    It is well known that under mild conditions on a connected topological space X\mathcal X, connected covers of X\mathcal X may be classified via conjugacy classes of subgroups of the fundamental group of X\mathcal X. In this paper, we extend these results to the study of immersions into 2-dimensional CW-complexes. An immersion f:D→Cf : {\mathcal D} \rightarrow \mathcal C between CW-complexes is a cellular map such that each point y∈Dy \in {\mathcal D} has a neighborhood UU that is mapped homeomorphically onto f(U)f(U) by ff. In order to classify immersions into a 2-dimensional CW-complex C\mathcal C, we need to replace the fundamental group of C\mathcal C by an appropriate inverse monoid. We show how conjugacy classes of the closed inverse submonoids of this inverse monoid may be used to classify connected immersions into the complex

    Permanent draft genome of 'Rhodopirellula islandica' strain K833.

    The planctomycete strain K833 was isolated from cold waters at the coast of Island and is tentatively named 'Rhodopirellula islandica'. It has a lower temperature range for growth than other genome-sequenced Rhodopirellula strains affiliating to Rhodopirellula baltica and 'Rhodopirellula europaea'. The permanent draft genome of strain K833 was obtained as part of a larger study on the biogeography of Rhodopirellula species in European marine waters. The genome consists of 55 contigs with a genome size of 7,433,200 bp. With an average nucleotide identity of 81% to related genomes of R. baltica and 'R. europaea' and more than 4000 common genes, it will be a valuable source for the study of temperature adaptation of planctomycete genomes

    A Detailed Model Atmosphere Analysis of Cool White Dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We present optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of 126 cool white dwarfs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our sample includes high proper motion targets selected using the SDSS and USNO-B astrometry and a dozen previously known ultracool white dwarf candidates. Our optical spectroscopic observations demonstrate that a clean selection of large samples of cool white dwarfs in the SDSS (and the SkyMapper, Pan-STARRS, and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope datasets) is possible using a reduced proper motion diagram and a tangential velocity cut-off (depending on the proper motion accuracy) of 30 km/s. Our near-infrared observations reveal eight new stars with significant absorption. We use the optical and near-infrared photometry to perform a detailed model atmosphere analysis. More than 80% of the stars in our sample are consistent with either pure hydrogen or pure helium atmospheres. However, the eight stars with significant infrared absorption and the majority of the previously known ultracool white dwarf candidates are best explained with mixed hydrogen and helium atmosphere models. The age distribution of our sample is consistent with a Galactic disk age of 8 Gyr. A few ultracool white dwarfs may be as old as 12-13 Gyr, but our models have problems matching the spectral energy distributions of these objects. There are only two halo white dwarf candidates in our sample.     Brorfelde Schmidt CCD Catalog (BSCC)

    The Brorfelde Schmidt CCD Catalog (BSCC) contains about 13.7 million stars, north of +49 deg Declination with precise positions and V, R photometry. The catalog has been constructed from the reductions of 18,667 CCD frames observed with the Brorfelde Schmidt Telescope between 2000 and 2007. The Tycho-2 catalog was used for astrometric and photometric reference stars. Errors of individual positions are about 20 to 200 mas for stars in the R = 10 to 18 mag range. External comparisons with 2MASS and SDSS reveal possible small systematic errors in the BSCC of up to about 30 mas. The catalog is supplemented with J, H, and K_s magnitudes from the 2MASS catalog.
