportunities for Myanmar Graduates of Assumption University with Special Reference to Myanmar’s Labor Market

    Get PDF
In the past, the vast majority of Assumption University’s (AU) Myanmar graduates have tried to achieve better employment and higher socio-economic positions in other countries. English proficiency is a strength for AU graduates to obtain proper jobs, not only in Myanmar but also in other countries. Significant political reforms and economic developments in Myanmar have emerged since 2010. As a result, more employment opportunities have induced more AU graduates to work in their home country. On the other hand, these graduates have encountered many challenges in Myanmar’s working environment. Nevertheless, some graduates have achieved high positions with attractive remuneration in multinational or local enterprises while some returnees are running their own businesses successfully

Mobility, Identity and Contributions of Skilled Burmese Migrant Workers: An Exploratory Study in Bangkok

The steady stream of skilled Burmese migrants flowing into Thailand started after the 1988 uprising. The first generation migrated to Thailand for better employment; and the second generation came along with their parents or came independently for better education and then became skilled workers. The majority of them have now (in the 2000s) attained at least Master’s degrees and work in teaching institutions, engineering industries, and IT (Information Technology) companies. Many well-experienced Burmese professionals have played an important role in the development of the international programs of private educational institutions in Bangkok during the 1990s. Although they have been contributing towards the Thai society and economy for more than a decade or so, they are not willing to make the effort of integration into Thai society. The largest portion of their earnings flowed into the economy of Thailand because of an inefficient banking system, economic instability, and the unpredictable political situation in Burma which led to irregular or limited remittances for investment in Burmese businesses. However, the 2010 by-election and unprecedented developments in politics and the economy in Burma have started to change the future plan of Burmese skilled migrants

Determinants of Female Labour Force Participation in Burma: An Empirical Analysis of Socio-Economic Survey Data

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to identify the major determinants of female labour force participation (LFP) in the urban area and to examine how these determinants associate with female LFP. The data from the socio-economic survey of urban women undertaken in Rangoon, Burma, during May to July 1998, are analyzed by the logistic regression model. A number of potential variables for inclusion in the logistic regression are identified on the basis of results of the chi-squared tests and also on the basis of theoretical models which explain female participation in the labour force. The results suggest that husband’s income and marital status are important factors while educational attainment does not significantly affect (less significant for unmarried women than for married women) Burmese urban women entering into the labour force

Exploring the Gaps between the New Play-Based Kindergarten Curriculum and Teachers’ Classroom Practices in Myanmar

    Get PDF
This paper aims to explore the gaps between the new play-based kindergarten curriculum introduced by Myanmar\u27s government and the classroom practices of teachers. This study investigates kindergarten teachers\u27 understanding of the new kindergarten curriculum and implementation at the classroom level by using classroom observation and video testing. The results revealed that although the teachers understood the concept and content of the new curriculum, they could not implement it in the classroom due to class size, parents\u27 academic expectations and teachers\u27 mindset. The findings suggest that the government should make sufficient investment in facilities, training for teachers and workshops for parents to implement the policy successfull

Endosseous dental implant fractures an analysis of 21 cases

    Get PDF
Implant fracture is an infrequent cause of implant failure. The present study evaluates 21 fractured implants, with an analysis of patient age and sex, the type, length and diameter of the implant, positioning in the dental arch, the type of prosthetic rehabilitation involved, the number of abutments and pontics, the presence or absence of distal extensions or cantilevers, and loading time to fracture. Implant fracture was more common in males than in females (15:4), and the mean patient age was 56.9 years. Most cases (n = 19) corresponded to implant-supported fixed prostheses - 16 with cantilevers of different lengths ? while only two fractured implants were supporting overdentures instead of fixed prostheses. The great majority of fractured implants (80.9%) were located in the molar and premolar regions, and most fractured within 3-4 years after loading. It is important to know and apply the measures required to prevent implant fracture, and to seek the best individualized solution for each case - though complete implant removal is usually the treatment of choice

Pre-storage Exogenous Application of Hydrogen Sulphide Reduces Sugar spot, Decay loss and Preserves Quality of Banana Fruit

    Get PDF
This research focuses on effect of hydrogen sulphide treatment (control, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 mM) during ambient storage on sugar spot, decay loss and postharvest quality of banana fruit. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) treated fruit were stored at ambient conditions (25±2ºC and 60–65% of relative humidity) up to 9 days. In general, H2S treatment maintained higher values of lightness, peel firmness, reduce the respiration rate and ethylene evolution rate and extended shelf life of stored fruit by delaying progression of ripening. Moreover, H2S (1.0 mM) was found significantly better over other treatments in reducing sugar spot or peel browning spot and maintaining the desirable overall postharvest traits of the fruit. The findings indicated that H2S has a great potential for pre-storage application to preserve quality, reduce sugar spot and postharvest decay loss, possibly through the delayed onset of senescence, without any adverse effects on fruit quality

Hydrochemical and Isotopic Features of the Khaung Daing Hot Spring (Inle lake, Southern Shan State, Myanmar)

    Get PDF
Abstract The Inle lake watershed develops along a right-lateral strike-slip fault running parallel to the Sangaing fault, a major continental transform fault between the India and Sunda Plates. Located on the northwestern border of the Inle lake basin, the Khaung Daing hot spring outflows at a temperature of about 70C. This contribution represents a reconnaissance study of the spring and describes its main hydrochemical and isotopic features, compared to surface and ground waters in the watershed. The water pH is slightly acidic, and, compared to the other water samples from the watershed, shows an EC in the high range (57-1284μS/cm), the lowest pH and Eh values, and is Na-HCO 3 , whereas surface and ground waters are Ca(Mg)-HCO 3 type. The hot spring isotopic composition falls close to the Yangon Meteoric Water Line, indicating that, despite its temperature, it is not strongly modified by water-rock interaction processes. Preliminary results suggest that this hydrothermal water is likely related to deep meteoric and ground water circulation within a fault zone, in a region characterized by an elevated geothermal gradient
