    Long-term, multiwavelength light curves of ultra-cool dwarfs: II. The evolving light curves of the T2. 5 SIMP 0136 & the uncorrelated light curves of the M9 TVLM 513

    We present multiwavelength, multi-telescope, ground-based follow-up photometry of the white dwarf WD 1145+017, that has recently been suggested to be orbited by up to six or more, short-period, low- mass, disintegrating planetesimals. We detect 9 significant dips in flux of between 10% and 30% of the stellar flux from our ground-based photometry. We observe transits deeper than 10% on average every ∼3.6 hr in our photometry. This suggests that WD 1145+017 is indeed being orbited by multiple, short-period objects. Through fits to the multiple asymmetric transits that we observe, we confirm that the transit egress timescale is usually longer than the ingress timescale, and that the transit duration is longer than expected for a solid body at these short periods, all suggesting that these objects have cometary tails streaming behind them. The precise orbital periods of the planetesimals in this system are unclear from the transit-times, but at least one object, and likely more, have orbital periods of ∼4.5 hours. We are otherwise unable to confirm the specific periods that have been reported, bringing into question the long-term stability of these periods. Our high precision photometry also displays low amplitude variations suggesting that dusty material is consistently passing in front of the white dwarf, either from discarded material from these disintegrating planetesimals or from the detected dusty debris disk. For the significant transits we observe, we compare the transit depths in the V- and R-bands of our multiwavelength photometry, and find no significant difference; therefore, for likely compositions the radius of single-size particles in the cometary tails streaming behind the planetesimals in this system must be ∼0.15 μm or larger, or ∼0.06 μm or smaller, with 2σ confidence

    This paper examines a somewhat peripheral event in postwar transatlantic diplomacy, the 1947-48 food negotiations between Canada and the United Kingdom, because the process and the outcome of these talks illuminate the deterioration in the traditionally close relationship between the two countries. Because of the financial strains caused by British wartime expenditures, Canada was unable to negotiate a reestablishment of the prewar trade relationship, in which surpluses in her trade with Great Britain financed deficits in her accounts with the United States. The British negotiating strategy forced the Canadian government to reconsider its traditional dependence on the British connection, which had hitherto been so fundamental to Canadian history. This paper therefore challenges the view that Canadian politicians ''sold out'' the country in shifting attention from Britain to the United States after World War II.Si cette article se penche sur un événement périphérique, en quelque sorte, dans l'histoire de la diplomatie transatlantique de l'après-guerre, soit les négociations entre le Canada et la Grande-Bretagne au sujet du commerce des produits alimentaires, c'est que le processus de même que les résultats de ces rencontres mettent en lumière la détérioration des relations traditionnellement proches entre les deux pays.     mPUMA: a computational approach to microbiota analysis by de novo assembly of operational taxonomic units based on protein-coding barcode sequences.

    BACKGROUND: Formation of operational taxonomic units (OTU) is a common approach to data aggregation in microbial ecology studies based on amplification and sequencing of individual gene targets. The de novo assembly of OTU sequences has been recently demonstrated as an alternative to widely used clustering methods, providing robust information from experimental data alone, without any reliance on an external reference database. RESULTS: Here we introduce mPUMA (microbial Profiling Using Metagenomic Assembly, http://mpuma.sourceforge.net), a software package for identification and analysis of protein-coding barcode sequence data. It was developed originally for Cpn60 universal target sequences (also known as GroEL or Hsp60). Using an unattended process that is independent of external reference sequences, mPUMA forms OTUs by DNA sequence assembly and is capable of tracking OTU abundance. mPUMA processes microbial profiles both in terms of the direct DNA sequence as well as in the translated amino acid sequence for protein coding barcodes. By forming OTUs and calculating abundance through an assembly approach, mPUMA is capable of generating inputs for several popular microbiota analysis tools. Using SFF data from sequencing of a synthetic community of Cpn60 sequences derived from the human vaginal microbiome, we demonstrate that mPUMA can faithfully reconstruct all expected OTU sequences and produce compositional profiles consistent with actual community structure. CONCLUSIONS: mPUMA enables analysis of microbial communities while empowering the discovery of novel organisms through OTU assembly

    Critical care admission trends and outcomes in individuals with bronchiectasis in the UK

    Background: There are limited data on admission trends and outcomes of individuals with bronchiectasis admitted to intensive care (ICU). Using national critical care data, we analysed admissions to ICU and estimated outcomes in terms of mortality in individuals with bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admitted to ICU. Methods: Using data from the Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre, admissions from bronchiectasis and COPD from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2013 were extracted. Crude admission rates for bronchiectasis and COPD were calculated and Poisson regression was used to estimate unadjusted annual admission rate ratios. We investigated changes to length of stay on ICU, ICU mortality and in-hospital mortality during the study period. We also compared mortality rates in people with bronchiectasis and COPD aged 70 or above. Results: We found an annual increase of 8% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 2-15) in the number of ICU admissions from bronchiectasis, whilst the yearly increase in ICU admissions from COPD was 1% (95% CI 0.3-2). ICU and in-hospital mortality was higher in individuals with bronchiectasis compared with those with COPD, especially in people aged 70 years or above. Conclusion: Admission to ICU in people with bronchiectasis are uncommon, but are increasing in frequency over time, and carries a substantial mortality rate. This needs to be considered allocating health care resources and planning respiratory services

    Radii of 88 M subdwarfs and updated radius relations for low-metallicity M-dwarf stars

    M subdwarfs are low-metallicity M dwarfs that typically inhabit the halo population of the Galaxy. Metallicity controls the opacity of stellar atmospheres; in metal-poor stars, hydrostatic equilibrium is reached at a smaller radius, leading to smaller radii for a given effective temperature. We compile a sample of 88 stars that span spectral classes K7 to M6 and include stars with metallicity classes from solar-metallicity dwarf stars to the lowest metallicity ultra subdwarfs to test how metallicity changes the stellar radius. We fit models to Palomar Double Spectrograph (DBSP) optical spectra to derive effective temperatures (T_ eff) and we measure bolometric luminosities (L_ bol) by combining broad wavelength-coverage photometry with Gaia parallaxes. Radii are then computed by combining the T_ eff and L_ bol using the Stefan–Boltzman law. We find that for a given temperature, ultra subdwarfs can be as much as five times smaller than their solar-metallicity counterparts. We present color-radius and color-surface brightness relations that extend down to [Fe/H] of −2.0 dex, in order to aid the radius determination of M subdwarfs, which will be especially important for the WFIRST exoplanetary microlensing survey.Published versio

    Friends of Hot Jupiters II: No Correspondence Between Hot-Jupiter Spin-Orbit Misalignment and the Incidence of Directly Imaged Stellar Companions

    Multi-star systems are common, yet little is known about a stellar companion's influence on the formation and evolution of planetary systems. For instance, stellar companions may have facilitated the inward migration of hot Jupiters towards to their present day positions. Many observed short period gas giant planets also have orbits that are misaligned with respect to their star's spin axis, which has also been attributed to the presence of a massive outer companion on a non-coplanar orbit. We present the results of a multi-band direct imaging survey using Keck NIRC2 to measure the fraction of short period gas giant planets found in multi-star systems. Over three years, we completed a survey of 50 targets ("Friends of Hot Jupiters") with 27 targets showing some signature of multi-body interaction (misaligned or eccentric orbits) and 23 targets in a control sample (well-aligned and circular orbits). We report the masses, projected separations, and confirmed common proper motion for the 19 stellar companions found around 17 stars. Correcting for survey incompleteness, we report companion fractions of 48%±9%48\%\pm9\%, 47%±12%47\%\pm12\%, and 51%±13%51\%\pm13\% in our total, misaligned/eccentric, and control samples, respectively. This total stellar companion fraction is 2.8 σ2.8\,\sigma larger than the fraction of field stars with companions approximately 50−2000 50-2000\,AU. We observe no correlation between misaligned/eccentric hot Jupiter systems and the incidence of stellar companions.     The puzzling atmospheres of low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and exoplanets revealed by the Discovery Channel Telescope

    The Large Monolithic Imager (LMI) on the Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) enables high-precision photometry with a scriptable interface and rapid cycling between photometric bands, all while guiding off-axis. Using LMI, scientists at Boston University have undertaken a number of investigations into low-mass stars, brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets. We will report on recent results from these investigations, including (1) measurements of transiting asteroids orbiting a white dwarf, (2) refined ephemerides for long-period transiting exoplanets, (3) investigations revealing biases in space-based exoplanet light curves, (4) investigations of the nature of activity in low-mass stars and brown dwarfs and (5) investigations of low-mass eclipsing binary stars.     Shifted-windows transformers for the detection of cerebral aneurysms in microsurgery

    Purpose: Microsurgical Aneurysm Clipping Surgery (MACS) carries a high risk for intraoperative aneurysm rupture. Automated recognition of instances when the aneurysm is exposed in the surgical video would be a valuable reference point for neuronavigation, indicating phase transitioning and more importantly designating moments of high risk for rupture. This article introduces the MACS dataset containing 16 surgical videos with frame-level expert annotations and proposes a learning methodology for surgical scene understanding identifying video frames with the aneurysm present in the operating microscope’s field-of-view./ Methods: Despite the dataset imbalance (80% no presence, 20% presence) and developed without explicit annotations, we demonstrate the applicability of Transformer-based deep learning architectures (MACSSwin-T, vidMACSSwin-T) to detect the aneurysm and classify MACS frames accordingly. We evaluate the proposed models in multiple-fold cross-validation experiments with independent sets and in an unseen set of 15 images against 10 human experts (neurosurgeons)./ Results: Average (across folds) accuracy of 80.8% (range 78.5–82.4%) and 87.1% (range 85.1–91.3%) is obtained for the image- and video-level approach, respectively, demonstrating that the models effectively learn the classification task. Qualitative evaluation of the models’ class activation maps shows these to be localized on the aneurysm’s actual location. Depending on the decision threshold, MACSWin-T achieves 66.7–86.7% accuracy in the unseen images, compared to 82% of human raters, with moderate to strong correlation./ Conclusions: Proposed architectures show robust performance and with an adjusted threshold promoting detection of the underrepresented (aneurysm presence) class, comparable to human expert accuracy. Our work represents the first step towards landmark detection in MACS with the aim to inform surgical teams to attend to high-risk moments, taking precautionary measures to avoid rupturing

    Universality for orthogonal and symplectic Laguerre-type ensembles

    We give a proof of the Universality Conjecture for orthogonal (beta=1) and symplectic (beta=4) random matrix ensembles of Laguerre-type in the bulk of the spectrum as well as at the hard and soft spectral edges. Our results are stated precisely in the Introduction (Theorems 1.1, 1.4, 1.6 and Corollaries 1.2, 1.5, 1.7). They concern the appropriately rescaled kernels K_{n,beta}, correlation and cluster functions, gap probabilities and the distributions of the largest and smallest eigenvalues. Corresponding results for unitary (beta=2) Laguerre-type ensembles have been proved by the fourth author in [23]. The varying weight case at the hard spectral edge was analyzed in [13] for beta=2: In this paper we do not consider varying weights. Our proof follows closely the work of the first two authors who showed in [7], [8] analogous results for Hermite-type ensembles. As in [7], [8] we use the version of the orthogonal polynomial method presented in [25], [22] to analyze the local eigenvalue statistics.
