Changing the Habitat at Academic Conferences: Using a Learning Ecosystem with Active Learning During a Panel Presentation
Abstract
In order to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of an active learning event during a panel presentation at an academic conference, Mercer University librarians presenting at the Georgia Libraries Conference switched the traditional way panel presentations are modeled. Instead of the question and answer session following a brief overview of the presentation, we moved our physical position in the room, closer to the participants in order to have a more intimate conversation with attendees. Using two active learning techniques, discussion and brainstorming, the presenters started a conversation with attendees about project ideas involving teaching faculty members, librarians, and students and how this type of learning ecosystem would work or already works at their institutions. Though each librarian in the discussion and brainstorming session varied in approach and their types of projects, the model of the ecosystem remained consistent. Our team of librarians then proceeded to test whether or not an active learning event could take place during our presentation
Chemical Abundance Gradients in the Star-Forming Ring Galaxies
Ring waves of star formation, propagating outwardly in the galactic disks,
leave chemical abundance gradients in their wakes. We show that the relative
[Fe/O] abundance gradients in ring galaxies can be used as a tool for
determining the role of the SNIa explosions in their chemical enrichment. We
consider two mechanisms which can create outwardly propagating star forming
rings in a purely gaseous disk -- a self-induced wave and a density wave, and
demonstrate that the radial distribution of the relative [Fe/O] abundance
gradients does not depend on the particular mechanism of the wave formation or
on the parameters of the star-forming process. We show that the [Fe/O] profile
is determined by the velocity of the wave, initial mass function, and the
initial chemical composition of the star-forming gas. If the role of SNIa
explosions is negligible in the chemical enrichment, the ratio [Fe/O] remains
constant throughout the galactic disk with a steep gradient at the wave front.
If SNIa stars are important in the production of cosmic iron, the [Fe/O] ratio
has gradient in the wake of the star-forming wave with the value depending on

Metal-rich absorbers at high redshifts: abundance patterns
(Abbreviated) From six spectra of high-z QSOs, we select eleven metal-rich,
Z>=Z_solar, and optically-thin to the ionizing radiation, N(HI)<10^17 cm^-2,
absorption systems ranging between z=1.5 and z=2.9 and revealing lines of
different ions in subsequent ionization stages. The majority of the systems (10
from 11) show abundance patterns which relate them to outflows from low and
intermediate mass stars. All systems have sub-kpc linear sizes along the
line-of-sight with many less than 20 pc. In several systems, silicon is
deficient, presumably due to the depletion onto dust grains in the envelopes of
dust-forming stars and the subsequent gas-dust separation. At any value of
[C/H], nitrogen can be either deficient, [N/C]0, which
supposes that the nitrogen enrichment occurs irregularly. In some cases, the
lines of MgII 2796, 2803 appear to be shifted, probably as a result of an
enhanced content of heavy isotopes 25Mg and 26Mg in the absorbing gas relative
to the solar isotopic composition. Seven absorbers are characterized by low
mean ionization parameter U, log U<-2.3, among them only one system has a
redshift z>2 whereas all others are found at z ~= 1.8. Comparing the space
number density of metal-rich absorbers with the comoving density of
star-forming galaxies at z ~= 2, we estimate that the circumgalactic volume of
each galaxy is populated by 10^7 - 10^8 such absorbers with total mass
<=1/100th of the stellar galactic mass. Possible effects of high metal content

Validation of the Exoplanet Kepler-21b using PAVO/CHARA Long-Baseline Interferometry
We present long-baseline interferometry of the Kepler exoplanet host star
HD179070 (Kepler-21) using the PAVO beam combiner at the CHARA Array. The
visibility data are consistent with a single star and exclude stellar
companions at separations ~1-1000 mas (~ 0.1-113 AU) and contrasts < 3.5
magnitudes. This result supports the validation of the 1.6 R_{earth} exoplanet
Kepler-21b by Howell et al. (2012) and complements the constraints set by
adaptive optics imaging, speckle interferometry, and radial velocity
observations to rule out false-positives due to stellar companions. We conclude
that long-baseline interferometry has strong potential to validate transiting
extrasolar planets, particularly for future projects aimed at brighter stars

Considering the role of cognitive control in expert performance

Dreyfus and Dreyfus’ (1986) influential phenomenological analysis of skill acquisition proposes that expert performance is guided by non-cognitive responses which are fast, effortless and apparently intuitive in nature. Although this model has been criticised (e.g., by Breivik Journal of Philosophy of Sport, 34, 116–134 2007, Journal of the Philosophy of Sport, 40, 85–106 2013; Eriksen 2010; Montero Inquiry:An interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy, 53, 105–122 2010; Montero and Evans 2011) for over-emphasising the role that intuition plays in facilitating skilled performance, it does recognise that on occasions (e.g., when performance goes awry for some reason) a form of ‘detached deliberative rationality’ may be used by experts to improve their performance. However, Dreyfus and Dreyfus (1986) see no role for calculative problem solving or deliberation (i.e., drawing on rules or mental representations) when performance is going well. In the current paper, we draw on empirical evidence, insights from athletes, and phenomenological description to argue that ‘continuous improvement’ (i.e., the phenomenon whereby certain skilled performers appear to be capable of increasing their proficiency even though they are already experts; Toner and Moran 2014) among experts is mediated by cognitive (or executive) control in three distinct sporting situations (i.e., in training, during pre-performance routines, and while engaged in on-line skill execution). We conclude by arguing that Sutton et al. Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology, 42, 78–103 (2011) ‘applying intelligence to the reflexes’ (AIR) approach may help to elucidate the process by which expert performers achieve continuous improvement through analytical/mindful behaviour during training and competition
The Cosmological Baryon Density from the Deuterium Abundance at a redshift z = 3.57
We present a measurement of the deuterium to hydrogen ratio in a quasar
absorption system at redshift z = 3.57 towards QSO 1937-1009. We use a two
component fit, with redshifts determined from unsaturated metal lines, to fit
the hydrogen and deuterium features simultaneously. We find a low value of D/H
= 2.3 \pm 0.6 \times 10^{-5}, which does not agree with other measurements of
high D/H (Songaila et al. 1994, Carswell et al. 1994). The absorption system is
very metal poor, with metallicities less than 1/100 solar. Standard models of
chemical evolution show the astration of deuterium is limited to a few percent
from primordial for systems this metal-poor, so we believe our value represents
the primordial one. Using predictions of standard big-bang nucleosynthesis and
measurements of the cosmic microwave background, our measurement gives the

American Gut: An Open Platform For Citizen Science Microbiome Research

Although much work has linked the human microbiome to specific phenotypes and lifestyle variables, data from different projects have been challenging to integrate and the extent of microbial and molecular diversity in human stool remains unknown. Using standardized protocols from the Earth Microbiome Project and sample contributions from over 10,000 citizen-scientists, together with an open research network, we compare human microbiome specimens primarily from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia to one another and to environmental samples. Our results show an unexpected range of beta-diversity in human stool microbiomes compared to environmental samples; demonstrate the utility of procedures for removing the effects of overgrowth during room-temperature shipping for revealing phenotype correlations; uncover new molecules and kinds of molecular communities in the human stool metabolome; and examine emergent associations among the microbiome, metabolome, and the diversity of plants that are consumed (rather than relying on reductive categorical variables such as veganism, which have little or no explanatory power). We also demonstrate the utility of the living data resource and cross-cohort comparison to confirm existing associations between the microbiome and psychiatric illness and to reveal the extent of microbiome change within one individual during surgery, providing a paradigm for open microbiome research and education. IMPORTANCE We show that a citizen science, self-selected cohort shipping samples through the mail at room temperature recaptures many known microbiome results from clinically collected cohorts and reveals new ones. Of particular interest is integrating n = 1 study data with the population data, showing that the extent of microbiome change after events such as surgery can exceed differences between distinct environmental biomes, and the effect of diverse plants in the diet, which we confirm with untargeted metabolomics on hundreds of samples
