    The Antioxidant Activity of New Coumarin Derivatives

    The antioxidant activity of two synthesized coumarins namely, N-(4,7-dioxo-2- phenyl-1,3-oxazepin-3(2H,4H,7H)-yl)-2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yloxy)acetamide 5 and N-(4-oxo-2-phenylthiazolidin-3-yl)-2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yloxy)acetamide 6 were studied with the DPPH, hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide radical methods and compared with the known antioxidant ascorbic acid. Compounds 5 and 6 were synthesized in a good yield from the addition reaction of maleic anhydride or mercaptoacetic acid to compound 4, namely N′-benzylidene-2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yloxy)acetohydrazide. Compound 4 was synthesized by the condensation of compound 3, namely 2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yloxy) acetohydrazide, with benzaldehyde. Compound 3, however, was synthesized from the addition of hydrazine to compound 2, namely ethyl 2-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yloxy)acetate, which was synthesized from the reaction of ethyl bromoacetate with 4-hydroxycoumarin 1.     Distribution of silicoflagellates in plankton and core top samples from the Gulf of California

    Plankton and surface sediment samples from the Gulf of California were examined to determine the present geographic distribution of silicoflagellate species in this area. Variations in the species composition of the silicoflagellate assemblage were found to be related to water mass distributions. Eight species were identified in these samples. Octactis pulchra is associated with high levels of primary productivity in the surface waters and is found in greatest abundance in the central Gulf of California. Dictyocha messanensis dominates the silicoflagellate assemblage in stations outside the Gulf of California and increases in relative abundance with decreasing amounts of Octactis pulchra. Dictyocha calida, Dictyocha sp. A, and Dictyocha sp. B are associated with equatorial waters and have the highest relative abundance near the mouth of the Gulf. Dictyocha epiodon and Distephanus speculum are associated with cold California Current Water, and Dictyocha epiodon is present in minor abundance in Gulf samples.     Total hip arthroplasty carried out using cemented modular-neck implants provides the surgeon with greater intra-operative flexibility and allows more controlled stem positioning. In this study, finite element models of a whole femur implanted with either the Exeter or with a new cemented modular-neck total hip arthroplasty (separate, neck and stem components) were developed. The changes in bone and cement mantle stress/strain were assessed for varying amounts of neck offset and version angle for the modular-neck device for two simulated physiological load cases: walking and stair climbing. Since the Exeter is the gold standard for polished cemented total hip arthroplasty stem design, bone and cement mantle stresses/strains in the modular-neck finite element models were compared with finite element results for the Exeter

    Can health promotion videos ‘go viral’? A non-randomised, controlled, before-and-after pilot study to measure the spread and impact of local language mobile videos in Burkina Faso

    Background: Mobile phones present a new health communications opportunity but use of mobile videos warrants more exploration. Our study tested a new idea: to produce health promotion videos in languages for which films have never previously been produced to see if they were widely shared. Objective: To investigate whether the novelty of films in local languages focusing on health messages would be shared ‘virally’ among the target population. Methods: A non-randomised, controlled, before-and-after study was used to evaluate the reach and impact of the intervention. We gave short health promotion videos on memory cards to distributors in eight intervention villages. Ten control villages, where no video distribution took place were randomly selected. We conducted cluster-level difference-in-difference logistic regression to assess self-reported knowledge indicators. We calculated odds ratios for intervention relative to control at baseline and endline and p-values for the change in odds ratios. Results: Seven hundred and eight mothers were interviewed across all villages at baseline and 728 different mothers and 726 men were interviewed in the same villages a year later in October 2015. At endline, 32% of women and 44% of men in the intervention arm had ever seen a film on a mobile phone in Lobiri, compared to 1% of women and 2% of men in the control arm. There was a significant increase in the odds of knowing about giving Orasel to a child with diarrhoea in the intervention area relative to the control area. Awareness of the need to take a child with fever or symptoms of pneumonia to a health centre increased in the intervention area, but not significantly. Conclusions: Viral sharing of films on mobile phones has the potential to be an effective health promotion tool for communities whose languages are not served by existing mass media channels.</p
