Analysis and identification of subsynchronous vibration for a high pressure parallel flow centrifugal compressor
The summary of a complete analytical design evaluation of an existing parallel flow compressor is presented and a field vibration problem that manifested itself as a subsynchronous vibration that tracked at approximately 2/3 of compressor speed is reviewed. The comparison of predicted and observed peak response speeds, frequency spectrum content, and the performance of the bearing-seal systems are presented as the events of the field problem are reviewed. Conclusions and recommendations are made as to the degree of accuracy of the analytical techniques used to evaluate the compressor design
Directionality of Solar Flare Accelerated Protons and Alpha Particles from Gamma-Ray Line Measurements
The energies and widths of gamma-ray lines emitted by ambient nuclei excited
by flare-accelerated protons and alpha particles provide information on the
ions directionality and spectra, and on the characteristics of the interaction
region. We have measured the energies and widths of strong lines from
de-excitations of 12C, 16O, and 20Ne in solar flares as a function of
heliocentric angle. The line energies from all three nuclei exhibit ~1%
redshifts for flares at small heliocentric angles, but are not shifted near the
limb. The lines have widths of ~3% FWHM. We compare the 12C line measurements
for flares at five different heliocentric angles with calculations for
different interacting-particle distributions. A downward isotropic distribution
(or one with a small upward component) provides a good fit to the line
measurements. An angular distribution derived for particles that undergo
significant pitch angle scattering by MHD turbulence in coronal magnetic loops
provides comparably good fits
Self-assembly of iron nanoclusters on the Fe3O4(111) superstructured surface
We report on the self-organized growth of a regular array of Fe nanoclusters
on a nanopatterned magnetite surface. Under oxidizing preparation conditions
the (111) surface of magnetite exhibits a regular superstructure with
three-fold symmetry and a 42 A periodicity. This superstructure represents an
oxygen terminated (111) surface, which is reconstructed to form a periodically
strained surface. This strain patterned surface has been used as a template for
the growth of an ultrathin metal film. A Fe film of 0.5 A thickness was
deposited on the substrate at room temperature. Fe nanoclusters are formed on
top of the surface superstructure creating a regular array with the period of
the superstructure. We also demonstrate that at least the initial stage of Fe
growth occurs in two-dimensional mode. In the areas of the surface where the
strain pattern is not formed, random nucleation of Fe was observed.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

We prove a q-analogue of the Carter-Payne theorem in the case where the
differences between the parts of the partitions are sufficiently large. We
identify a layer of the Jantzen filtration which contains the image of these

Isometric Representations of Totally Ordered Semigroups
Let S be a subsemigroup of an abelian torsion-free group G. If S is a
positive cone of G, then all C*-algebras generated by faithful isometrical
non-unitary representations of S are canonically isomorphic. Proved by Murphy,
this statement generalized the well-known theorems of Coburn and Douglas. In
this note we prove the reverse. If all C*-algebras generated by faithful
isometrical non-unitary representations of S are canonically isomorphic, then S
is a positive cone of G. Also we consider G = Z\times Z and prove that if S
induces total order on G, then there exist at least two unitarily not
equivalent irreducible isometrical representation of S. And if the order is
lexicographical-product order, then all such representations are unitarily

The role of turbulent pressure as a coherent pulsational driving mechanism: the case of the delta Scuti star HD 187547
HD 187547 was the first candidate that led to the suggestion that solar-like
oscillations are present in delta Scuti stars. Longer observations, however,
show that the modes interpreted as solar-like oscillations have either very
long mode lifetimes, longer than 960 days, or are coherent. These results are
incompatible with the nature of `pure' stochastic excitation as observed in
solar-like stars. Nonetheless, one point is certain: the opacity mechanism
alone cannot explain the oscillation spectrum of HD 187547. Here we present new
theoretical investigations showing that convection dynamics can intrinsically
excite coherent pulsations in the chemically peculiar delta Scuti star HD
187547. More precisely, it is the perturbations of the mean Reynold stresses
(turbulent pressure) that drives the pulsations and the excitation takes place

Suprathermal plasma observed on STS-3 Mission by plasma diagnostics package
Artificially produced electron beams were used extensively during the past decade as a means of probing the magnetosphere, and more recently as a means of actively controlling spacecraft potential. Experimentation in these areas has proven valuable, yet at times confusing, due to the interaction of the electron beam with the ambient plasma. The OSS-1/STS-3 Mission in March 1982 provided a unique opportunity to study beam-plasma interactions at an altitude of 240 km. On board for this mission was a Fast Pulse Electron Generator (FPEG). Measurements made by the Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) while extended on the Orbiter RMS show modifications of the ion and electron energy distributions during electron beam injection. Observations made by charged particle detectors are discussed and related to measurements of Orbiter potential. Several of the PDP instruments, the joint PDP/FPEG experiment, and observations made during electron beam injection are described
