Analysis of crack propagation as an energy absorption mechanism in metal matrix composites
The crack initiation and crack propagation capability was extended to the previously developed generalized plane strain, finite element micromechanics analysis. Also, an axisymmetric analysis was developed, which contains all of the general features of the plane analysis, including elastoplastic material behavior, temperature-dependent material properties, and crack propagation. These analyses were used to generate various example problems demonstrating the inelastic response of, and crack initiation and propagation in, a boron/aluminum composite
Polarized Scattering in the Vicinty of Galaxies
Some bright cD galaxies in cluster cooling flows have Thomson optical depths
exceeding 0.01. A few percent of their luminosity is scattered and appears as
diffuse polarized emission. We calculate the scattering process for different
geometric combinations of luminosity sources and scattering media. We apply our
results to galaxies, with and without active nuclei, immersed in cooling flows.
We model observations of NGC 1275 and M87 (without active nuclei) in the
presence of sky and galactic background fluxes which hinder the measurement of
the scattered light at optical wavelengths. Current instruments are unable to
detect the scattered light from such objects. However, when a galaxy has an
active nucleus of roughly the same luminosity as the remainder of the galaxy in
V, both the total and polarized scattered intensity should observable on large
scales (5--30kpc), meaning intensity levels greater than 1% of the background
level. For typical AGN and galaxy spectral distributions, the scattering is
most easily detected at short (U) wavelengths. We point out that a number of
such cases will occur. We show that the radiation pattern from the central
nuclear region can be mapped using the scattering. We also show that the

Energy absorption mechanisms during crack propagation in metal matrix composites
The stress distributions around individual fibers in a unidirectional boron/aluminum composite material subjected to axial and transverse loadings are being studied utilizing a generalized plane strain finite element analysis. This micromechanics analysis was modified to permit the analysis of longitudinal sections, and also to incorporate crack initiation and propagation. The analysis fully models the elastoplastic response of the aluminum matrix, as well as temperature dependent material properties and thermal stress effects. The micromechanics analysis modifications are described, and numerical results are given for both longitudinal and transverse models loaded into the inelastic range, to first failure. Boson Pairs in a One-dimensional Split Trap
We describe the properties of a pair of ultracold bosonic atoms in a
one-dimensional harmonic trapping potential with a tunable zero-ranged barrier
at the trap centre. The full characterisation of the ground state is done by
calculating the reduced single-particle density, the momentum distribution and
the two-particle entanglement. We derive several analytical expressions in the
limit of infinite repulsion (Tonks-Girardeau limit) and extend the treatment to
finite interparticle interactions by numerical solution. As pair interactions
in double wells form a fundamental building block for many-body systems in
periodic potentials, our results have implications for a wide range of

Quantum Chessboards in the Deuterium Molecular Ion
We present a new algorithm for vibrational control in deuterium molecules
that is feasible with current experimental technology. A pump mechanism is used
to create a coherent superposition of the D2+ vibrations. A short, intense
infrared control pulse is applied after a chosen delay time to create selective
interferences. A `chessboard' pattern of states can be realized in which a set
of even- or odd-numbered vibrational states can be selectively annihilated or
enhanced. A technique is proposed for experimental realization and observation
of this effect using 5 fs pulses of 790 nm radiation, with intermediate

Pathways for Nutrient Loss to Water; Slurry and Fertilizer Spreading
End of project reportThere are almost 150,000 farms in Ireland and these contribute substantial quantities of N and P to inland and coastal waters. Some of these nutrients are carried from wet soils by overland flow and by leaching from dry soils. Farm practice can reduce the loss from farms by judicious management of nutrients. Improvements are required to diminish export of nutrients without impairing operations on the farm. Literature regarding nutrient loss from agriculture was reviewed in this project and maps were prepared to predict best slurry spreading times around Ireland. Two further maps were prepared to show slurry storage requirement on farms
Seeing is believing: an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the experiences of the ‘spiritual but not religious’ in Britain
A majority of the British population now consider themselves not religious, but many of these individuals still have some beliefs they consider spiritual. This study explores the connections between the beliefs and practices of five British participants who identified as ‘spiritual but not religious’ (SBNR). Semi-structured interviews with each participant were analyzed inductively using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). This analysis developed seven sub-themes that were organized into two superordinate themes: ‘Experiencing Transcendence’ and ‘Constructing a Personal Spirituality’. The participants’ spirituality was an important part of their identities and lives. They pragmatically and eclectically drew on a wide range of spiritual tools and resources to enrich their lives. In a complex world where they considered traditional sources of religious or spiritual authority untrustworthy, the participants developed their own answers to existential questions that resonated with their own experiences of the world. Both their personal experiences and sociocultural influences were important in shaping and sustaining the participants’ worldviews and practices. These idiosyncratic ways that individuals made sense of their experiences show why it is important the research tools used to study worldview dynamics are sensitive to a wide range of factors and the iterative interactions between them
