Contributos para o estudo da biblioteca particular de José do Canto

Dissertação de Mestrado, Tradução e Assessoria Linguística, 23 de Maio de 2016, Universidade dos Açores.O presente trabalho tem como principal objetivo o conhecimento das influências culturais que marcaram a sociedade açoriana do século XIX, através do estudo da coleção bibliográfica de José do Canto, com especial enfoque nas obras em língua estrangeira e obras traduzidas. O estudo terá como ponto de partida os fundamentos teóricos dos Estudos da Tradução preconizados por Susan Bassnett, que coloca a tónica numa abordagem cultural da tradução em detrimento de uma abordagem focalizada em aspetos linguísticos. No caso em análise, será observado um período crucial para o desenvolvimento de São Miguel, correspondendo à segunda metade do século XIX. As obras selecionadas servirão de ponto de partida para se conhecer o papel da tradução para satisfazer o desejo de conhecimento e aferir o papel das influências estrangeiras que terão marcado a figura de José do Canto e as preocupações da sua época. Ao mesmo tempo, procurar-se-á compreender o grau de consciência que os tradutores tinham das especificidades da sua atividade e divulgar o ainda pouco conhecido património cultural de José do Canto, espelhado na sua vasta biblioteca particular.ABSTRACT: The following work is primarily focused on the knowledge of the cultural influences that shaped the Azorean society in the 19th century, through the study of the personal book collection that belonged to José do Canto, with special emphasis on foreign language books and translated books. The study takes as its starting point the theoretical principles of Translation Studies defended by Susan Bassnett, which bring attention to a cultural approach rather than a linguistic-based approach. In this particular case, it will focus on the second half of the 19th century, a crucial period for the development of São Miguel Island. The selected works will provide the textual body both to assess how translation participated in fulfilling the desire for knowledge and to understand to what extent foreign influences marked José Canto and his time. Furthermore, this study intends to perceive the degree of awareness of translators regarding the specific nature of their activity and to contribute to the dissemination of the almost unknown cultural heritage of José do Canto that is reflected in his vast personal book collection

Places of fear and attachment. How Azoreans perceive seismic and volcanic risk.

In spite of the knowledge already gathered by local historians and earth sciences researchers, there are no scientific data on the socio- cultural dimensions of volcanic and seismic risks. A research project on risk perception of natural hazards (TOPOI METUS) is now being carried out in order to study the social cosmographies of seismic and volcanic hazard. Based on data produced along fourteen in-depth extensive interviews conducted in five of the nine islands of the archipelago, this presentation focuses on preliminary findings of perceptions regarding seismic and volcanic risk profiles, patrimonial and economic vulnerability to those risks, and risk management (i.e. information and actions taken before a crisis, and during the response and recovery phases of a disaster situation). Exploratory results show that people living in the most vulnerable areas insist in staying there, even when they are aware of the dangerousness involved in it. To uncover the apparently irrational reasons beneath these options will allow understanding some of the barriers encountered by risk managers engaged in the minimization of destructive impacts of those natural hazards. Knowing that people both 'put themselves in the Hands of God' and highly identify with the patrimonial history of their living place may help to develop knowledge to more fully inform civil protection/defence policies. Results may also allow reconceptualising the variable "identification with the local" in the scope of risk perception

Adesão das pessoas com diabetes tipo 1 às atividades de autocuidado

Objective: to assess the adherence of people with type 1 diabetes to self-care activities. Method: quantitative study with 60 diabetics, from Porto, Portugal. The Self-Care Scale for Diabetes in its version translated and adapted to Portuguese was applied in January to February 2019. Results: respondents are mostly young (36.7%), employed (63.4%), female (73.3%), married (36.7%), high educated (60.0%) and diagnosed with recent diabetes (50.0%). Most have good mean adherence to self-care behaviors related to food (5.0), blood glucose monitoring (6.8), foot care (5.6) and medication (6.4). Regarding physical activity (2.6) and smoking, 73.3% of respondents say they smoked a cigarette in the last seven days lower adherence was identified. Invasão, Expulsão e Sucessão: Notas sobre Três Processos Sociais no Campo

O cercamento dos campos é, sem dúvida, o capítulo mais tenso da gestação do capitalismo na Inglaterra (2). Envolvendo a questão da propriedade privada da teria, não é sem razão que quaisquer outras situações concretas que envolvam ingredientes semelhantes se constituam em pretexto para análise. Neste sentido, abordar a questão do “ cercamento” não permite ver em tal pretexto uma predileção pela comparação com “ o mais clássico dos casos” , descartando ou suprimindo a questão da fronteira em movimento como elemento fértil para a compreensão do que ocorre no campo brasileiro. Cercamento e fronteira são, antes, faces de uma mesma moeda. Tratar-se-á sempre de buscar as faces de uma moeda nacional: o campo brasileiro hoje, com suas características próprias
