Teaching Inequality: A study of gender identity in EFL Textbooks

    Get PDF
A command of English is recognised as vital for immigrants to Britain. Textbooks are used widely in learning the language but they cannot be assumed to be value free. As the Prime Minister has highlighted the importance of sexual equality, this paper analyses, from the perspective of a teacher, one book produced in the UK in order to discover how gender is represented. Making reference to key papers, there is a review of which occupations are attributed to women and which to men, which gender is given first when both are mentioned, language features employed by speakers in dialogues within the book and the use of adjectives. It is found that there are some subtle differences and therefore there is likely to be an acceptance of the values represented by its learners. Some practical recommendations are made for how a teacher might deal with such issues in class

Connecting Cultural Ties with Latinx Identity: An Explorative Semester in Mexico City

This International Education Design and Delivery Capstone describes the research and design of a proposed semester-long study abroad program entitled Connecting Cultural Ties with Latinx Identity: An Explorative Semester in Mexico City. The hybrid program is designed for undergraduate students of the University of California as a heritage seeking semester in Mexico City that fulfills Latin American Studies and International Migration Studies degree requirements. Through faculty-led seminars, direct enrollment at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and cultural excursions, students will examine Latin American culture, the bicultural identity of Hispanics living in the United States, and Mexican social justice issues. Furthermore, from participating in reflections and two diversity and inclusion trainings, students will reflect on the role of prejudice, privilege, and oppression when examining identity and immigration. Additionally, the program strives to increase study abroad participation of Latinx students who have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. The term Latinx refers to anyone of Hispanic heritage and includes all genders. To inform the design the research presents the following: barriers to study abroad for Latinx students; the academic, professional, and personal benefits of study abroad; Latinxā€™ ethnic identity development in contemporary U.S. society; strategies to increase the participation of Latinx in study abroad; and the importance of heritage seeking study abroad for Latinx. Key Terms: Hispanic heritage, heritage seeking, study abroad, Latinx identity, Mexican cultur

Numerical calculation of three-point branched covers of the projective line

We exhibit a numerical method to compute three-point branched covers of the complex projective line. We develop algorithms for working explicitly with Fuchsian triangle groups and their finite index subgroups, and we use these algorithms to compute power series expansions of modular forms on these groups.Comment: 58 pages, 24 figures; referee's comments incorporate

DETERMINATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PROCESS IMPURITIES IN PAZOPANIB HYDROCHLORIDE DRUG SUBSTANCE

Objective: To develop a rapid, sensitive, accurate, precise and linear Reverse-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method and validate as per ICH guidelines for the quantitative estimation of Pazopanib Hydrochloride (PBH) drug substance along with two process impurities. Methods: The developed method uses a reverse phase Zorbax RP18 column (50 mmƃā€”4.6 mm; 5.0 ƂĀµm), a mobile phase of 0.015M Potassium dihydrogen orthophosphate buffer (pH 3.0 with orthophosphoric acid) and methanol in the proportion of 16:84 v/v. The mobile phase was set at a flow rate of 0.8 ml/min and the volume injected was 10ƎĀ¼l for every injection. The detection wavelength was set at 215 nm.Results: Newly developed method resulted in eluting the two process impurities of PBH at 2.998 and 23.548 min respectively. The detection limits (LOD) were about 0.0061 and 0.0062 mg/ml and quantitation limit (LOQ) were about 0.024 and 0.021 mg/ml. The relative standard deviation was found to be 0.78 % and 1.38 % respectively for the two process impurities of PBH. The % recovery of the PBH impurities ranged from 97.3 to 100 % and 94.0 % to 99.0 % respectively. Conclusion: Two new process impurities of PBH drug substance were determined and characterized by newly developed RP-HPLC method, and identified using LCĆ¢ā‚¬ā€œMS technique. Proposed structures of these impurities were confirmed by structural elucidation using NMR techniques. The HPLC method was validated as per ICH guidelines. The newly developed reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method was found to be accurate, simple, sensitive and selective. It was also found to exhibit excellent resolution for the two process impurities and the PBH drug substance indicating high sensitivity and selectivity of the validated method. Keywords: RPĆ¢ā‚¬HPLC, Pazopanib hydrochloride, Method development, ValidationƂ

The advancement of technology and the age of the industrial revolution 4.0 today have changed the way people learn and acquire information. The availability of internet access and the large use of computers and smartphones in a campus environment can be directed to carry out the learning reform and to obtain the course learning outcomes. Therefore, blended learning as one method of choice was adopted to be implemented to achieve the learning outcomes. The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of blended learning to improve students' English speaking ability. The participants of the study were 48 fourth-semester students, and the study was conducted for one semester in the English Business Conversation class. The research methods used were quantitative and qualitative. The use of quantitative in this research was to measure student
