Progressive peer evaluation: Important but absent in EFL speaking classes

    Get PDF
Comprehensive teaching-learning about speaking evaluation, especially peer evaluation, is conspicuous by its absence in English Foreign Language (EFL) Speaking classes at all secondary and tertiary levels in Indonesia, especially in Aceh, This comparative research study looks at the various aspects used for evaluation and especially looks at peer evaluation in EFL speaking classes in Aceh. The paper describes twenty three (23) components recommended for evaluation of speaking communications: the seen, the spoken and the script (content) components. The results showed that teachers of EFL speaking are not using and are not even taught such detailed evaluation systems. Moreover the syllabi for speaking English at upper secondary level are severely lacking as are those used in tertiary courses. Educators need to learn from the Toastmasters International systems for evaluation and for making evaluation speeches, in particular the need to prioritise praise in evaluation with only a pointer or two on how to improve the next speech. This paper includes a simplified format for peer evaluations that students can easily be taught to use and also stresses the need for praise, not punishment, for successful evaluation. Teachers of Speaking English EFL, who practice the recommendations from this paper, should get much better results from their students

The researchers were motivated by the adoption of digital communication applications and social media platforms by some Islamic scholars in Nigeria to conduct annual Tafsir of the glorious Qur’an in Ramadan 2020 in the midst of coronavirus lockdown. The paper adopted Lull’s Gratification Theory for theoretical explanation of virtual interaction between the scholars who conducted the Tafsir from an isolated places and the audience who watched or listened from their homes in adherence to safety measures to stop the spread of the disease. Methodologically, the study adopted a cross-sectional research design and purposive sampling technique to elicit secondary data from the target participants. The study found that there is usage of digital medium of communication and interaction between Islamic clerics and their followers. This explains the flexibility of Islam to embrace development, adopt and adapt it in conformity with Islamic rules and regulations. The findings also show that Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram are the most common internet based interactive platforms which Islamic scholars explored and disseminated their Tafsir virtual to the audience. The paper concludes that internet has enabled people not only to interact virtual but Tafsir and other forms of Islamic preaching can be conducted without co-presence of the preachers and the audience. The option of live streaming video on Facebook, WhatsApp and Telegram which consume a lot amount of data has enabled Muslim users to followed the Ramadan Tafsir from distant places

THE EFFECTS OF LEPTIN ADMINISTRATION ON RENAL FUNCTION IN SPONTANEOUSLY HYPERTENSIVE RATS

    Get PDF
Objective: Elevated levels of leptin may be responsible directly for progression and severity of renal disease in obesity and hypertension. It may exert its effects by promoting fibrosis through the actions of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and the Smad pathway. This study determines the effect of leptin administration on the development of renal fibrosis in nonobese spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs).Methods: Male SHRs, aged 12-14 weeks, were injected with either leptin (60 µg/kg/day) or saline (for the control group) subcutaneously daily for42 days. At the end of the experimental period, animals were euthanized and their kidneys were removed. The right kidney was harvested for the determination of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) expression of TGF-β1, Smad2, Smad3, and bone morphogenic protein 7 (BMP7). The left kidneys were stored in neutral buffered 10% formalin until they were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Prepared slides were examined under light microscopy. 30 consecutive glomeruli were examined for the cell counts based on the number of nuclei seen and the total area of glomeruli. Results: No significant difference was evident in renal function between control and leptin-treated rats. Cellularity and area of glomeruli were also not different between the two groups. mRNA expression of TGF-β1, Smad2, and BMP7 were, however, higher in leptin-treated rats. Conclusion: It appears that 6 weeks of leptin administration increases renal TGF-β1 and Smad2 levels but with little morphological changes in the kidney. Whether the elevated BMP7 expression was responsible for lack of effect of leptin on renal morphological changes remains unclear. Keywords: Leptin, Renal function, Hypertension, Glomerulus, Transforming growth factor-β1, Smad, Spontaneously hypertensive rats

The Application of the Constitutional Convention in Malaysia

    Get PDF
In Malaysia, there is no one institution that can outdo the supremacy of the Federal Constitution. Even the three government bodies that refer to the power separation doctrine which is the legislative, judiciary and executive bodies even the Yang di-Pertuan Agong are under this Federal Constitution. The constitution can be divided into two, written and non-written constitution. The written constitution is the form of constitution that is gathered and arranged in one document. The non-written counterpart encompasses all of the constitutional principles not compiled in one document such as the law endorsed by the Parliament and the verdicts of the court such as in the United Kingdom. Other than the constitution, there are certain practices that are thought to be part of the principles of the constitution. This is known as the Constitutional Convention or the customary practice of the Constitution. Constitutional convention is a non-legislative practice and it is similar to the political ethics and not enforced in court. Although it seems trivial, it is important for this practice to be complied with, otherwise it is difficult for the constitution to work successfully as the constitutional convention cannot be brought to court and forced to be obeyed. Thus, the discussion of this article rests on the constitutional convention in terms of the social contract, the appointment of the Prime Minister, the appointment of the country’s main positions and collective responsibility.
