Examining the Boundary-Spanning Behaviors of Community-Based Adult EducatorsAn Empirical Examination

    Get PDF
: Community-based adult educators span multiple boundaries, balancing needs of learners, groups, organizations, and institutions. This study contributes not only to the theoretical framework of boundary spanning, but also supports the practice of these adult educators in negotiating a challenging environment

Encompassing a Sense of Belonging with Youth: Art-based exploration in Urban Gardening

    Get PDF
This article showcases an arts-based project incorporating designs from youth participants in Project GROWL (Growing Real Opportunities in Work and Life). Project GROWL incorporates agricultural and environmental education with personal and professional development skills. Youth participants actively engage in an urban garden. These paintings were completed by youth and sprayed with a clear overcoat to protect them from the weather. All paintings and bee boxes were placed strategically around the urban garden to promote visual stamina for human and pollinating visitors. By creating these art pieces for the garden, youth found a deeper sense of belonging with this outdoor space. This activity also promoted by-in with youth to keep the garden safe and welcoming for all things living

Boundary Spanning Roles in Communities & Organizations: Implications for Adult Educators

    Get PDF
As adult educators, we work across communities, programs, and organizations. We serve as, work with, and build capacity of boundary spanners. Our collaborations connect people across boundaries and convince others to work together for a common goal. This manuscript explores boundary spanners in three contexts: community partners, contractors, and volunteers

Isolated bladder metastasis causing large bowel obstruction: a case report of an atypical presentation of intussusception

    Get PDF
Intussusception of the large bowel is a rare clinical entity. In adults, this pathology is usually associated with a malignant lead point and often requires operative management. Reported is the case of an 83-year-old female who was recently diagnosed with superficial bladder cancer (T1) treated by partial cystectomy. She presented 3 months post-operatively with an isolated mucosal metastasis of the transverse colon causing intussusception and large bowel obstruction. The patient was successfully treated by colonic resection with primary anastomosis. Histology was significant for a pedunculated sarcomatoid bladder carcinoma originating from the colonic mucosa with incomplete invasion of the bowel wall. An isolated mucosal metastasis of this variety has not been reported in the literature to date

The role of the elastase of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in experimental infection

The characteristic vascular lesion described in human systemic infections due to P. aeruginosa has been experimentally produced in mice infected with this microorganism. Since a prominent microscopic finding in the experimental vascular lesions is the destruction of the elastic laminae, the elastase produced by the same pathogenic strain of P. aeruginosa was assayed against elastin in vitro. The in vitro studies indicate that the enzymatic activity is near its optimum at physiologic pH and temperature, and activity is only slightly inhibited by normal human serum. Sera from patients with extensive burns, some infected with P. aeruginosa, and from `vaccinated' human subjects all contained low levels of serum elastase inhibitor similar to normal persons.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/31959/1/0000001.pd

Size Gap for Zero Temperature Black Holes in Semiclassical Gravity

    Get PDF
We show that a gap exists in the allowed sizes of all zero temperature static spherically symmetric black holes in semiclassical gravity when only conformally invariant fields are present. The result holds for both charged and uncharged black holes. By size we mean the proper area of the event horizon. The range of sizes that do not occur depends on the numbers and types of quantized fields that are present. We also derive some general properties that both zero and nonzero temperature black holes have in all classical and semiclassical metric theories of gravity.Comment: 4 pages, ReVTeX, no figure

Near Noise Field of a Jet-Engine Exhaust

    Get PDF
Aircraft structures located in the near noise field of a jet engine are subjected to extremely high fluctuating pressures that may cause structural fatigue. Studies of such structures have been limited by lack of knowledge of the loadings involved. The acoustic near field produced by the exhaust of a stationary turbojet engine having a high pressure ratio was measured for a single operating condition without burning. The maximum overall sound pressure without afterburning was found to be about 42 pounds per square foot along the jet boundary in the region immediately downstream of the jet-nozzle exit. With afterburning maximum sound pressure was increased by 50 percent. The sound pressures without afterburning were obtained on a constant percentage band width basis in the frequency range from 350 to 700 cps. Cross-correlation measurements with microphones were made for a range of jet velocities at locations along the jet and at a distance from the jet. In general, little change in the correlation curves was found as a function of jet velocity or frequency-band width
