    Hyperbolic Bridged Graphs

    Get PDF
AbstractGiven a connected graph G, we take, as usual, the distance xy between any two verticesx , y of G to be the length of some geodesic between x and y. The graph G is said to be δ - hyperbolic, for some δ≥ 0, if for all vertices x,y , u, v in G the inequality xy+uv ≤max{ xu+ yv,xv + yu } + δholds, and G isbridged if it contains no finite isometric cycles of length four or more. In this paper, we will show that a finite connected bridged graph is 1-hyperbolic if and only if it does not contain any of a list of six graphs as an isometric subgraph

The economics of public assistance for private nonindustrial timber sales in Mississippi

The U.S. South has many forestry advantages, yet public and private efforts are increasingly needed to encourage reforestation and active forest management in the region. The review draft of The South\u27s Fourth Forest, Alternatives for the Future (USDA Forest Service 1987a) highlights the urgent need for increased efforts to ensure future timber availability: ... projections of resource change mean that the South is facing a future of rising stumpage and roundwood product prices, much lower rates of growth in timber harvests, and declines in employment in the forest industries (p. xxxv). The report also highlights great opportunities to increase forest productivity in the South, and to sustain continued growth in forestry employment and income-growth that will no.t occur without continued public assistance directed to the present and future forestry needs in the region. Public assistance for forestry includes fire protection, research and information transfer, reforestation incentives, and other direct and indirect programs to assist public and private timber producers and wood products manufacturers and consumers. Forestry assistance programs are funded by local, state, and federal agencies. In recent years, continued funding for some programs has been questioned

Direct and Indirect Influence of Mining Related Subsidence on Structural Damages - a Case Study

    Get PDF
An investigation of causes of damages to a structure located at a toe of a hillside over an undermined area is described. The investigation included a finite element analysis and an analysis of landslide susceptibility of the hillside. Direct and Indirect influence of mining activity appears to be the cause of structural damages

Of Prosecutors and Special Prosecutors: An Organizational Perspective

The Independent Counsel (IC) statute, designed to restore public trust in the impartial administration of criminal justice after Watergate, ultimately fueled rather than quieted the perception that partisan politics drives the investigation of high-ranking government officials. Congress, in an inspiring display of bipartisanship, bid it a muted farewell. The statute\u27s fate was sealed by the enormous controversy surrounding the investigation conducted by Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr. Although Start did not bring criminal charges against President Clinton, his office went pretty far in that direction, committing considerable enforcement resources to that end, bringing criminal charges against people believed to have information that would implicate Clinton, and deploying arguments of prosecutorial prerogative that have significantly changed the legal landscape. Like many others, we have found this exercise of prosecutorial power terribly troubling. Also troubling, however, is the difficulty we (and others) have had in identifying neutral principles of prosecutorial discretion that Starr violated. The standard criticisms of Starr\u27s investigation do not meet that measure. The standard criticisms of the IC mechanism generally, though possessing greater force, are similarly unsatisfying. This essay, written from the perspective of two former federal prosecutors, springs from our effort to identify the fundamental shortcomings of the IC concept, particularly as manifested in the Starr investigation, and to decide whether efforts to cure those shortcomings with a new and improved version of the IC approach are warranted

HKSC Field Guide for Developing a Healthcare Knowledge Services Center

Knowledge is the foundation of our work as librarians; however, because it is intangible, we work directly with assets that result from knowledge. Content, people, and technology are the core knowledge assets. Knowledge assets are referenced throughout the HKSC Field Guide where we define a path to delivering knowledge services. Delivering the best content is achieved through the innovation and competencies of library professionals who leverage technologies to benefit their constituents. The result is excellent knowledge services. This field guide is organized in chapters that are aligned with modules of the HKSC Model Template. The HKSC Field Guide is laid out in a linear progression of activities, with simple commentary to encourage the reader’s thinking toward eventual outcomes and changes that are required to make a transition from a library setting to a Healthcare Knowledge Services Center (HKSC) operation. It is expected that the successful manager will make several passes through the entire guide, gaining a better understanding of all the pieces that must be in place for a strategic and successful plan. Each module/chapter provides descriptions to explain the module theme and to share ideas on how to proceed with the process. Following descriptions and guidance is a worksheet for taking notes and a checklist of tasks. The intent of each worksheet is to focus on a specific data collection, a strategic planning activity, and/or to note details describing required resources. Chapters conclude with a checklist for you to sign off on for tasks considered and/or completed. Some forms may not be completed until multiple passes have been made through the guide; managers are encouraged to refine and hone activities in fine-tuning their work. A separate document (in MS Word format) supplies both worksheets and checklists for you to edit electronically –or- to create separate editable documents in modular fashion
