    MOXE: An X-ray all-sky monitor for Soviet Spectrum-X-Gamma Mission

    A Monitoring Monitoring X-Ray Equipment (MOXE) is being developed for the Soviet Spectrum-X-Gamma Mission. MOXE is an X-ray all-sky monitor based on array of pinhole cameras, to be provided via a collaboration between Goddard Space Flight Center and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The objectives are to alert other observers on Spectrum-X-Gamma and other platforms of interesting transient activity, and to synoptically monitor the X-ray sky and study long-term changes in X-ray binaries. MOXE will be sensitive to sources as faint as 2 milliCrab (5 sigma) in 1 day, and cover the 2 to 20 KeV band

    Radioactivities induced in some LDEF samples

    Radioactivities induced in several Long Duration Exposure Facilities (LDEF) samples were measured by low-level counting at Los Alamos and elsewhere. These radionuclides have activities similar to those observed in meteorites and lunar samples. Some trends were observed in these measurements in terms of profiles in trunnion layers and as a function of radionuclide half-life. Several existing computer codes were used to model the production by the protons trapped in the Earth's radiation belts and by the galactic cosmic rays of some of these radionuclides, Mn-54 and Co-57 in steel, Sc-46 in titanium, and Na-22 in alloys of titanium and aluminum. Production rates were also calculated for radionuclides possibly implanted in LDEF, Be-7, Be-10, and C-14. Enhanced concentrations of induced isotopes in the surfaces of trunnion sections relative to their concentrations in the center are caused by the lower-energy protons in the trapped radiation. Secondary neutrons made by high-energy trapped protons and by galactic cosmic rays produce much of the observed radioactivities, especially deep in an object. Comparisons of the observed to calculated activities of several radionuclides with different half-lives indicate that the flux of trapped protons at LDEF decreased significantly at the end of the mission

    Quasinormal mode spectra for gravitational perturbations of black holes in four dimensional de Sitter and anti-de Sitter space are investigated. The anti-de Sitter case is relevant to the ADS-CFT correspondence in superstring theory.     Endocytosis Occurs Independently Of Annexin-Vi In Human A431 Cells

    Annexin VI is one of a family of calcium-dependent phospholipid-binding proteins. Although the function of this protein is not known, various physiological roles have been proposed, including a role in the budding of clathrin-coated pits (Lin et al., 1992. Cell. 70:283-291.). In this study we have investigated a possible endocytotic role for annexin VI in intact cells, using the human squamous carcinoma cell line A431, and report that these cells do not express endogenous annexin VI, as judged by Western and Northern blotting and PCR/Southern blotting. To examine whether endocytosis might in some way be either facilitated or inhibited by the presence of annexin VI, a series of A431 clones were isolated in which annexin VI expression was achieved by stable transfection. These cells expressed annexin VI at similar levels to other human cell types. Using assays for endocytosis and recycling of the transferrin receptor, we report that each of these cellular processes occurs with identical kinetics in both transfected and wild-type A431 cells. In addition, purified annexin VI failed to support the scission of coated pits in permeabilized A431 cells. We conclude that annexin VI is not an essential component of the endocytic pathway, and that in A431 cells, annexin VI fails to exert any influence on internalization and recycling of the transferrin receptor

    Shape of the Galactic Orbits in the CNOC1 Clusters

    We present an analysis of the orbital properties in 9 intermediate-redshifts cluster of the CNOC1 survey and we compare them to a control sample of 12 nearby clusters. Similar to the nearby elliptical galaxies, the bulge-dominated galaxies in clusters at redshifts ~0.1-0.4 present orbits that are more eccentric than those for disk-dominated galaxies. However, the orbital segregation is less significant than that found for elliptical and spiral galaxies in nearby cluster. When galaxies are separated by colors - red galaxies with colors in the rest frame (U-V)_o > 1.4, and blue galaxies with (U-V)_o =< 1.4 - the strongest orbital segregation is found. Therefore, the segregation we found seems to modify more efficiently the star formation activity than the internal shape of the galaxies. When we compare the orbits of early-type galaxies at intermediate-redshift with those for z=0, they seem to develop significant changes getting much more eccentric. A different behavior is observed in the late-type galaxies, which present no-significant evolution in their orbit shapes.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, April 2000.     Neutrino quasinormal modes of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole

    The neutrino quasinormal modes of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om (RN) black hole are investigated using continued fraction approach. We find, for large angular quantum number, that the quasinormal frequencies become evenly spaced and the spacing of the real part depends on the charge of the black hole and that of the imaginary part is zero. We then find that the quasinormal frequencies in the complex ω\omega plane move counterclockwise as the charge increases. They get a spiral-like shape, moving out of their Schwarzschild value and ``looping in" towards some limiting frequency as the charge tends to the extremal value. The number of the spirals increases as the overtone number increases but it decreases as the angular quantum number increases. We also find that both the real and imaginary parts are oscillatory functions of the charge, and the oscillation becomes faster as the overtone number increases but it becomes slower as the angular quantum number increases.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
