    Rapid prototyping-coded masks for x-ray backscatter imaging

    Coded masks (CM) often lack a self-supporting structure that is difficult to manufacture without recourse to drilled holes in place of ideal square apertures, degrading imaging properties. An alternative approach is presented with three-dimensional (3-D) printed CM molds cast with a radio-opaque material that allows square elements to be retained. Two methods are presented; hot casting a bismuth alloy (density 8.6  g cm  −  3) and cold casting with tungsten powder/epoxy resin (densities 9.6 and 10.6  g cm  −  3). A critical review of 3-D printed-CM fabrication along with some typical x-ray backscatter images is presented. A signal-to-noise ratio from both the machined tungsten and cold cast 3-D printed mask were comparable, with the former having a slight advantage. Also, 3-D printed cold cast masks were found to be more economical and easier to rapid prototype over traditional drilled tungsten masks

    The PENELOPE Monte Carlo simulation code was used to evaluate pinhole mask parameters for X-ray backscatter imaging in a security application. This work makes four major contributions: it describes a convenient efficient test object for evaluating X-ray optics, it converts the PENELOPE output into a simulated CCD image, it compactly outlines how image characteristics can be simply and reproducibly quantified, and it gives guidance on suitable materials and geometries for pinhole masks for X-ray imaging that could be applied to more complicated X-ray optics, such as coded masks. A novel test object X-ray emitter with the shape of a thin wire was specifically designed to explore the effect of mask material thickness and pinhole aperture diameter on image quality. Setting the test object to be the X-ray emitter rather than being a passive scatterer increases computational speed. The photon energy distribution of the artificial test object was set flat between selected energy limits to avoid the model being specific to any particular X-ray source technology. The modelled detector is an array of 1040 x 1392 pixels’ area detector inside a lead-lined camera housing. The pixelated detector was modelled by digitising the surface area represented by the PENELOPE phase space file and integrating the energies of the photons impacting each pixel with MATLAB code. The pinhole must be wide enough for sufficient field of view, whilst narrow enough for sufficient spatial resolution and the mask material needs to be thick enough to absorb most X-rays. When the mask material was too thick and the aperture too narrow, a collimation effect occurred. The consequence of excess collimation in a coded aperture is partial coding giving poor image reconstruction. Pure tungsten appears the most versatile material tested, where a 2 mm thickness and 2 mm aperture gives the most appropriate image characteristics for X-ray security imaging

    Diabetes, intracranial stenosis and microemboli in asymptomatic carotid stenosis

    Background: The risk of stroke in patients with asymptomatic carotid stenosis (ACS) is now so low that it is important to have methods to identify those patients most likely to benefit from intervention, or who may require special consideration in choice of medical therapy. We studied the prediction of stroke, death or transient ischemic attacks (stroke/death/TIA) in patients with ACS by intracranial arterial stenosis, and microemboli on transcranial Doppler (TCD), and the effect of diabetes mellitus on microemboli, intracranial stenosis and risk of events. Methods: Patients with ACS \u3e 60% by Doppler ultrasound were recruited from the Stroke Prevention Clinic of University Hospital, London, Canada. All 339 participants underwent TCD for detection of intracranial stenosis and detection of microemboli, and carotid ultrasound to measure extracranial stenosis and total carotid plaque area. Participants were followed for three years, to determine the risk of stroke/death/TIA. Results: Stroke/death/TIA occurred in 38% of patients with microemboli versus 10% without (p=0.0001), and in 18% of patients with intracranial stenosis, versus 10% without (p=0.042). Diabetics were significantly more likely to have intracranial stenosis (45% vs. 29%, p =0.014), microemboli (38% vs. 10%, p \u3c0.0001), and had significantly higher risk of stroke/death/TIA over three years (21% vs. 11% without; p=0.024). Survival free of stroke, TIA or death was significantly better without microemboli or intracranial stenosis (p\u3c0.0001). Conclusions: Diabetes, microemboli and intracranial stenosis predicted higher risk of stroke, death or TIA than did extracranial stenosis or total plaque area; diabetics may need more intensive therapy

    Low open fraction coded masks for x-ray backscatter imaging

    Previous research has indicated that coded masks with open fractions <0.5 are optimal for imaging some types of far-field scenes. The open fraction, in this case, refers to the ratio of open elements in the mask, with values <0.5 considered as low open fraction. Research is limited by the sparsity of <0.5 open fractions masks; thus a further 94 lower open fraction arrays are calculated and presented. These include the dilute uniformly redundant array and singer set, along with information on imaging potential, array sizes, and open fractions.     Long period gratings were written step-by-step in microstructured poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) fibre using a continuous wave HeCd laser at 325nm irradiating the fibre with a power of 1mW. The grating had a length of 2 cm and a period of 1mm. A series of cladding mode coupling resonances were observed throughout the spectral region studied of 600 to 1100nm. The resonance wavelengths were shown to be sensitive to both surrounding refractive index and the water content of the polymer fibre

    Evolving Reliability and Maintainability Allocations for NASA Ground Systems

    This paper describes the methodology that was developed to allocate reliability and maintainability requirements for the NASA Ground Systems Development and Operations (GSDO) program's subsystems. As systems progressed through their design life cycle and hardware data became available, it became necessary to reexamine the previously derived allocations. Allocating is an iterative process; as systems moved beyond their conceptual and preliminary design phases this provided an opportunity for the reliability engineering team to reevaluate allocations based on updated designs and maintainability characteristics of the components. Trade-offs in reliability and maintainability were essential to ensuring the integrity of the reliability and maintainability analysis. This paper will discuss the value of modifying reliability and maintainability allocations made for the GSDO subsystems as the program nears the end of its design phase

    Association of homocysteine and smoking with cerebral microemboli in patients with mechanical heart valves: A transcranial Doppler study

    Objectives Microembolic signals (MES) on transcranial Doppler (TCD) predict stroke and cognitive decline. Plasma levels of total homocysteine (tHcy), a prothrombotic factor, are higher in patients with microemboli in carotid stenosis and in patients with paradoxical embolism. In this study we assessed the association between the level of tHcy and the number of MES in patients with mechanical heart valves (MHVs). Methods TCD monitoring was performed to detect MES before and after breathing 100% oxygen and repeated every 2-4 weeks up to six times. Results Twenty-five patients with MHVs (mean age: 63.60±10.15 years) participated in this study; 15 were men (66.47±7.25 years) and 10 were women (59.30±12.60 years). In total, there were 126 study visits. In multiple regression, higher tHcy was associated with more MES in both preoxygenation (OR 1.34 (95% CI 1.07 to 1.68, P=0.009)) and postoxygenation (OR 1.40 (95% CI 1.07 to 1.83, P=0.01)) phases. Current smoking and the length of time between the operation and monitoring also correlated with a higher number of MES before and after breathing oxygen, particularly in women. Conclusions Higher tHcy and smoking were associated with a higher MES count in both preoxygenation and postoxygenation phases. Because smoking can be stopped and hyperhomocysteinaemia is treatable, these are clinically important findings

    Scintigraphic assessment of sympathetic innervation after transmural versus nontransmural myocardial infarction

    To evaluate the feasibility of detecting denervated myocardium in the infarcted canine heart, the distribution of sympathetic nerve endings using 1–123 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) was compared with the distribution of perfusion using thallium-201, with the aid of color-coded computer functional map in 16 dogs. Twelve dogs underwent myocardial infarction by injection of vinyl latex into the left anterior descending coronary artery (transmural myocardial infarction, n = 6), or ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery (nontransmural myocardial infarction, n = 6). Four dogs served as sham-operated controls. Image patterns were compared with tissue norepinephrine content and with histofluorescence microscopic findings in biopsy specimens.Hearts with transmural infarction showed zones of absent MIBG and thallium, indicating scar. Adjacent and distal regions showed reduced MIBG but normal thallium uptake, indicating viable but denervated myocardium. Denervation distal to infarction was confirmed by reduced norepinephrine content and absence of nerve fluorescence. Nontransmural myocardial infarction showed zones of wall thinning with decreased thallium uptake and a greater reduction or absence of MIBG localized to the region of the infarct, with minimal extension of denervation beyond the infarct. Norepinephrine content was significantly reduced in the infarct zone, and nerve fluorescence was absent.These findings suggest that 1) MIBG imaging can detect viable and perfused but denervated myocardium after infarction; and 2) as opposed to the distal denervation produced by transmural infarction, nontransmural infarction may lead to regional ischemic damage of sympathetic nerves, but may spare subepicardial nerve trunks that course through the region of infarction to provide a source of innervation to distal areas of myocardium

    Massive Clumps in the NGC 6334 Star Forming Region

    We report observations of dust continuum emission at 1.2 mm toward the star forming region NGC 6334 made with the SEST SIMBA bolometer array. The observations cover an area of 2\sim 2 square degrees with approximately uniform noise. We detected 181 clumps spanning almost three orders of magnitude in mass (3\Msun6×103-6\times10^3 \Msun) and with sizes in the range 0.1--1.0 pc. We find that the clump mass function dN/dlogMdN/d\log M is well fit with a power law of the mass with exponent -0.6 (or equivalently dN/dMM1.6dN/dM \propto M^{-1.6}). The derived exponent is similar to those obtained from molecular line emission surveys and is significantly different from that of the stellar initial mass function. We investigated changes in the mass spectrum by changing the assumptions on the temperature distribution of the clumps and on the contribution of free-free emission to the 1.2 mm emission, and found little changes on the exponent. The Cumulative Mass Distribution Function is also analyzed giving consistent results in a mass range excluding the high-mass end where a power-law fit is no longer valid. The masses and sizes of the clumps observed in NGC 6334 indicate that they are not direct progenitors of stars and that the process of fragmentation determines the distribution of masses later on or occurs at smaller spatial scales. The spatial distribution of the clumps in NGC 6334 reveals clustering which is strikingly similar to that exhibited by young stars in other star forming regions.
