Overview of (pro-)Lie group structures on Hopf algebra character groups
Character groups of Hopf algebras appear in a variety of mathematical and
physical contexts. To name just a few, they arise in non-commutative geometry,
renormalisation of quantum field theory, and numerical analysis. In the present
article we review recent results on the structure of character groups of Hopf
algebras as infinite-dimensional (pro-)Lie groups. It turns out that under mild
assumptions on the Hopf algebra or the target algebra the character groups
possess strong structural properties. Moreover, these properties are of
interest in applications of these groups outside of Lie theory. We emphasise
this point in the context of two main examples: The Butcher group from
numerical analysis and character groups which arise from the Connes--Kreimer

On the construction of high-order force gradient algorithms for integration of motion in classical and quantum systems
A consequent approach is proposed to construct symplectic force-gradient
algorithms of arbitrarily high orders in the time step for precise integration
of motion in classical and quantum mechanics simulations. Within this approach
the basic algorithms are first derived up to the eighth order by direct
decompositions of exponential propagators and further collected using an
advanced composition scheme to obtain the algorithms of higher orders. Contrary
to the scheme by Chin and Kidwell [Phys. Rev. E 62, 8746 (2000)], where
high-order algorithms are introduced by standard iterations of a force-gradient
integrator of order four, the present method allows to reduce the total number
of expensive force and its gradient evaluations to a minimum. At the same time,
the precision of the integration increases significantly, especially with
increasing the order of the generated schemes. The algorithms are tested in
molecular dynamics and celestial mechanics simulations. It is shown, in
particular, that the efficiency of the new fourth-order-based algorithms is
better approximately in factors 5 to 1000 for orders 4 to 12, respectively. The
results corresponding to sixth- and eighth-order-based composition schemes are
also presented up to the sixteenth order. For orders 14 and 16, such highly
precise schemes, at considerably smaller computational costs, allow to reduce
unphysical deviations in the total energy up in 100 000 times with respect to

Cell delivery systems using alginate : carrageenan hydrogel beads and fibers for regenerative medicine applications
The present work was focused on the development and characterization of new hydrogel systems based on natural
origin polymers, namely, alginate and carrageenan, into different formats and with adequate properties to sustain the viability of
encapsulated cells, envisioning their application as cell delivery vehicles for tissue regeneration. Different formulations of alginate
and carrageenan hydrogels and different processing parameters were considered to determine the best conditions required to
achieve the most adequate response in terms of the mechanical stability, cell viability, and functionality of the developed systems.
The morphology, size, and structure of the hydrogels and their degradation behavior and mechanical properties were evaluated
during this study. In addition to cytotoxicity studies, preliminary experiments were carried out to investigate the ability of
alginate−carrageenan beads/fibers to encapsulate chondrocytes. The results obtained indicated that the different formulations,
both in the form of beads and fibers, have considerable potential as cell-carrier materials for cell delivery in tissue engineering/

Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee for Fisheries. Evaluation of fishing effort regimes - Deep sea and Western waters (STECF-11-12)
EWG-11-11 meeting was held on 26 – 30 September 2011 in Cadiz (Spain). This Section of the report covers the Deep Sea and Western Waters and provides fleet specific trends in catch (including discards), nominal effort and catch (landings) per unit of effort in order to advise on fleet specific impacts on stocks under multiannual management plans. STECF reviewed the report during its November 2011 plenary meeting
Molecular Cytogenetic Analysis of the European Hake Merluccius merluccius (Merlucciidae, Gadiformes): U1 and U2 snRNA Gene Clusters Map to the Same Location
The European hake (Merluccius merluccius) is a highly valuable and intensely fished species
in which a long-term alive stock has been established in captivity for aquaculture purposes.
Due to their huge economic importance, genetic studies on hakes were mostly
focused on phylogenetic and phylogeographic aspects; however chromosome numbers
are still not described for any of the fifteen species in the genus Merluccius. In this work we
report a chromosome number of 2n = 42 and a karyotype composed of three meta/submetacentric
and 18 subtelo/telocentric chromosome pairs. Telomeric sequences appear
exclusively at both ends of every single chromosome. Concerning rRNA genes, this species
show a single 45S rDNA cluster at an intercalary location on the long arm of subtelocentric
chromosome pair 12; the single 5S rDNA cluster is also intercalary to the long arm of chromosome
pair 4. While U2 snRNA gene clusters map to a single subcentromeric position on
chromosome pair 13, U1 snRNA gene clusters seem to appear on almost all chromosome
pairs, but showing bigger clusters on pairs 5, 13, 16, 17 and 19. The brightest signals on
pair 13 are coincident with the single U2 snRNA gene cluster signals. Therefore, the use of
these probes allows the unequivocal identification of at least 7 of the chromosome pairs that
compose the karyotype of Merluccius merluccius thus opening the way to integrate molecular
genetics and cytological data on the study of the genome of this important species.Versión del editor4,411
Essential Medicines at the National Level : The Global Asthma Network's Essential Asthma Medicines Survey 2014
Patients with asthma need uninterrupted supplies of affordable, quality-assured essential medicines. However, access in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is limited. The World Health Organization (WHO) Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Global Action Plan 2013-2020 sets an 80% target for essential NCD medicines' availability. Poor access is partly due to medicines not being included on the national Essential Medicines Lists (EML) and/or National Reimbursement Lists (NRL) which guide the provision of free/subsidised medicines. We aimed to determine how many countries have essential asthma medicines on their EML and NRL, which essential asthma medicines, and whether surveys might monitor progress. A cross-sectional survey in 2013-2015 of Global Asthma Network principal investigators generated 111/120 (93%) responses41 high-income countries and territories (HICs); 70 LMICs. Patients in HICs with NRL are best served (91% HICs included ICS (inhaled corticosteroids) and salbutamol). Patients in the 24 (34%) LMICs with no NRL and the 14 (30%) LMICs with an NRL, however no ICS are likely to have very poor access to affordable, quality-assured ICS. Many LMICs do not have essential asthma medicines on their EML or NRL. Technical guidance and advocacy for policy change is required. Improving access to these medicines will improve the health system's capacity to address NCDs.Peer reviewe
Obstacles on the way to the clinical visualisation of beta cells: looking for the Aeneas of molecular imaging to navigate between Scylla and Charybdis
For more than a decade, researchers have been trying to develop non-invasive imaging techniques for the in vivo measurement of viable pancreatic beta cells. However, in spite of intense research efforts, only one tracer for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging is currently under clinical evaluation. To many diabetologists it may remain unclear why the imaging world struggles to develop an effective method for non-invasive beta cell imaging (BCI), which could be useful for both research and clinical purposes. Here, we provide a concise overview of the obstacles and challenges encountered on the way to such BCI, in both native and transplanted islets. We discuss the major difficulties posed by the anatomical and cell biological features of pancreatic islets, as well as the chemical and physical limits of the main imaging modalities, with special focus on PET, SPECT and MRI. We conclude by indicating new avenues for future research in the field, based on several remarkable recent results
