Not Just Mexico’s Problem: Labor Migration from Mexico to the United States (1900 – 2000)

U.S. President Barack Obama has vowed to “help countries like Mexico… do a better job of creating jobs for their people” as part of his plan to curtail undocumented immigration to the United States (Organizing for America). This idea – that the root cause of undocumented migration from Mexico to the U.S. is economic underdevelopment in Mexico – has currency in both popular and political discourse. But is it accurate? In this article, I synthesize historical, theoretical, and ethnographic scholarship to provide a transnational perspective on twentieth century labor migration from Mexico to the United States. These data show that “illegal” transmigrant labor is not an historical accident, nor merely an unfortunate side effect of legal migration, nor a result of economic underdevelopment in Mexico. Rather, undocumented transmigration is a predictable result of the confluence of three interrelated trends: neoliberal development of the Mexican and U.S. economies, the establishment of transnational social networks over time, and gross disparity between U.S. immigration policy and the realities of labor needs within global capitalism. Political rhetoric that deems unauthorized migration as “Mexico’s problem” obscures this economic interdependence, conceals the ways in which development policies have produced itinerant wage labor, and masks the complicity of U.S. policies in encouraging and sustaining undocumented labor migration. Furthermore, rhetoric that distances U.S. policy from labor migration reinforces the marginalization of some estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States

Developing bottom-up skills to attain spoken word recognition through phonics

Los participantes recibieron instrucción en cinco sonidos vocalicos /æ e ɪ ɒ ʌ/ y dos consonánticos /θ/ y /ð/ a través de lecciones estructuradas bajo los parámetros de las rutinas que desarrollan la conciencia fonémica e instrucción en “Phonics”. Otros estudios que han trabajado “phonics” se han enfocado en sus implicaciones sobre la habilidad lectora principalmente. Otros estudios se han enfocado en el uso de phonics en el aprendizaje de la lengua nativa y extranjera, sin embargo, se han dedicado a explorar sus implicaciones sobre la habilidad lectora. El presente estudio reconoce la habilidad de la escucha como la primera que abre las puertas al aprendizaje de la lengua extranjera y como la responsable de irradiar positivamente a las demás habilidades y sistemas de la lengua. Por tanto, este estudio se concentra en la habilidad de la escucha y sus resultados sugieren que la instrucción en “Phonics” es un método efectivo que ayuda a los estudiantes básicos del inglés como lengua extranjera a acceder a su forma oral ya que para el término de la implementación, la mayoría de los participantes en este estudio experimentaron una mejoría significativa en su habilidad para reconocer las palabras del inglés que escuchaban . Otros efectos de este tipo de instrucción fueron la mejora gradual de los participantes pronunciación y escritura (ortografía).

Transcontextual model application in the prediction of veteran judo athletes’ life satisfaction

Background and Study Aim: Despite recognised benefits of regular physical activity for health, the percentage of individuals linking with a physical activity practice sufficient to confer health benefits is low. The aim of current work is knowledge about effects of an extension of the motivation trans-contextual model application, specifically in the prediction of life satisfaction by veteran judo athletes. Material and Methods: It was used a sample of 99 Portuguese veteran judo athletes of both genders, aged between 30 and 76 years (M = 42.61 ±9.75), where through questionnaires were measured: basic psychological needs satisfaction, motivation, planned behaviour variables and life satisfaction. Results: The structural equations model showed that autonomy perception positively and significantly predicts autonomous motivation. In its turn it positively and significantly predicts intentions. Conclusions: Life satisfaction is positively and significantly predicted by intentions. Results authorise to emphasise the importance of fostering autonomy, since this will favour autonomous motivation, promoting a higher behavioural control over the practitioners’ intentions, thus generating a higher life satisfaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Estrategias de aprendizaje: uves heuristicas y mapas mentales para evidenciar aprendizajes en matematicas

La investigación estableció como objetivo medir el impacto de los Mapas Mentales y las UVES Heurísticas, en el incremento de las habilidades matemáticas en los estudiantes del programa de Ingeniería de Sistemas del tercer semestre de la Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia, tomándose como muestra representativa a 20 estudiantes a los cuales se les implemento un diseño cuasiexperimental de series cronológicas. Inicialmente los estudiantes dieron respuesta a una encuesta de tipo cualitativo manejado por el método de la escala Lickert, instrumento que permitió verificar las conclusiones encontradas en la prueba de hipótesis de tipo cuantitativo. Para comprobar la hipótesis de que los mapas mentales y las uves heurísticas si contribuyen a la comprensión planteo y desarrollo de los problemas matemáticos, se diseñaron una serie de pruebas que fueron aplicadas en cuatro momentos (pre-prueba y pos-prueba) conformados por dos problemas matemáticos manejados con estrategias heurísticas para los problemas de la pre-prueba; los mapas mentales para la comprensión y las Uves heurísticas para el planteo y desarrollo en la pos-prueba. La hipótesis se demostró utilizando la prueba no paramétrica de diferencias de Wilcoxon para muestras pequeñas. La prueba de hipótesis determinó que la utilización de los mapas mentales en la comprensión de los problemas matemáticos tiene una alta incidencia generando empatía y curiosidad en los estudiantes; en un grado menor, los estudiantes reconocen que las uves heurísticas si contribuyen a desarrollar habilidades para plantear un problema y finalmente darle solución

Hindsight effect: What are the actual cash flow timing skills of mutual fund investors?

This paper analyzes the cash flow timing skills of mutual fund investors, controlling for the hindsight effect (HE). We analyze a sample of US domestic equity mutual funds in the period 1990–2016. Before controlling for the HE, we find that mutual fund investors worsen the return that they achieve with their timing decisions by 1.80% annually. However, after controlling for the HE, the actual prejudice is 0.71% annually. We establish several additional controls obtaining these next results: (i) more sophisticated and informed investors show better timing skills; (ii) the HE is more relevant to less sophisticated investors; (iii) investors wrongly time their exposure to the stock market; and (iv) incubation bias does not significantly affect previous results

La economía urbana (EU) surgió de la mano de propuestas espacialistas y economicismos y continúa siendo tallada por estas A pesar de una evidente institucionalización de la economía social y solidaria (ESS) en América Latina, que da cuenta de un creciente pluralismo económico, en la EU perdura la hegemonía del enfoque del sector informal urbano y sus presiones por transformar en capitalistas cada práctica de economía popular. Buscando el reconocimiento de la economía social (ES) en este campo, el artículo ilustra brevemente la institucionalización de la ESS y plantea una provocativa exploración por poner en diálogo a la ES con la teoría de los dos circuitos. Un diálogo como este constituye una deuda pendiente que puede aportar a la disputa del campo así como a encontrar mejores comprensiones y, también, a transformar las economías de nuestros territorios en un sentido progresivo.
