Comparative Dating Of Attine Ant And Lepiotaceous Cultivar Phylogenies Reveals Coevolutionary Synchrony And Discord
The mutualistic symbiosis between fungus-gardening ants and their cultivars has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the coevolution of complex species interactions. Reciprocal specialization and vertical symbiont cotransmission are thought to promote a pattern of largely synchronous coevolutionary diversification in attines. Here we test this hypothesis by inferring the first time-calibrated multigene phylogeny of the lepiotaceous attine cultivars and comparing it with the recently published fossil-anchored phylogeny of the attine ants. While this comparison reveals some possible cases of synchronous origins of ant and fungal clades, there were a number of surprising asynchronies. For example, leaf-cutter cultivars appear to be significantly younger than the corresponding ant genera. Similarly, a clade of fungi interacting with primitive fungus-gardening ants-thought to be ancestral to the more derived leaf-cutter symbionts-appears instead to be a more recent acquisition from free-living stock. These macroevolutionary patterns are consistent with recent population-level studies suggesting occasional acquisition of novel cultivar types from environmental sources and horizontal transmission of cultivars between different ant species. Horizontal transmission events, even if rare, appear to form loose ecological connections between diffusely coevolving ant and fungus lineages that permit punctuated changes in the topology of the mutualistic ant-fungus interaction network.Integrative Biolog
Building Peace through Proxy-Mediation: The European Union's Mediation Support in the Libya Conflict. EIF Working Paper No. 01/2018
This paper develops the concept of EU proxy-mediation for the study EU mediation support.
EU proxy-mediation is an indirect approach to conflict mediation where the EU works
through intermediaries (proxy mediators) that are institutionally distinct from the EU foreign
policy system in pursuit of its mediation objectives. Conceptually, the paper identifies drivers
of EU proxy-mediation, strategies of proxy-mediation, and ways to manage EU-proxy
relations. Empirically, the paper demonstrates the relevance of EU proxy-mediation activities
for the case of EU mediation support in Libya. While the EU has not assumed a prominent
profile as a direct mediator in Libya, it has actively engaged in proxy-mediation activities,
providing mediation support to a variety of actors at the regional, national and local levels.
Importantly, the EU facilitated coordination among key third-party mediators; provided
financial support and training to a range of proxy mediators; and lend its own leverage to
support peace initiatives of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The EU's proxymediation
activities in Libya show that the EU can play a meaningful mediation role through
empowering others, even in situations where it does not establish itself as a direct mediator
Development of a Rigid Body Forward Solution Physiological Model of the Lower Leg to Predict Non Implanted and Implanted Knee Kinematics and Kinetics
This dissertation describes the development and results of a physiological rigid body forward solution mathematical model that can be used to predict normal knee and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) kinematics and kinetics. The simulated activities include active extension and weight-bearing deep knee bend. The model includes both the patellofemoral and tibiofemoral joints. Geometry of the normal or implanted knee is represented by multivariate polynomials and modeled by constraining the velocity of lateral and medial tibiofemoral and patellofemoral contact points in a direction normal to the geometry surface.
Center of mass, ligament and muscle attachment points and normal knee geometry were found using computer aided design (CAD) models built from computer tomography (CT) scans of a single subject. Quadriceps forces were the input for this model and were adjusted using a unique controller to control the rate of flexion, embedded with a controller which stabilizes the patellofemoral joint. The model was developed first using normal knee parameters. Once the normal knee model was validated, different total knee arthroplasty (TKA) designs were virtually implanted.
The model was validated using in vivo data obtained through fluoroscopic analysis. In vivo data of the extension and deep knee bend activities from five non-implanted knees were used to validate the normal model kinematics. In vivo kinematic and kinetic data from a telemetric TKA with a tibia component instrumented with strain gauges was used to validate the kinematic and kinetic results of the model implanted with the TKA geometry. The tibiofemoral contact movement matched the trend seen in the in vivo data from the one patient available with this implant. The maximum axial tibiofemoral force calculated with the model was in 3.1% error with the maximum force seen in the in vivo data, and the trend of the contact forces matched well. Several other TKA designs were virtually implanted and analyzed to determine kinematics and bearing surface kinetics. The comparison between the model results and those previously assessed under in vivo conditions validates the effectiveness of the model and proves that it can be used to predict the in vivo kinematic and kinetic behavior of a TKA
Age-related cognitive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and associated mental health changes in Germans
Restrictive means to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic have not only imposed broad challenges on mental health but might also affect cognitive health. Here we asked how restriction-related changes influence cognitive performance and how age, perceived loneliness, depressiveness and affectedness by restrictions contribute to these effects. 51 Germans completed three assessments of an online based study during the first lockdown in Germany (April 2020), a month later, and during the beginning of the second lockdown (November 2020). Participants completed nine online cognitive tasks of the MyBrainTraining and online questionnaires about their perceived strain and impact on lifestyle factors by the situation (affectedness), perceived loneliness, depressiveness as well as subjective cognitive performance. The results suggested a possible negative impact of depressiveness and affectedness on objective cognitive performance within the course of the lockdown. The younger the participants, the more pronounced these effects were. Loneliness and depressiveness moreover contributed to a worse evaluation of subjective cognition. In addition, especially younger individuals reported increased distress. As important educational and social input has partly been scarce during this pandemic and mental health problems have increased, future research should also assess cognitive long-term consequences
Altered differential control of sympathetic outflow following sedentary conditions: Role of subregional neuroplasticity in the RVLM
Despite the classically held belief of an “all-or-none” activation of the sympathetic nervous system, differential responses in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) can occur acutely at varying magnitudes and in opposing directions. Sympathetic nerves also appear to contribute differentially to various disease states including hypertension and heart failure. Previously we have reported that sedentary conditions enhanced responses of splanchnic SNA (SSNA) but not lumbar SNA (LSNA) to activation of the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) in rats. Bulbospinal RVLM neurons from sedentary rats also exhibit increased dendritic branching in rostral regions of the RVLM. We hypothesized that regionally specific structural neuroplasticity would manifest as enhanced SSNA but not LSNA following activation of the rostral RVLM. To test this hypothesis, groups of physically active (10–12 weeks on running wheels) or sedentary, male Sprague-Dawley rats were instrumented to record mean arterial pressure, LSNA and SSNA under Inactin anesthesia and during microinjections of glutamate (30 nl, 10 mM) into multiple sites within the RVLM. Sedentary conditions enhanced SSNA but not LSNA responses and SSNA responses were enhanced at more central and rostral sites. Results suggest that enhanced SSNA responses in rostral RVLM coincide with enhanced dendritic branching in rostral RVLM observed previously. Identifying structural and functional neuroplasticity in specific populations of RVLM neurons may help identify new treatments for cardiovascular diseases, known to be more prevalent in sedentary individuals
Open Access to Research Data: Strategic Delay and the Ambiguous Welfare Effects of Mandatory Data Disclosure
Mandatory data disclosure is an essential feature for credible empirical work but comes at a cost: First, authors might invest less in data generation if they are not the full residual claimants of their data after their first publication. Second, authors might "strategically delay" the time of submission of papers in order to fully exploit their data in subsequent research. We analyze a three-stage model of publication and data disclosure. We derive exact conditions for positive welfare effects of mandatory data disclosure. However, we find that the transition to mandatory data disclosure has negative welfare properties if authors delay strategically
Open Access to Data: An Ideal Professed but not Practised
We provide evidence for the status quo in economics with respect to data sharing using a unique data set with 488 hand-collected observations randomly taken from researchers' academic webpages. Out of the sample, 435 researchers (89.14%) neither have a data&code section nor indicate whether their data is available. We find that 8.81% of researchers share some of their data whereas only 2.05% fully share. We run an ordered probit regression to relate the decision of researchers to share to their observable characteristics. We find that three predictors are positiv and significant across specifications: being full professor, working at a higher-ranked institution and personal attitudes towards sharing as indicated by sharing other material such as lecture slides
