    The Effects of School Belonging and Peer Influences on the Achievement of High School Immigrant Students

    This study examines the effect of race/ethnicity, immigrant status and the role of school belonging on the academic achievement of Mexican, Filipino, and white students. We focus on school belonging and peer influences in concert with immigrant generational status and family income to predict students’ academic achievement at the end of 9th grade. Using data from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09), we examine the effects of school belonging as well as other student and school context factors for immigrant and non-immigrant students in secondary schools. Our findings show that school belonging is a statistically significant predictor of academic achievement, and this relationship differs for second-generation immigrant Filipino and Mexican-origin students. Our results indicate that establishing school environments that foster a strong sense of school belonging can help mitigate the academic disparities associated with students’ ethnic background, immigrant generational status, and family socioeconomic status (SES) on their academic achievement

    Electrochemical study of H3PMo12 retention on Vulcan carbon grafted with NH2 and OH groups

    In this work, we show a comparative study based on the effects of specific chemical functional groups (–OH, –NH2), grafted on Vulcan carbon (VC) with the incorporation of a specific polyoxometalate (POM), PMo12 (H3PMo12O40), to improve electrochemical performance. We observed a decrease in the specific surface area of the grafted matrices (VC-OH and VC-NH2) [1], and the same trend was observed for PMo12 (POM) incorporation. Our electrochemical studies showed low concentrations of POM in unmodified VCs and higher POM concentrations for grafted matrices (VC-OH and VC-NH2) after 500 voltammetric cycles, especially for the VC grafted with –OH groups (VC-OH-POM). Mechanisms have been proposed for POM interaction with the grafted groups in carbon, emphasizing the role of aqueous medium and redox activity of POM. Cyclic voltammograms suggested the POM anchoring through –OH groups with a strong interaction as a covalent bond, resulting in a surface coverage of 1.66 × 10−11 mol cm−2. Surface modifications could be extrapolated to other carbons, and the materials could be employed for different potential applications such as photocatalysis, amperometric sensors, fuel cells, and supercapacitors.Fil: Cuentas Gallegos, Ana Karina.     Validation and field evaluation of a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for diagnosis of Babesia bovis infections in Argentina

    Infections by Babesia bovis limit cattle production and cause important economic losses in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. Monitoring of calf sera can be used to detect unprotected cattle herds and to decide on strategic control measures, as well as for epidemiological studies. Merozoite surface antigen 2c (MSA-2c) is an immunodominant surface protein expressed in B. bovis merozoites and sporozoites and contains B-cell epitopes that are conserved among geographic isolates. A monoclonal antibody against recombinant MSA-2c (rMSA-2c) was previously shown to inhibit the binding of anti-B. bovis antibodies to a parasite B-cell epitope in a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) format. In the work at hand, the parameters of this cELISA were reevaluated and adjusted when necessary, and a cutoff value was determined by receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis of a total of 357 bovine sera of known reactivity, as assessed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFAT). The established rMSA-2c cELISA demonstrated a specificity of 98% and a sensitivity of 96.2%. An additional set of 303 field bovine sera from regions where ticks are endemic and tick-free regions of Argentina was tested by both rMSA-2c cELISA and IFAT, and the results were shown to be in very good agreement (kappa index, 0.8325). The performance shown by rMSA-2c cELISA in the detection of B. bovis-specific antibodies and its suitability for standardization and large-scale production, as well as the possibility of its application in most veterinary diagnostic laboratories, make the assay a powerful tool for the surveillance of herd immunity as a strategic measure for the control of bovine babesiosis.Fil: Dominguez, Mariana Gabriela.     Uso del lenguaje VHDL como apoyo a la enseñanza de arquitectura de computadoras

    En el Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Irapuato se imparte la carrera de Ingeniería en Sistemas Computacionales, dentro del programa de estudio se incluye la materia de Arquitectura de Computadoras. La cantidad de temas a cubrir dentro de la materia están acotados a un periodo de tiempo e incluso  la complejidad de los temas dificulta el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje por lo que se necesita un apoyo didáctico que permita cubrir los temas en forma teórico-práctica.Este trabajo tiene como objetivo plantear el uso del lenguaje de descripción de circuitos VHDL como apoyo a la enseñanza de esta materia. La aportación de este trabajo consiste en describir los circuitos digitales siguiendo la secuencia didáctica de un libro de texto de Arquitectura de Computadoras pero empleando una sola librería estándar del lenguaje y un solo paquete básico de la librería ya que se  describen los componentes digitales más complejos a partir de los componentes básicos que los conforman. Se verifica el grado de avance que se puede tener en los temas de un curso empleando ésta técnica ya que se realiza la descripción de circuitos digitales básicos hasta la descripción de la interconexión de componentes de un procesador de 16 bits.Palabra(s) Clave(s): arquitectura de computadoras, FPGA, VHDL

    Malignant nerve sheath tumor involving glossopharyngeal, vagus and spinal nerve with intracranial-extracranial extension and systemic metastases in a patient with type 1 neurofibromatosis: A case report

    AbstractIntroductionIntracranial malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are an extremely rare pathology with a high morbidity and mortality. Epidemiological, clinical and prognostic data are scarce and with little certainty in the literature. The aim of this paper is to report for first time in English literature, the case of a patient with type 1 neurofibromatosis, who presented a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor that involved the left glossopharyngeal, vagus and spinal nerves with intracranial and extracranial extension through jugular foramen and systemic metastases.Presentation of caseA 37 years-old female patient with malnutrition and Villaret́s syndrome. It was confirmed by brain magnetic resonance imaging and PET-CT the presence of a neoplasic lesion which was radiologically compatible with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor with systemic metastases. Partial surgical resection was performed; the patient postoperative course was without significant clinical improvement but with added peripheral facial palsy. The patient did not accept adjuvant management because of personal reasons.Discussion and conclusionBehavior therapy is unclear due to the low frequency of the disease and the lack of case series, representing a challenge for the physician in its approach and a poor prognosis for the patient

    Assessment of CD-105 as an angiogenic modulator in odontogenic myxomas and dental follicles

    Aim. Odontogenic myxoma is a benign intraosseous neoplasm of the jaws, with a locally aggressive behavior and a high recurrence rate. CD-105 is a homodimeric cell membrane glycoprotein and is a component of the TGF-β1 growth factor receptor complex that modulates angiogenesis by regulating the proliferation, differentiation and cellular migration. The aim of this study is to quantify the microvascular density of the odontogenic myxoma based on the expression of CD-105. Materials and Methods. The analysis included 18 odontogenic myxoma and 18 dental follicles as controls. A standard immunohistochemical procedure was performed with the CD-105 antibody. Five representative fields (40×) of the odontogenic myxoma and the dental follicles were selected to determine the microvascular density, which was then followed by a descriptive and comparative statistical analysis. Results. Dental follicles presented a significantly higher microvascular density compared with odontogenic myxoma (P = .001). The odontogenic myxoma smaller than 3 cm showed a greater microvascular density than those larger than 3 cm in size (P > .05), and the microvascular density was lower in large odontogenic myxomas as compared with the dental follicles (P = .003). Conclusion. A weaker expression of CD-105 in odontogenic myxoma might indicate a lower angiogenic activity, suggesting that vascular proliferation has a limited role in the growth mechanisms and in the aggressive behavior of this neoplasm.Aim.     Epidermal growth factor enhances osteogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells in vitro

    Introduction: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) play an important role in extracellular matrix mineralization, a complex process required for proper bone regeneration, one of the biggest challenges in dentistry. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the osteogenic potential of EGF and bFGF on dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). Material and methods: Human DPSCs were isolated using CD105 magnetic microbeads and characterized by flow cytometry. To induce osteoblast differentiation, the cells were cultured in osteogenic medium supplemented with EGF or bFGF at a low concentration. Cell morphology and expression of CD146 and CD10 surface markers were analyzed using fluorescence microscopy. To measure mineralization, an alizarin red S assay was performed and typical markers of osteoblastic phenotype were evaluated by RT-PCR. Results: EGF treatment induced morphological changes and suppression of CD146 and CD10 markers. Additionally, the cells were capable of producing calcium deposits and increasing the mRNA expression to alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and osteocalcin (OCN) in relation to control groups (p < 0.001). However, bFGF treatment showed an inhibitory effect. Conclusion: These data suggests that DPSCs in combination with EGF could be an effective stem cell-based therapy for bone tissue engineering applications in periodontics and oral implantology
