    Loadcell supports for a dynamic force plate

    An apparatus was developed to accurately measure components of force along three mutually perpendicular axes, torque, and the center of pressure imposed by the foot of a subject walking over its surface. The data obtained were used to supplement high-speed motion picture and electromyographic (EMG) data for in-depth studies of normal or abnormal human gait. Significant features of the design (in particular, the mechanisms used to support the loadcell transducers) are described. Results of the development program and typical data obtained with the device are presented and discussed

    Assembly of a polymer lab-on-chip device for impedimetric measurements of D-dimers in whole blood

    This paper reports the development and characterisation of an assembly technology for a polymer lab-on-chip. The system consists of a 150 m deep hot embossed microfluidic channel in polycarbonate and Au electrodes fabricated separately by photolithography on polyethylenenaphthalate. The system is designed for impedimetric immunoassay detection in whole blood. Electrode layer and microfluidic substrate are joined by means of a 50 m thick double-sided medical grade adhesive tape, adjusted with an optical alignment system. The bond proved to be liquid tight at room temperature. An alignment accuracy of 34 m (+/- 19 m) evaluated over a set of 23 samples, was achieved. The effect of alignment accuracy of the intermediate adhesive film on whole blood flow properties in the device is studied. Already an alignment error of 70 m increases the flushing out time of whole blood by approximately 20 %

    Two-Functional Direct Current Sputtered Silver-Containing Titanium Dioxide Thin Films

    The article reports on structure, mechanical, optical, photocatalytic and biocidal properties of Ti–Ag–O films. The Ti–Ag–O films were reactively sputter-deposited from a composed Ti/Ag target at different partial pressures of oxygen on unheated glass substrate held on floating potentialUfl. It was found that addition of ~2 at.% of Ag into TiO2film has no negative influence on UV-induced hydrophilicity of TiO2film. Thick (~1,500 nm) TiO2/Ag films containing (200) anatase phase exhibit the best hydrophilicity with water droplet contact angle (WDCA) lower than 10° after UV irradiation for 20 min. Thick (~1,500 nm) TiO2/Ag films exhibited a better UV-induced hydrophilicity compared to that of thinner (~700 nm) TiO2/Ag films. Further it was found that hydrophilic TiO2/Ag films exhibit a strong biocidal effect under both the visible light and the UV irradiation with 100% killing efficiency ofEscherichia coliATCC 10536 after UV irradiation for 20 min. Reported results show that single layer of TiO2with Ag distributed in its whole volume exhibits, after UV irradiation, simultaneously two functions: (1) excellent hydrophilicity with WDCA < 10° and (2) strong power to killE. colieven under visible light due to direct toxicity of Ag

    The focused ion beam as an integrated circuit restructuring tool

    One of the capabilities of focused ion beam systems is ion milling. The purpose of this work is to explore this capability as a tool for integrated circuit restructuring. Methods for cutting and joining conductors are needed. Two methods for joining conductors are demonstrated. The first consists of spinning nitrocellulose (a self‐developing resist) on the circuit, ion exposing an area, say, 7×7 ÎŒm, then milling a smaller via with sloping sidewalls through the first metal layer down to the second, e‐beam evaporating metal, and then dissolving the nitrocellulose to achieve liftoff. The resistance of these links between two metal levels varied from 1 to 7 Ω. The second, simpler method consists of milling a via with vertical sidewalls down to the lower metal layer, then reducing the milling scan to a smaller area in the center of this via, thereby redepositing the metal from the lower layer on the vertical sidewall. The short circuit thus achieved varied from 0.4 to 1.5 Ω for vias of dimensions 3×3 ÎŒm to 1×1 ÎŒm, respectively. The time to mill a 1×1 ÎŒm via with a 68 keV Ga+ beam, of 220 Pa current is 60 s. In a system optimized for this application, this milling time is expected to be reduced by a factor of at least 100. In addition, cuts have been made in 1‐Όm‐thick Al films covered by 0.65 ÎŒm of SiO2. These cuts have resistances in excess of 20 MΩ. This method of circuit restructuring can work at dimensions a factor of 10 smaller than laser zapping and requires no special sites to be fabricated

    Atomic-scale representation and statistical learning of tensorial properties

    This chapter discusses the importance of incorporating three-dimensional symmetries in the context of statistical learning models geared towards the interpolation of the tensorial properties of atomic-scale structures. We focus on Gaussian process regression, and in particular on the construction of structural representations, and the associated kernel functions, that are endowed with the geometric covariance properties compatible with those of the learning targets. We summarize the general formulation of such a symmetry-adapted Gaussian process regression model, and how it can be implemented based on a scheme that generalizes the popular smooth overlap of atomic positions representation. We give examples of the performance of this framework when learning the polarizability and the ground-state electron density of a molecule

    Channelling figurativity through narrative : the paranarrative in fiction and non-fiction

    Contrary to wide-spread assumptions, metaphor in narrative is not a pre-established, extra-textual form appearing in different instances of discourse, but rather an event resulting from a strategic distribution of information in the narrative process. Hence, the appeal to conceptual cultural knowledge is to be considered as a consequence, and not as a prerequisite of metaphor interpretation. By means of the concept of the paranarrative, we highlight the rhetorical interconnectedness of metaphor with other figures of speech (such as metonymy) and we explore the narrative integration of diacritic forms of indirectness. In order to illustrate the terminology that can address these focal concerns, the paper discusses the relation between tropes and narrative, via selected examples from narrative texts (both fictional and non-fictional) written by Juli Zeh, Herta MĂŒller, JĂŒrgen Nieraad, and Siddhartha Mukherjee. As their common denominator, these examples channel through narrative figurative domains considered to be known intuitively to wit: personifications; iconic pars pro toto references to concentration camps; and metaphors for cancer in disease biographies

    An unfolding signifier: London's Baltic Exchange in Tallinn

    In the summer of 2007 an unusual cargo arrived at Muuga and Paldiski harbors outside Tallinn. It consisted of nearly 50 containers holding over 1,000 tons of building material ranging from marble columns, staircases and fireplaces, to sculpted allegorical figures, wooden paneling and old-fashioned telephone booths. They were once part of the Baltic Exchange in the City of London. Soon they will become facets of the landscape of Tallinn. The following article charts this remarkable story and deploys this fragmented monument to analyze three issues relating to the Estonian capital: the relocation of the ‘Bronze Soldier’, the demolition of the Sakala Culture Center, and Tallinn’s future role as European Cultural Capital in 2011

    Coplanar Waveguide Resonators for Circuit Quantum Electrodynamics

    We have designed and fabricated superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators with fundamental frequencies from 2 to 9GHz9 \rm{GHz} and loaded quality factors ranging from a few hundreds to a several hundred thousands reached at temperatures of 20mK20 \rm{mK}. The loaded quality factors are controlled by appropriately designed input and output coupling capacitors. The measured transmission spectra are analyzed using both a lumped element model and a distributed element transmission matrix method. The experimentally determined resonance frequencies, quality factors and insertion losses are fully and consistently characterized by the two models for all measured devices. Such resonators find prominent applications in quantum optics and quantum information processing with superconducting electronic circuits and in single photon detectors and parametric amplifiers.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, version with high resolution figures available at http://qudev.ethz.ch/content/science/PubsPapers.htm

    Altered intercellular communication in lung fibroblast cultures from patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

    RATIONALE: Gap junctions are membrane channels formed by an array of connexins which links adjacent cells realizing an electro- metabolic synapse. Connexin-mediated communication is crucial in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, and development. The activation and proliferation of phenotypically altered fibroblasts are central events in the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. We sought to evaluate the role of connexin-43, the most abundant gap-junction subunit in the human lung, in the pathogenesis of this condition. METHODS: We investigated the transcription and protein expression of connexin-43 and the gap-junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) in 5 primary lung fibroblast lines derived from normal subjects (NF) and from 3 histologically proven IPF patients (FF). RESULTS: Here we show that connexin-43 mRNA was significantly reduced in FF as demonstrated by standard and quantitative RT-PCR. GJIC was functionally evaluated by means of flow-cytometry. In order to demonstrate that dye spreading was taking place through gap junctions, we used carbenoxolone as a pharmacological gap-junction blocker. Carbenoxolone specifically blocked GJIC in our system in a concentration dependent manner. FF showed a significantly reduced homologous GJIC compared to NF. Similarly, GJIC was significantly impaired in FF when a heterologous NF line was used as dye donor, suggesting a complete defect in GJIC of FF. CONCLUSION: These results suggest a novel alteration in primary lung fibroblasts from IPF patients. The reduced Cx43 expression and the associated alteration in cell-to-cell communication may justify some of the known pathological characteristic of this devastating disease that still represents a challenge to the medical practice
