    A Novel Planar Fractal Antenna with CPW-Feed for Multiband applications

    In this paper, a multiband antenna using a novel fractal design is presented. The antenna structure is formed by inscribing a hexagonal slot within a circle. This base structure is then scaled and arranged within the hexagon along its sides without touching the outer structure. The proposed CPW fed, low profile antenna offers good performance in the 1.65-2.59 GHz, 4.16-4.52 GHz and 5.54-6.42 GHz bands and is suitable for GSM 1800/1900, Bluetooth, IMT advanced system and upper WLAN applications. The antenna has been fabricated on a substrate of height 1.6mm and er=4.4 and simulation and experimental results are found to be in good agreement

    Frequency Coded Chipless RFID Tag using Spurline Resonators

    A novel compact chipless RFID tag using spurline resonators is discussed in this paper. The detection of the tag's ID is using the spectral signature of a spurline resonator circuit. The tag has a data capacity of 8-bits in the range 2.38 to 4.04 GHz. The tag consists of a spurline multiresonating circuit and two cross polarised antennas. The prototype of the tag is fabricated on a substrate C-MET/LK4.3 of dielectric constant 4.3 and loss tangent 0.0018. The measured results show that group delay response can also be used to decode the tag’s identity

    Effect of microbial biofilm in the nursery phase of mrigal, Cirrhinus mrigala

    The experiment was conducted for 35 days in nine cement tubs (1 x 1 x 1 m) having 15 cm sandy-loam soil base with three treatments in triplicate, viz., cow dung alone at the rate of 1 kg/tub (T sub(1)), cow dung at 1 kg/tub and feed at 10% body wt/d in two meals (T sub(2)), and cow dung at 1 kg and paddy straw at 200 g/tub (T sub(3)). Both manure and substrate were added on dry weight basis. All the tubs were stocked with 10 fry each mrigal (100,000/ha) of average weight of 0.09 g, seven days after the addition of manure and substrate. The total plate count of bacteria in water did not vary much between the treatments and the mean values were 5.13, 5.49 and 5.85 (CFU x 10 super(4)/ml) in T sub(1) T sub(2) and T sub(3) respectively. The number of phytoplankters and zooplankters in water differed significantly between the treatments. The average number of attached algae (no./cm³) and fish food organisms (no./cm³) recorded on the substrate were 145.28 and 70.67, respectively. The mean final weight of mrigal differed significantly (P < 0.05) between the treatments with T sub(3) registering the highest value of 6.93 g followed by T sub(2) (5.01 g) and T sub(1) (3.37 g). The specific growth rate and growth increment of fish also followed the same trend as that of weight recorded in the different treatments. Survival was higher in T sub(2) (83.33%), followed by T sub(3) (80.00%) and T sub(1) (76.67%). The study demonstrates that by the introduction of biodegradable substrates like paddy straw into the culture systems, significantly higher growth and survival can be obtained in the nursery rearing of mrigal

    Folding regulates autoprocessing of HIV-1 protease precursor

    Autoprocessing of HIV-1 protease (PR) precursors is a crucial step in the generation of the mature protease. Very little is known regarding the molecular mechanism and regulation of this important process in the viral life cycle. In this context we report here the first and complete residue level investigations on the structural and folding characteristics of the 17-kDa precursor TFR-PR-Cnn (161 residues) of HIV-1 protease. The precursor shows autoprocessing activity indicating that the solution has a certain population of the folded active dimer. Removal of the 5-residue extension, Cnn at the C-terminal of PR enhanced the activity to some extent. However, NMR structural characterization of the precursor containing a mutation, D25N in the PR at pH 5.2 and 32 &#176;C under different conditions of partial and complete denaturation by urea, indicate that the precursor has a high tendency to be unfolded. The major population in the ensemble displays some weak folding propensities in both the TFR and the PR regions, and many of these in the PR region are the non-native type. As both D25N mutant and wild-type PR are known to fold efficiently to the same native dimeric form, we infer that TFR cleavage enables removal of the non-native type of preferences in the PR domain to cause constructive folding of the protein. These results indicate that intrinsic structural and folding preferences in the precursor would have important regulatory roles in the autoprocessing reaction and generation of the mature enzyme

    Assessment of intelligence quotient among schoolchildren of fishermen community of Kutch, Gujarat, India

    Background and aim: The aim of the study was to assess the intelligence quotient of fishermen school children of Kutch, Gujarat, India.Materials and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 8 to 10 years old school children living in Kutch District, Gujarat, India, from January to February 2013. Seguin Form Board Test was used to assess the intelligence quotient (IQ) level of children. Means of groups were compared by independent student t-test. Stepwise multiple linear regression was used to identify predictors for IQ.Results: The mean average timing taken by fishermen school children to complete the test was 30.64 ± 4.97. Males had significantly lower mean timing scores than females (p &lt; 0.05). Participants with severe dental fluorosis, low socio-economic status (SES), lower education level of both mother and father and those who were overweight had significantly higher mean timing scores for average category.Conclusions: The present study suggested a low IQ among fishermen school children community of Kutch, Gujarat, India. The major factors which influenced their IQ were dental fluorosis, low SES, low education level of parents and high body mass index

    Background: To assess the effectiveness of oral health education on oral health knowledge, attitude, practices and oral hygiene status among 12–15-year-old school children of fishermen of Kutch district, Gujarat, India.Materials and methods: A before-and-after experimental study was conducted among all (n = 205) the 12–15-year-old children from two schools of Bhadreshwar village of Mundra taluka of Kutch district, Gujarat, India from January 2013 to December 2013. At baseline, children were assessed for oral health knowledge, attitude and practices using a self-administered structured questionnaire and oral hygiene was assessed using Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S). Oral health education was provided after baseline assessment, at 3 months and at 6 months. Follow up study was done after 1 year from baseline. Statistical tests applied were Independent t test, paired t test and McNemar test. Level of significance and confidence level were set at 5% and 95%, respectively.Results: Mean OHI-S scores reduced significantly at 1 year follow up interval. All the questions showed statistically significant improvement in knowledge, attitude and practices except the frequency of change of tooth brush which showed no improvement.Conclusions: The results of the study reflects the accomplishment of upgrading oral health knowledge, attitude, practices and oral hygiene status of fishermen children through school oral health education programme. Organizing oral health education in high school children of fishermen community could lead to improvement in students’ oral hygiene to ultimately enhance their oral health

    Novel Face-Name Paired Associate Learning and Famous Face Recognition in Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Neuropsychological and Brain Volumetric Study

    Purpose: To assess visual associative learning and famous face recognition ability among subjects with stable amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI) relative to early stage dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cognitively normal healthy controls (NC) and to correlate these differences with volumetric changes on MRI. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 61 participants. The subjects underwent neuropsychological evaluation, including validated newly designed tests for novel face-name paired association learning recall and famous face recognition. MRI volumetry was done on a subset of patients to ascertain the topographical patterns of volume loss. Results: There were significant differences in performance on free recall for face-name paired associate learning in MCI (n = 22) compared to NC (n = 20) (p &#x3c; 0.001) and MCI compared to AD (n = 19; p &#x3c; 0.001). Significant differences were also noted in scores on the famous personalities test between MCI and NC (p = 0.007), and MCI and AD (p = 0.032). The free recall component of face-name pair associative learning significantly correlated with left cuneus (p = 0.005; r = 0.833) and right cuneus (p = 0.003; r = 0.861) volume in AD with no significant correlation among MCI and NC cohorts. Conclusions: Novel and semantically familiar face-name associative recalls are significantly impaired in MCI, and these potentially predate the MRI volumetric changes in MCI. Our findings expand the spectrum of recall deficits in MCI

    Dementia with Lewy bodies research consortia: A global perspective from the ISTAART Lewy Body Dementias Professional Interest Area working group

    Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) research has seen a significant growth in international collaboration over the last three decades. However, researchers face a challenge in identifying large and diverse samples capable of powering longitudinal studies and clinical trials. The DLB research community has begun to focus efforts on supporting the development and harmonization of consortia, while also continuing to forge networks within which data and findings can be shared. This article describes the current state of DLB research collaborations on each continent. We discuss several established DLB cohorts, many of whom have adopted a common framework, and identify emerging collaborative initiatives that hold the potential to expand DLB networks and diversify research cohorts. Our findings identify geographical areas into which the global DLB networks should seek to expand, and we propose strategies, such as the creation of data-sharing platforms and the harmonization of protocols, which may further potentiate international collaboration.publishedVersio
