Spin chain from membrane and the Neumann-Rosochatius integrable system
We find membrane configurations in AdS_4 x S^7, which correspond to the
continuous limit of the SU(2) integrable spin chain, considered as a limit of
the SU(3) spin chain, arising in N=4 SYM in four dimensions, dual to strings in
AdS_5 x S^5. We also discuss the relationship with the Neumann-Rosochatius
integrable system at the level of Lagrangians, comparing the string and
membrane cases.Comment: LaTeX, 16 pages, no figures; v2: 17 pages, title changed,

Geodesic Flow on the Normal Congruence of a Minimal Surface
We study the geodesic flow on the normal line congruence of a minimal surface
in induced by the neutral K\"ahler metric on the space of
oriented lines. The metric is lorentz with isolated degenerate points and the
flow is shown to be completely integrable. In addition, we give a new
holomorphic description of minimal surfaces in and relate it to
the classical Weierstrass representation.Comment: AMS-LATEX 8 pages 2, figure
Hyperbolic outer billiards : a first example
We present the first example of a hyperbolic outer billiard. More precisely
we construct a one parameter family of examples which in some sense correspond
to the Bunimovich billiards.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Nonlinearit
Conservation laws in the continuum systems
We study the conservation laws of both the classical and the quantum
mechanical continuum type systems. For the classical case, we introduce
new integrals of motion along the recent ideas of Shastry and Sutherland (SS),
supplementing the usual integrals of motion constructed much earlier by Moser.
We show by explicit construction that one set of integrals can be related
algebraically to the other. The difference of these two sets of integrals then
gives rise to yet another complete set of integrals of motion. For the quantum
case, we first need to resum the integrals proposed by Calogero, Marchioro and
Ragnisco. We give a diagrammatic construction scheme for these new integrals,
which are the quantum analogues of the classical traces. Again we show that
there is a relationship between these new integrals and the quantum integrals
of SS by explicit construction.Comment: 19 RevTeX 3.0 pages with 2 PS-figures include
Quantum integrability of quadratic Killing tensors
Quantum integrability of classical integrable systems given by quadratic
Killing tensors on curved configuration spaces is investigated. It is proven
that, using a "minimal" quantization scheme, quantum integrability is insured
for a large class of classic examples.Comment: LaTeX 2e, no figure, 35 p., references added, minor modifications. To

Repression of GW/P body components and the RNAi microprocessor impacts primary ciliogenesis in human astrocytes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In most cells, the centriolar component of the centrosome can function as a basal body supporting the formation of a primary cilium, a non-motile sensory organelle that monitors information from the extracellular matrix and relays stimuli into the cell via associated signaling pathways. Defects in the formation and function of primary cilia underlie multiple human diseases and are hallmarks of malignancy. The RNA silencing pathway is involved in the post-transcriptional silencing of > 50% of mRNA that occurs within GW/P bodies. GW/P bodies are found throughout the cytoplasm and previously published live cell imaging data suggested that in a malignant cell type (U2OS), two GW/P bodies reside at the centrosome during interphase. This led us to investigate if a similar relationship exists in primary cells and if the inhibition of the miRNA pathway impairs primary cilium formation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Two GW/P bodies as marked by GW182 and hAgo2 colocalized to the basal body of primary human astrocytes as well as human synoviocytes during interphase and specifically with the distal end of the basal body in the pericentriolar region. Since it is technically challenging to examine the two centrosomal GW/P bodies in isolation, we investigated the potential relationship between the global population of GW/P bodies and primary ciliogenesis. Astrocytes were transfected with siRNA directed to GW182 and hAgo2 and unlike control astrocytes, a primary cilium was no longer associated with the centrosome as detected in indirect immunofluorescence assays. Ultrastructural analysis of siRNA transfected astrocytes revealed that knock down of GW182, hAgo2, Drosha and DGCR8 mRNA did not affect the appearance of the earliest stage of ciliogenesis but did prevent the formation and elongation of the ciliary axoneme.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study confirms and extends a previously published report that GW/P bodies reside at the centrosome in U2OS cells and documents that GW/P bodies are resident at the centrosome in diverse non-malignant cells. Further, our study demonstrates that repression of key effector proteins in the post-transcriptional miRNA pathway impairs primary cilium formation.</p
Spacetime Encodings II - Pictures of Integrability
I visually explore the features of geodesic orbits in arbitrary stationary
axisymmetric vacuum (SAV) spacetimes that are constructed from a complex Ernst
potential. Some of the geometric features of integrable and chaotic orbits are
highlighted. The geodesic problem for these SAV spacetimes is rewritten as a
two degree of freedom problem and the connection between current ideas in
dynamical systems and the study of two manifolds sought. The relationship
between the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, canonical transformations, constants of
motion and Killing tensors are commented on. Wherever possible I illustrate the
concepts by means of examples from general relativity. This investigation is
designed to build the readers' intuition about how integrability arises, and to
summarize some of the known facts about two degree of freedom systems. Evidence
is given, in the form of orbit-crossing structure, that geodesics in SAV
spacetimes might admit, a fourth constant of motion that is quartic in momentum
(by contrast with Kerr spacetime, where Carter's fourth constant is quadratic).Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
