Yggdrasil and the Stave Church
In this excerpt from his book, Tree of Salvation, Murphy explores how those who introduced Christianity to Scandinavia deliberately adapted and “translated” Norse religious motifs and practices in two parallel ways—through literary works, especially as seen in the Heliand, but also through church art and architecture. In this illustrated essay, we can see how beliefs about Yggdrasil and Ragnarok are incorporated and transformed in the design and ornamentation of the unusual stave churches of Norway. Reproduction and Growth of Black Drum, Pogonias cromis, in Northeast Florida
Age, growth, and reproduction of black drum, Pogonias cromis, in northeast Florida were investigated between December 1983 and April 1985. Male black drum began maturing at 450-499 mm total length (TL), with 50% of them reaching maturity at about 590 mm (age 4 or 5). Vitellogenesis began at 450-550 mm TL, with 50% of the females reaching maturity at 650-699 mm (age 5 or 6). Spawning occurred during January - April. Thin sections of otoliths displayed distinct opaque bands; the first three or four of these bands were verified by marginal increment analysis as being annuli deposited during March - May. The growth rate was about 100 mm yr-1 for ages 1·3 and gradually slowed to 10·30 mm yr-1 for ages 15-20. Male and female growth rates did not differ significantly, at least through age 4. Length at age was predicted well by the equation mm TL = 1172 mm (1 - exp (- 0.12 (AGE+ 1.3))). The apparent maximum age of black drum is about 50-60 years
Directionality of Solar Flare Accelerated Protons and Alpha Particles from Gamma-Ray Line Measurements
The energies and widths of gamma-ray lines emitted by ambient nuclei excited
by flare-accelerated protons and alpha particles provide information on the
ions directionality and spectra, and on the characteristics of the interaction
region. We have measured the energies and widths of strong lines from
de-excitations of 12C, 16O, and 20Ne in solar flares as a function of
heliocentric angle. The line energies from all three nuclei exhibit ~1%
redshifts for flares at small heliocentric angles, but are not shifted near the
limb. The lines have widths of ~3% FWHM. We compare the 12C line measurements
for flares at five different heliocentric angles with calculations for
different interacting-particle distributions. A downward isotropic distribution
(or one with a small upward component) provides a good fit to the line
measurements. An angular distribution derived for particles that undergo
significant pitch angle scattering by MHD turbulence in coronal magnetic loops
provides comparably good fits
Brecht and the Bible: A Study of Religious Nihilism and Human Weakness in Brecht's Drama of Morality and the City
This study identifies the underlying patterns of persistent biblical allusion in the work of renowned playwright Bertolt Brecht. Rather than reducing Brecht's use of the Bible to the purely satirical, the author interprets the full dramatic function of Brecht's complex use of scripture. Using examples from plays written throughout the span of Brecht's career, Murphy shows how Brecht invokes the stories of Old Testament figures such as Job and Isaiah as well as the crucifixion accounts of the New Testament in order to build sympathetic characters and explore his more political themes
Effect of water temperature on cattle performance
When average outside air temperature was about 40 F, water temperatures of 40, 60, Of\u27 80 F had little effect on water intakes of yearling steers and heifers. In addition, there were no significant differences in average daily feed or efficiency. No electrical energy was required to maintain water at 40 F, and it took about twice as much electricity to maintain water at 80 F instead of 60 F
The Emergence of Spanking Among a Representative Sample of Children Under 2 Years of Age in North Carolina
Spanking is common in the United States but less common in many European countries in which it has been outlawed. Being spanked has been associated with child abuse victimization, poor self-esteem, impaired parent–child relationships, and child and adult mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral consequences. Being spanked as a child has also been shown to increase the likelihood of abusing one's own children or spouse as an adult. Spanking of very young children less than two is almost never recommended even among experts that consider spanking as reasonable in some circumstances. Using a cross-sectional anonymous telephone survey, we describe spanking rates among a representative sample of North Carolina mothers of children less than 2 years old and the association of spanking with demographic characteristics. A substantial proportion of mothers admit to spanking their very young children. The rate of spanking in the last year among all maternal respondents was 30%. Over 5% of the mothers of 3-month olds reported spanking. Over 70% of the mothers of 23-month olds reported spanking. Increased spanking was associated with higher age of the child and lower maternal age. With every month of age, a child had 27% increased odds of being spanked. Early spanking has been shown to be associated with poor cognitive development in early childhood. Further, early trauma has been shown to have significant effects on the early developing brain. It is therefore critical that health and human services professionals address the risk of corporal punishment as a method of discipline early in the life of the child. The spanking of very young children may be an appropriate locus for policy and legislative debates regarding corporal punishment
Functional 3D architecture in an intrinsically disordered E3 ligase domain facilitates ubiquitin transfer

Additionally J.C.P. thanks the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) and the University of St. Andrews for financial support.The human genome contains an estimated 600 ubiquitin E3 ligases, many of which are single-subunit E3s (ssE3s) that can bind to both substrate and ubiquitin-loaded E2 (E2~Ub). Within ssE3s structural disorder tends to be located in substrate binding and domain linking regions. RNF4 is a ssE3 ligase with a C-terminal RING domain and disordered N-terminal region containing SUMO Interactions Motifs (SIMs) required to bind SUMO modified substrates. Here we show that, although the N-terminal region of RNF4 bears no secondary structure, it maintains a compact global architecture primed for SUMO interaction. Segregated charged regions within the RNF4 N-terminus promote compaction, juxtaposing RING domain and SIMs to facilitate substrate ubiquitination. Mutations that induce a more extended shape reduce ubiquitination activity. Our result offer insight into a key step in substrate ubiquitination by a member of the largest ubiquitin ligase subtype and reveal how a defined architecture within a disordered region contributes to E3 ligase function.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Coreceptor Choice and T Cell Depletion by R5, X4, and R5X4 HIV-1 Variants in CCR5-Deficient (CCR5Δ32) and Normal Human Lymphoid Tissue
AbstractCoreceptor utilization by HIV-1 is an important determinant of pathogenesis. However, coreceptor selectivity is defined in vitro, while in vivo critical pathogenic events occur in lymphoid tissues. Using pharmacological inhibitors, we recently provided evidence that coreceptor selectivity by the R5X4 dual-tropic isolate 89.6 was more restricted in ex vivo infected lymphoid tissue than in vitro [S. Glushakova, Y. Yi, J. C. Grivel, A. Singh, D. Schols, E. De Clercq, R. G. Collman, and L. Margolis (1999). J. Clin. Invest. 104, R7–R11]. Here we extend those observations using CCR5-deficient (CCR5Δ32) lymphoid tissue as well as additional primary isolates. We definitively show that neither CCR5 nor secondary coreceptors used in vitro mediate 89.6 infection in lymphoid tissue. We also demonstrate that restricted coreceptor use in lymphoid tissue ex vivo compared with in vitro utilization occurs with other dual-tropic primary isolates and is not unique to 89.6. For all strains tested that are dual tropic in vitro, severe CD4 T cell depletion in lymphoid tissue correlated with preferential CXCR4 use in this ex vivo system
The Australia Telescope 20GHz (AT20G) Survey: analysis of the extragalactic source sample
The Australia Telescope 20 GHz (AT20G) survey is a blind survey of the whole
Southern sky at 20 GHz with follow-up observations at 4.8, 8.6, and 20 GHz
carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). In this paper we
present an analysis of radio spectral properties in total intensity and
polarisation, sizes, optical identifications, and redshifts of the sample of
the 5808 extragalactic sources in the survey catalogue of confirmed sources
over the whole Southern sky excluding the strip at Galactic latitude
|b|<1.5deg. The sample has a flux density limit of 40 mJy. Completeness has
been measured as a function of scan region and flux density. Averaging over the
whole survey area the follow-up survey is 78% complete above 50mJy and 93%
complete above 100mJy. 3332 sources with declination <-15deg have good quality
almost simultaneous observations at 4.8, 8.6, and 20GHz. The spectral analysis
shows that the sample is dominated by flat-spectrum sources. The fraction of
flat-spectrum sources decreases from 81% for 20GHz flux densities S>500mJy, to
60% for S<100mJy. There is also a clear spectral steepening at higher
frequencies with the median spectral index decreasing from -0.16 between 4.8
and 8.6GHz to -0.28 between 8.6 and 20GHz. Simultaneous observations in
polarisation are available for all the sources at all the frequencies. 768
sources have a good quality detection of polarised flux density at 20GHz; 467
of them were also detected in polarisation at 4.8 and/or at 8.6GHz so that it
has been possible to compare the spectral behaviour in total intensity and
polarisation. We have found that the polarised fraction increases slightly with
frequency and decreases with flux density. Cross matches and comparisons have
been made with other catalogues at lower radio frequencies, and in the optical,
