    TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND QUALITY IN THE ENGLISH VERSION OF NGANTING MANUK TEXT

    The aims of this study are to identify translation techniques in the English version of nganting manuk text, to elaborate reasons of applying the most dominant translation technique in the English version of nganting manuk text, and to describe the translation quality of nganting manuk text in accuracy, acceptability, and readability aspects. This descriptive qualitative research is an embedded-case study and oriented to translation product. The data consist of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in nganting manuk text, and the translation quality information from the key informants. The data are collected by document analysis, questionnaire, and analyzed by interactive data analysis technique. There are 10 translation techniques to translate nganting manuk text; borrowing, amplification, adaptation, literal, reduction, established equivalent, transposition, modulation, discursive creation, generalization, and the most dominant technique is borrowing influenced by the translator’s foreignization perspective. The translation quality is good enough; accuracy (70.4%), acceptability (63.4%), and readability (66.1%). One proposed theory is to use Cultural Information Philosophy (CPI) in the footnote to get the reader understanding the local wisdom of Karonese and the philosophy of nganting manuk text. Keywords: nganting manuk, translation technique, quality

    Translation Agency Project As A Strategy In Teaching Translation Theory

    The practice of teaching translation was often done by discussing translation theories and translating texts in the classroom. However, the problem is students also need to have a real-life experience as professional translators that will be useful for them in the future. This paper presents the findings of a research study conducted in a translation class of English Education Department students in the State Islamic University of North Sumatra. The research is about Translation Agency Project as innovation strategy to teach translation subject. The students were assigned to develop their own translation agency by promoting their agency, handling the clients, and translating the texts. The objective of this research is to identify the challenges faced by the students in running their Translation Agency Project. It also includes how students cope with those challenges. Finally, it describes the benefits of using Translation Agency Project in teaching translation. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method for translation studies (Toury, 1995) based on theoretical research compared to a survey applied to students of English Education Department who have learned about translation theories. As a result, after analyzing the data, it can be seen that the biggest challenge the students faced in conducting their translation agency is advertising the translation agency (43%), meeting with clients (36%), and translating the texts (21%). Finally, after analyzing the survey, it shows that translation Agency Project is an effective and recommended strategy to teach translation theories in the class

    INTRALINGUAL TRANSLATION: A SIMPLIFIED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL NOVEL DAVID COPPERFIELD

    The objectives of this project are to describe the intralingual translation techniques used in translating the original novel David Copperfield into a simplified version and to find out the reasons why the translator made a simplified version of the original novel David Copperfield written by Charles Dickens. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by reading the novel, comparing the original and simplified texts of David Copperfield, identifying, classifying, counting, and concluding the results. The theory of Jakobson was used to analyze the data related to intralingual translation techniques. The results of the study showed that from the total data (20 texts from the original novel David Copperfield and 20 texts from the simplified version), the paraphrasing technique was used 6 times and the summarizing technique was used 14 times. Besides, the most dominant intralingual translation technique used by the translator is the summarizing technique. The reasons why the translator used paraphrasing and summarizing techniques in making the intralingual translation of the original novel into a simplified version were also found. Firstly, the original novel consists of 750 pages, which are easier to read by making the summary of the novel into 238 pages using the summarizing technique. Secondly, the original novel consists of many difficult words, which can hinder the comprehension of the reader whereas in the simplified version the novel was paraphrased by using the paraphrasing technique.

    Translation Techniques and Translation Quality of Indonesian Subtitles of Coco Movie: A Comparative of Two Subtitlers

    The objectives of the research are to identify the types of translation technique, to evaluate the translation quality and to find out the effect of translation techniques on the translation quality used by Pein Akatsuki and Deni Aurora in Indonesian subtitles of Coco movie. This research applies descriptive qualitative method to assess data with documents and informants as source of data. The result shows that there are 16 types of translation techniques used by Pein Akatsuki and Deni Aurora in translating Indonesian subtitles. For both subtitlers, literal translation and borrowing create high level of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Modulation and the other techniques are showed in high and medium levels of accurate translation, but they result in high levels of acceptability and readability. Based on the findings, the translation techniques applied by the subtitlers contribute positively to the quality of Indonesian subtitles in terms of accuracy, acceptability, and readability

    Signs in Urban Anti-sexualism Harassment Graffities: Semiotic Analysis

    In this study, the researcher focuses mainly on the analysis of the visual and verbal signs and how the meaning of semiotic signs is realized in graffities. This study is based on library research and uses the descriptive-qualitative method to analyze the data. The data for this study is ten urban anti-sexualism harassment graffities, collected by downloading the images from the websites of Pinterest and Google. Graffiti is a form of visual communication that mostly consist of writings and drawings that have been made on public surfaces, mainly the walls. The theory for visual signs was used to analyze the data of the semiotic Triadic Model proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce, whereas the theory of Dyer was used to analyze verbal signs. The analysis revealed that visual signs mainly indicate character movement in graffiti and emotions. The verbal signs support visual signs by highlighting some aspects in graffiti to convey information about how people should be more concerned about anti-sexual harassment issues that occur in life. In addition, the analysis of this study also shows that meaningful events are created by the relationship between visual and verbal signs contained in each graffiti.
