We study the self-modulation of a circularly polarized Alfven wave in a strongly magnetized relativistic electron-positron plasma with finite temperature. This nonlinear wave corresponds to an exact solution of the equations, with a dispersion relation that has two branches. For a large magnetic field, the Alfven branch has two different zones, which we call the normal dispersion zone (where d omega/dk > 0) and the anomalous dispersion zone (where d omega/dk < 0). A nonlinear Schrodinger equation is derived in the normal dispersion zone of the Alfven wave, where the wave envelope can evolve as a periodic wave train or as a solitary wave, depending on the initial condition. The maximum growth rate of the modulational instability decreases as the temperature is increased. We also study the Alfven wave propagation in the anomalous dispersion zone, where a nonlinear wave equation is obtained. However, in this zone the wave envelope can evolve only as a periodic wave train.CONICyT 21100839 74110049FONDECyT 1110135 1110729 1080658 1121144CNPqEuropean Commission for a Marie Curie International Incoming FellowshipInstitute for Fusion Studie

Self-modulation of nonlinear waves in a weakly magnetized relativistic electron-positron plasma with temperature

We develop a nonlinear theory for self-modulation of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave in a relativistic hot weakly magnetized electron-positron plasma. The case of parallel propagation along an ambient magnetic field is considered. A nonlinear Schrodinger equation is derived for the complex wave amplitude of a self-modulated wave packet. We show that the maximum growth rate of the modulational instability decreases as the temperature of the pair plasma increases. Depending on the initial conditions, the unstable wave envelope can evolve nonlinearly to either periodic wave trains or solitary waves. This theory has application to high-energy astrophysics and high-power laser physics.CONICyTFONDECyT 1110135 1080658Brazilian agency CNPqBrazilian agency FAPESPMarie Curie International Incoming Fellowshiphospitality of Paris ObservatoryInstitute for Fusion Studie

Public Value: A new approach to conceptualise and measure value in the University Technology Transfer domain.

Since 1990, in some developed and developing countries, policymakers have identified the importance of establishing and expanding University Technology Transfer Offices (UTTOs). UTTOs are principally tasked with helping transfer the knowledge generated by universities to broader society to advance long-term economic and social goals. As the importance placed on UTTOs has grown, so have efforts to conceptualise and measure the value that UTTOs deliver to society. Despite progress made, the process has been challenging. The influence of New Public Management (NPM) on universities and in the University Technology Transfer (De Beer et al.) domain has arguably been an obstacle to developing more holistic approaches to conceptualise and measure the value of research outcomes and remains a pressing issue. This thesis presents a new way of conceptualising and measuring the value produced by universities and delivered by UTTOs to society, drawing on the concept of Public Value, which is applied to the Australian (developed country) and Chilean (developing country) UTT domains. By deploying the Strategic Triangle and the Public Value Chain as diagnostic tools, this thesis critically examines the strengths and limitations of current ways of conceptualising and measuring the value transfer by Australian and Chilean UTTOs to society. Furthermore, this study suggests using Public Value as a framework of practice. The application of this tool could establish an empirical basis for measuring the activities of UTTOs in the short, medium and long-term, laying the foundation for a novel performance measurement system for UTTOs. The benefits of applying Public Value in the Australian and Chilean UTT domains have revealed insights and results that may guide policymakers, UTTO staff and university stakeholders in decisions based on a framework with practical experience in mind. It also allows the higher education sector to demonstrate its social value more effectively, using a range of more nuanced, long-term conceptualisations. In doing so, this thesis significantly contributes to theoretical and policy knowledge in UTT. Public value could be seen as a tool that helps understand value more broadly inside the UTT domain and potentially extends beyond commercialisation, allowing universities and their UTTOs to evolve and position themselves as value-generating enterprises

Shunguhuan Yuyai: The Battle for Kichwa Language and Culture Revitalization in Ecuador as Thinking-Feeling and Performance

    Get PDF
An indigenous language with more than one million speakers in Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, Kichwa is one of the most spoken indigenous languages in South America and an official language in Ecuador. Unfortunately, Kichwa is experiencing a rapid loss among young generations, which is leading to growing discontent about the education system, community and self-identity crises, among other issues. Furthermore, the situation of Kichwa is one example of a widespread indigenous language loss taking place worldwide, and it exemplifies the disappearance of indigenous cultures. It has been predicted that, by the end of the XXI century, approximately half of 7000 World languages will be extinct (Austin and Sallabank 2014, 2). Some more pessimistic sources provide an extinction rate by the end of the century up to 90%. However, there are efforts being done to revitalize endangered indigenous languages globally and, although many programs are struggling in their efforts, there are successful examples of revitalization through these programs. The best studied examples include languages like Maori, Hawaiian, and Basque. The purpose of this project is to understand Kichwa language revitalization in comparative perspective with other language programs. Within this goal, this thesis addresses four main issues: The first will be to look at the growth and challenges faced by Kichwa revitalization movement. Then, the reasons and arguments that Kichwa revitalization activists provide for the undertaking of such task will be presented. This will be done with the purpose of drawing initial lessons from past and present failing projects attempting Kichwa revival. Lastly, the signs of hope for future and current revitalization projects from each interlocutor in my project will be presented and analyzed. With these goals in mind, I will present how Kichwa revitalization movements are operating in Ecuador and how these efforts influence the younger generation of speakers.Bachelor of Art
