Eu-doped Gallium nitride (GaN) is a promising candidate for GaN-based red light-emitting diodes, which are needed for future micro-display technologies. Introducing a superlattice structure comprised of alternating undoped and Eu-doped GaN layers has been observed to lead to an order-of-magnitude increase in output power; however, the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Here, we explore the optical and electrical properties of these superlattice structures utilizing terahertz emission spectroscopy. We find that ~0.1% Eu doping reduces the bandgap of GaN by ~40 meV and increases the index of refraction by ~20%, which would result in potential barriers and carrier confinement within a superlattice structure. To confirm the presence of these potential barriers, we explored the temperature dependence of the terahertz emission, which was used to estimate the barrier potentials. The result revealed that even a dilutely doped superlattice structure induces significant confinement for carriers, enhancing carrier recombination within the Eu-doped regions. Such an enhancement would improve the external quantum efficiency in the Eu-doped devices. We argue that the benefits of the superlattice structure are not limited to Eu-doped GaN, which provides a roadmap for enhanced optoelectronic functionalities in all rare-earth-doped semiconductor systems.Murakami F., Takeo A., Mitchell B., et al. Background:Apolipoprotein M (ApoM) is bound to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in plasma, and HDL has anticoagulation effects. However, the association between ApoM and biomarkers of coagulation was unclear. Therefore, we investigated relationships between ApoM and biomarkers of coagulation. Methods: Serum samples from 233 Japanese participants including with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or healthy controls were analyzed. Serum ApoM levels were measured using Enzyme-Linked Immuno-Sorbent Assay(ELISA). Results:Analysis of all 233 participants showed that ApoM levels were positively correlated with age (r=0.284, p<0.001), total cholesterol (TC;r=0.477, p<0.001), HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C;r=0.234, p<0.001) and lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C;r=0.331, p<0.001). Higher ApoM levels were correlated with shorter activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT;r=-0.226,p=0.001) and prothrombin time(PT,%;r=0.326,p< 0.001). Separate analysis of the 115 healthy controls showed that ApoM levels were positively correlated with age, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C, and higher ApoM levels were correlated with shorter PT. Conclusion:Serum levels of ApoM may influence biomarkers of coagulation

Meeting Abstract Enhancing Automatic Classification of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Images through Image Masking, Tissue Changes, and Trabecular Features

Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant tumor with hepatocellular differentiation and one of the most common cancers in the world. This type of cancer is often diagnosed when the survival time is measured in months causing high death rates Method We enhanced the classification process presented in [3] by including 11 features of tissue changes (i.e., features related to fatty change, cytoplasm colors, cell clearness index, and stroma) and 10 features of trabecular (e.g., nuclei-cytoplasmic ratio, irregularity of sinusoid, and trabecular arrangements). Furthermore, we apply a mask obtained by the stroma segmentation before calculating the 13 types of nuclear and structural features such that those features are derived from hepatocytes only, thus generating in total 177 features. The experiments were performed on a collection of region-ofinterest (ROI) images extracted from HE stained whole slide images (WSI), consisting of 1054 ROIs of HCC biopsy samples (504 negatives and 550 positives) and 1076 ROIs of HCC surgically resected samples (533 negatives and 543 positives). In the process, we made some combinations on the sets of features and sets of training data from both biopsy and surgery samples. As for the classification, we used 5-fold cross validation support vector machine (SVM) with LibSVM as our library. Results The results of classification experiment are summarized in Conclusion The combination of nuclear, trabecular, and other tissue features enables improved classification rate in HCC detection using SVM. Even though the image characteristics are different in biopsy and surgically resected samples, the same classification system gives good performance in both samples. The HCC classification scheme introduced in this paper is implemented in the prototype "feature measurement software for liver biopsy, " and the probability of HCC is visualized for every ROI in the WSI. It will support pathologists in the HCC diagnosis along with the quantitative measurements of tissue morphology

The 3rd DBCLS BioHackathon: improving life science data integration with Semantic Web technologies.

BACKGROUND: BioHackathon 2010 was the third in a series of meetings hosted by the Database Center for Life Sciences (DBCLS) in Tokyo, Japan. The overall goal of the BioHackathon series is to improve the quality and accessibility of life science research data on the Web by bringing together representatives from public databases, analytical tool providers, and cyber-infrastructure researchers to jointly tackle important challenges in the area of in silico biological research. RESULTS: The theme of BioHackathon 2010 was the 'Semantic Web', and all attendees gathered with the shared goal of producing Semantic Web data from their respective resources, and/or consuming or interacting those data using their tools and interfaces. We discussed on topics including guidelines for designing semantic data and interoperability of resources. We consequently developed tools and clients for analysis and visualization. CONCLUSION: We provide a meeting report from BioHackathon 2010, in which we describe the discussions, decisions, and breakthroughs made as we moved towards compliance with Semantic Web technologies - from source provider, through middleware, to the end-consumer.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. Probing photocarrier dynamics in a Bi2Te3–Te eutectic p–n junction with a laser terahertz emission microscope

Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3)-based heterostructures have attracted considerable attention owing to their interesting anisotropic properties and expected higher thermoelectric performance. Therefore, exploring the nature of the carrier dynamics in these heterostructures has been an important subject in the design and optimization of advanced materials. In the present study, hot carrier injection and its subsequent spatiotemporal behavior in a multilayered crystalline Bi2Te3–Tellurium (Te) eutectic composite were studied using a laser terahertz (THz) emission microscopy (LTEM). The THz emission electric fields at the Bi2Te3–Te interface were polarized perpendicular to the interface. The polarities of these waveforms reveal the direction of the electric field between the Bi2Te3 and Te regions, indicating the carrier types of these components and the p–n junction formed at the interface. In addition, in the Te region, a strong THz emission with an electric field polarized parallel to the interface was observed. This unique THz emission can be qualitatively explained through hot photocarrier anisotropic transport by considering the effective mass of electrons and holes. LTEM clarified the local carrier dynamics in the microstructures and revealed the potential distribution and anisotropic transport properties. These findings contribute to the exploration of eutectic heterostructures as new functional materials and provide new avenues for cutting-edge thermoelectric and photovoltaic devices
