Conformational behavior and electronic structure of silylketenes studied with quantum chemical calculations and photoelectron spectroscopy

The He(I) photoelectron spectra of silylketenes (Me3Si)2C=C=O (1), Me5Si2CH=C=O (2), Me2Si(CH=C=O)2 (3), MeSi(CH=C=O)3 (4), (SiMe2CH=C=O)2 (5), and (CH2SiMe2CH=C=O)2 (6) have been recorded and their structures and orbital energies have been calculated by ab initio methods. Orbital energies for disilanes 2 and 5 are strongly dependent on a Si-Si-C-C torsional angle due to σ–π orbital interaction. Comparisons between experimental and simulated spectra show that 2 and 5 prefer conformations in which the Si—Si bond and ketene group(s) are approximately orthogonal (113° and 111°, respectively). Silylalkenes Me5Si2CH=CH2 (7) and (SiMe2CH=CH2)2 (8), which have been included in the computational study, show the same behavior as their corresponding silylketenes. Silylbis- and trisketenes 3–6 do not exhibit π–π interaction of any significance. For Si—Si containing compounds, the best agreement between experimental and computed data was obtained when Becke3LYP/6-31G*//HF/3-21G* was employed

Carbenic nitrile imines: Properties and reactivity

Structures and properties of nitrile imines were investigated computationally at B3LYP and CCSD(T) levels. Whereas NBO analysis at the B3LYP DFT level invariably predicts a propargylic electronic structure, CCSD(T) calculations permit a clear distinction between propargylic, allenic, and carbenic structures. Nitrile imines with strong IR absorptions above ca. 2150 cm-1 have propargylic structures with a CN triple bond (RCNNSiMe 3 and R2BCNNBR2), and those with IR absorptions below ca. 2150 cm-1 are allenic (HCNNH, PhCNNH, and HCNNPh). Nitrile imines lacking significant cumulenic IR absorptions at 1900-2200 cm -1 are carbenic (R-(C:)-N=N-R′). Electronegative but lone pair-donating groups NR2, OR, and F stabilize the carbenic form of nitrile imines in the same way they stabilize "normal" singlet carbenes, including N-heterocyclic carbenes. NBO analyses at the CCSD(T) level confirm the classification into propargylic, allenic, and carbenic reactivity types. Carbenic nitrile imines are predicted to form azoketenes 21 with CO, to form [2+2] and [2+4] cycloadducts and borane adducts, and to cyclize to 1H-diazirenes of the type 24 in mildly exothermic reactions with activation energies in the range 29-38 kcal/mol. Such reactions will be readily accessible photochemically and thermally, e.g., under the conditions of matrix photolysis and flash vacuum thermolysis

Ionization potentials of nitriles — Photoelectron spectra of succinonitrile and glutaronitrile

    Get PDF
The He(I) photoelectron spectra of succinonitrile (1) and glutaronitrile (2), both with extensive overlap of ionization bands in the low-energy region, are reported. To assign ionizations, we studied the conformational behaviour and resulting ionization energy dependence of 1 and 2 computationally with the B3LYP/6-31+G(d) model chemistry based on the fact that it reliably reproduces the ionization potentials of eleven mono- and di-nitriles, both saturated and unsaturated. The correlation of proton affinities with observed ionization potentials of 1, 2, and malononitrile establishes the orbital sequence of four C≡N π orbitals followed by two nitrogen lone pair orbitals as the highest occupied molecular orbitals for all three compounds
