Key success factors for achieving green supply chain performance : a study of UK ISO 14001 certified manufacturers

Recently, there has been increasing emphasis on the use of voluntary environmental protection instruments such as environmental management systems (EMS). One such system is ISO 14001 which is designed to assist organisations to create a structured mechanism for continuous improvement in environmental performance. However, more knowledge is required to identify the impact these systems have on the actual environmental supply chain practices performance (GSCPP) of manufacturing organisations. Furthermore many investigations of the supply chain are based on ―hard‖ factors such as the application of systems and tools to achieve performance goals. What are less appreciated are the effects of human dimensions of managing relationships with employees and suppliers. Accordingly this research will investigate the relations and dynamics of the Key Success Factors (KSF), (training, communication, management support, employee responsibility, rewards and recognition, employee involvement, and supplier management) which are believed to assist in the improvement of GSCPP of manufacturing companies. This research sets its objectives on advancing the knowledge and understanding of the roles of key success factors in supply chain operations, how these KSF function as separate factors or work together and how they are being put into practice in manufacturing organisations. A mixed method explanatory approach adopting a questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews are used to describe these phenomena and explore the reasons for and reveals inhibitors of the implementation of KSF.Key findings from this study are the development of a new mega-construct to measure internal soft management practices in organisations. Organisations successfully achieving green supply chain performance are applying a combination of key success factors such as employee responsibility and collaboration with suppliers. In-depth case studies also illustrate how these KSF manifest themselves and work together in real life. Evidence from the analysis demonstrates that despite the ISO 14001 certification some organisations are behaving in a more reactive fashion providing only the bare minimum in terms of training, where there is little emphasis on involvement of their employees, and where the management is largely unsupportive of a more comprehensive and integrated EMS.This research has three areas of contribution; to researchers who wish to further examine the combination of both hard and soft interpretations for environmental supply chain performance; to management practitioners who will benefit from the resulting tool will be able to assess the steps required to improve performance; and to those responsible for reviewing ISO 14001 who may include KSF and thus pass on the benefits to participating organisations

Purple Martin, \u3cem\u3eProgne subis\u3c/em\u3e, in San Luis Obispo County Riparian Habitat: Presence, Persistence, Nesting, Brooding and Reproductive Success

    Get PDF
The State of California, as of 2002, identified the Purple Martin as a bird species of Special Concern (Airola et al., 2003). These migrants were historically found in a unique habitat in Central California; nesting in natural cavities of Western Sycamores within Riparian Habitats. I am proposing that Purple Martins still successfully nest and brood young in this unique habitat in San Luis Obispo County. The primary study site is in Atascadero where Highway 41 meets San Gabriel Road and San Gabriel Road crosses Atascadero creek. The secondary site is Highway 58 in Santa Margarita where the highway crosses the Salinas River. After making observations from March 15th, 2009 to June 15th, 2009, Purple Martins were only confirmed present at the secondary site. The primary site in Atascadero had confirmed nesting in four separate cavities in Western Sycamores

Evaluating the Equivalency and Ecological Validity of TPITOS and ITERS-3 Ratings of Quality in New Hampshire’s Quality Recognition and Improvement System

Quality in early childhood care and education is increasingly being monitored through state-run Quality Rating/Recognition and Improvement Systems (QRISs), however, the design of these systems is under-researched. This study explores the alignment of two observation tools used in a QRIS to assess the quality of infant and toddler care and education – the Teaching Pyramid Infant-Toddler Observation Scale (TPITOS), and the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale, 3rd edition (ITERS-3). These two tools are central to the two pathways for center-based care providers in New Hampshire’s QRIS, which are designed to be equivalent but different methods for measuring quality. In this study, simultaneous TPITOS and ITERS-3 observations were conducted in 10 infant and toddler classrooms in New Hampshire. Quality ratings, according to the QRIS, were determined from scores on each of the tools. A regression analysis indicates a positive association between scores on the two tools, but an analysis of the quality ratings shows that New Hampshire’s QRIS lacks ecological validity. Recommendations for policy and research are provided

Memorialisation, settlement and identity in post-Plantation Ulster: Ardess Old Graveyard, Co. Fermanagh

    Get PDF
Grave memorials offer archaeologists a combined source of material and visual culture, which almost uniquely in the field of archaeology, can be directly related to named individuals. In the context of post-Plantation Ulster, grave memorials have the potential to provide invaluable insights in relation to the dynamics and subtleties of group identity within a colonial context. Roulston (1998) highlighted the significance of Ulster’s early grave memorials, emphasising the need to study all aspects of these memorials in order to fully understand the societies and associated identities that created them

Evaluation of a digital consultation and self-care advice tool in primary care: a multi-methods study

    Get PDF
Digital services are often regarded as a solution to the growing demands on primary care services. Provision of a tool offering advice to support self-management as well as the ability to digitally consult with a General Practitioner (GP) has the potential to alleviate some of the pressure on primary care. This paper reports on a Phase II, 6-month evaluation of eConsult, a web-based triage and consultation system that was piloted across 11 GP practices across Scotland. Through a multi-method approach the evaluation explored eConsult use across practices, exposing both barriers and facilitators to its adoption. Findings suggest that expectations that eConsult would offer an additional and alternative method of accessing GP services were largely met. However, there is less certainty that it has fulfilled expectations of promoting self-help. In addition, low uptake meant that evaluation of current effectiveness was difficult for practices to quantify. The presence of an eConsult champion(s) within the practice was seen to be a significant factor in ensuring successful integration of the tool. A lack of patient and staff engagement, insufficient support and lack of protocols around processes were seen as barriers to its success

Cilliní: lugares para el enterramiento de individuos infantiles en Irlanda

    Get PDF
Cilliní, or children’s burial grounds, are a recognized class of archaeological monument found throughout Ireland. The sites were most frequently used for the burial of unbaptised babies, although other members of Irish society who were considered unsuitable for burial in consecrated ground by the Roman Catholic Church could also be buried there. Such individuals included the mentally disabled, shipwrecked sailors, criminals and famine victims. Locations for cilliní were diverse and included deserted churches and graveyards; ancient monuments and natural landmarks. Although a considerable amount of archaeological interest has been shown towards cilliní they remain a poorly understood class of monument. As such, the paper will review the previous research that has been undertaken on these burial grounds before advancing a theory to explain their origin. The paper also explores the emotional impact that the burial of a child within a cillín would have had on its family, and questions recent research which has suggested that these were liminal sites on the Irish landscape
