Escaping the Perils of Sensationalist Television Reduction

    Get PDF
Mormon polygamy has become a popular subject for contemporary reality television shows. TLC’s polygamy reality shows center around Mormon polygamist families from the families’ points of view. In contrast from these, Lifetime/A&E Networks’ Escaping Polygamy (2014–) centers around three twenty-something ex-members of a Mormon fundamentalist sect known as the Kingston group. The show depicts the ex-members as heroines who rescue other young adults as they are leaving Mormon polygamist sects. In this article, Escaping Polygamy is interpreted as an “atrocity tale” that relies on a history of moral panic around Mormon polygamy and perpetuates reductive stereotypes about Mormon fundamentalist groups. After an evaluation depending on content analysis of the series and informal interviews with key individuals represented on the series, this article explores the possible damage Escaping Polygamy causes for Mormon polygamist sects and even the young adults shown leaving the groups

New treatments are needed for brain metastasis, which is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Two novel cellular and gene therapy modalities were evaluated in xenograft models for human breast cancer. The individual and especially the combined treatments with alloreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes and replicating retroviral vectors coding for prodrug activating enzymes followed later with nontoxic prodrug demonstrated efficacy without off-target effects

Experiences of Rural Non-VA Providers in Treating Dual Care Veterans and the Development of Electronic Health Information Exchange Networks Between the Two Systems

    Get PDF
Findings are presented from two focus group discussions with rural non-VA (Veterans Administration) primary care providers to better understand their experience with treating dual care veterans, those who receive care from both VA and non-VA providers. Participants reported challenges related to a lack of communication and coordination between the VA and non-VA providers. Participants agreed that improvements must be made to the current healthcare delivery model for rural dual care veterans to support seamless care. Two case studies involving VA-supported projects currently focused on bridging the two systems through the establishment of electronic health information exchange (eHIE) networks in rural areas are discussed. Challenges encountered while developing these networks and ways these challenges have been overcome are described. Successful implementation of methods designed to facilitate communication and coordination between the VA and non-VA systems is needed to deliver seamless care to rural dual care veterans in a timely and effective manner

Biz of Acq--LibGuides: Changing the Game for Technical Services Procedures & Policies

Column describing the process of putting Technical Services procedures on LibGuides. While librarians are stereotypically excellent at preserving and ensuring access to library materials for patrons, there tends to be noticeable lack of instructions when it comes to documenting their own workflows and procedures. Librarians at Sam Houston State University’s Newton Gresham Library are trying to “change the game” when it comes to efficient and effective documentation of Technical Services department’s policies and processes. Springshare’s LibGuides has thus far been an beneficial system for documenting SHSU Library internal practices and systems. As with most technical documentation structure, continued success depends upon routine updates, maintaining access, and widespread adoption by personnel.Librar

Parallelism as Repetition: A Case Study of Betti Alver’s Elu on alles uus and JĂ€lle ja jĂ€lle / Korduse parallelism Betti Alveri luuletustes ”Elu on alles uus“ ning ”JĂ€lle ja jĂ€lle”

Abstract: The following stylistic investigation observes the repetitive and deictic influence of parallelism in two poems by Betti Alver: Elu on alles uus and JĂ€lle ja jĂ€lle. Estonian poetic language structures work in conjunction with the defamiliarization of formal and functional aspects of the artistic text. The research shows that structural patterning—parallelism—is a proponent of both poetic intuition and functional linguistic selection on all levels of language: phonological, morphological, syntactic, lexico-grammatical, and lexico-semantic.S U M M A R YKĂ€esolev artikkel kĂ€sitleb paralleelstruktuuride mudelit eesti ĂŒhe tuntuima luuletaja Betti Alveri luuletustes ”Elu on alles uus“ ning ”JĂ€lle ja jĂ€lle“.

Background: Since the implementation of competency-based medical education (CBME) across residency training programs in Canada, there has been limited research understanding how entrustable professional activity (EPA) assessments are used by faculty supervisors and residents. Objective: This study examines how EPA assessments are used in an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program and the impact of implementation on both groups. Methods: A mixed methods study design was used. Part one involved the aggregation of descriptive data of EPA assessment completion for postgraduate year 1 and 2 residents from July 2019 to May 2020. Part two involved a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews of residents and faculty. Results:  There was significant uptake of EPA assessments across community and teaching hospitals with widespread contribution of assessment data from faculty. However, both residents and faculty reported that the intended design of EPA assessments as low-stakes assessments to provide formative feedback is not how EPA assessments are experienced. Residents and faculty noted the increased level of administrative burden and related perceived stress amongst the resident group.   Conclusions: The implementation of EPA assessments is feasible across a variety of sites. However, previous measurement challenges remain. Neither residents nor faculty perceive the value of EPAs to improve feedback, despite their intended nature.
