Au+Au Reactions at the AGS: Experiments E866 and E917
Particle production and correlation functions from Au+Au reactions have been
measured as a function of both beam energy (2-10.7AGeV) and impact parameter.
These results are used to probe the dynamics of heavy-ion reactions, confront
hadronic models over a wide range of conditions and to search for the onset of

Semi-Inclusive Lambda and Kshort Production in p-Au Collisions at 17.5 GeV/c
The first detailed measurements of the centrality dependence of strangeness
production in p-A collisions are presented. Lambda and Kshort dn/dy
distributions from 17.5 GeV/c p-Au collisions are shown as a function of "grey"
track multiplicity and the estimated number of collisions, nu, made by the
proton. The nu dependence of the Lambda yield deviates from a scaling of p-p
data by the number of participants, increasing faster than this scaling for
nu<=5 and saturating for larger nu. A slower growth in Kshort multiplicity with
nu is observed, consistent with a weaker nu dependence of K-Kbar production

Antiproton Production in Collisions at AGS Energies
Inclusive and semi-inclusive measurements are presented for antiproton
() production in proton-nucleus collisions at the AGS. The inclusive
yields per event increase strongly with increasing beam energy and decrease
slightly with increasing target mass. The yield in 17.5 GeV/c p+Au
collisions decreases with grey track multiplicity, , for ,
consistent with annihilation within the target nucleus. The relationship
between and the number of scatterings of the proton in the nucleus is
used to estimate the annihilation cross section in the nuclear
medium. The resulting cross section is at least a factor of five smaller than
the free annihilation cross section when assuming a small or
negligible formation time. Only with a long formation time can the data be
described with the free annihilation cross section.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure
Low and High Expressing Alleles of the LMNA Gene: Implications for Laminopathy Disease Development
Today, there are at least a dozen different genetic disorders caused by mutations within the LMNA gene, and collectively, they are named laminopathies. Interestingly, the same mutation can cause phenotypes with different severities or even different disorders and might, in some cases, be asymptomatic. We hypothesized that one possible contributing mechanism for this phenotypic variability could be the existence of high and low expressing alleles in the LMNA locus. To investigate this hypothesis, we developed an allele-specific absolute quantification method for lamin A and lamin C transcripts using the polymorphic rs4641C/T LMNA coding SNP. The contribution of each allele to the total transcript level was investigated in nine informative human primary dermal fibroblast cultures from Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) and unaffected controls. Our results show differential expression of the two alleles. The C allele is more frequently expressed and accounts for ∼70% of the lamin A and lamin C transcripts. Analysis of samples from six patients with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome showed that the c.1824C>T, p.G608G mutation is located in both the C and the T allele, which might account for the variability in phenotype seen among HGPS patients. Our method should be useful for further studies of human samples with mutations in the LMNA gene and to increase the understanding of the link between genotype and phenotype in laminopathies
Precision Measurement of KS Meson Lifetime with the KLOE detector
Using a large sample of pure, slow, short lived K0 mesons collected with KLOE
detector at DaFne, we have measured the KS lifetime. From a fit to the proper
time distribution we find tau = (89.562 +- 0.029_stat +- 0.043_syst) ps. This
is the most precise measurement today in good agreement with the world average
derived from previous measurements. We observe no dependence of the lifetime on
the direction of the Ks.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figure
Physics beyond colliders at CERN:Beyond the Standard Model Working Group Report
The Physics Beyond Colliders initiative is an exploratory study aimed at exploiting the full scientific potential of the CERN's accelerator complex and scientific infrastructures through projects complementary to the LHC and other possible future colliders. These projects will target fundamental physics questions in modern particle physics. This document presents the status of the proposals presented in the framework of the Beyond Standard Model physics working group, and explore their physics reach and the impact that CERN could have in the next 10-20 years on the international landscape.</p
