    The caddisfly genus Phylocentropus includes 7 extant species globally, of which 5 occur in eastern North America and 2 in eastern Asia. Larvae of the 3 most common North American species [Phylocentropus carolinus Carpenter, P. lucidus (Hagen), and P. placidus (Banks)] were associated with identifiable adults and diagnostic characters are described. Larvae ofthese 3 species may be distinguished by overall length of mature larvae, head color pattern, and number of spines on the hind tibiae. Larvae of other species of this genus are unknown

    The phylogenetic relationships of the species of Padunielia are analyzed based on characters of larvae, pupae, and adults (mainly male genitalia). The genus is monophyletic and most closely related to Psychomyia, and Metalype in the subfamily Psychomyiinae. Nine species groups are suggested. Eight species, including six new to science, are reported from the People's Republic of China for the first time

    On the chain length dependence of local correlations in polymer melts and a perturbation theory of symmetric polymer blends

    The self-consistent field (SCF) theory of dense polymer liquids assumes that short-range correlations are almost independent of how monomers are connected into polymers. Some limits of this idea are explored in the context of a perturbation theory for mixtures of structurally identical polymer species, A and B, in which the AB pair interaction differs slightly from the AA and BB interaction, and the difference is controlled by a parameter alpha Expanding the free energy to O(\alpha) yields an excess free energy of the form alpha z(N)ϕAϕBz(N)\phi_{A}\phi_{B}, in both lattice and continuum models, where z(N) is a measure of the number of inter-molecular near neighbors of each monomer in a one-component liquid. This quantity decreases slightly with increasing N because the self-concentration of monomers from the same chain is slightly higher for longer chains, creating a deeper correlation hole for longer chains. We analyze the resulting NN-dependence, and predict that z(N)=z∞[1+βNˉ−1/2]z(N) = z^{\infty}[1 + \beta \bar{N}^{-1/2}], where Nˉ\bar{N} is an invariant degree of polymerization, and β=(6/π)3/2\beta=(6/\pi)^{3/2}. This and other predictions are confirmed by comparison to simulations. We also propose a way to estimate the effective interaction parameter appropriate for comparisons of simulation data to SCF theory and to coarse-grained theories of corrections to SCF theory, which is based on an extrapolation of coefficients in this perturbation theory to the limit N→∞N \to \infty. We show that a renormalized one-loop theory contains a quantitatively correct description of the NN-dependence of local structure studied here.Comment: submitted to J. Chem. Phy

    Distance and intersection number in the curve graph of a surface

    In this work, we study the cellular decomposition of SS induced by a filling pair of curves vv and ww, Decv,w(S)=S−(v∪w)Dec_{v,w}(S) = S - (v \cup w), and its connection to the distance function d(v,w)d(v,w) in the curve graph of a closed orientable surface SS of genus gg. Efficient geodesics were introduced by the first author in joint work with Margalit and Menasco in 2016, giving an algorithm that begins with a pair of non-separating filling curves that determine vertices (v,w)(v,w) in the curve graph of a closed orientable surface SS and computing from them a finite set of {\it efficient} geodesics. We extend the tools of efficient geodesics to study the relationship between distance d(v,w)d(v,w), intersection number i(v,w)i(v,w), and Decv,w(S)Dec_{v,w}(S). The main result is the development and analysis of particular configurations of rectangles in Decv,w(S)Dec_{v,w}(S) called \textit{spirals}. We are able to show that, in some special cases, the efficient geodesic algorithm can be used to build an algorithm that reduces i(v,w)i(v,w) while preserving d(v,w)d(v,w). At the end of the paper, we note a connection of our work to the notion of extending geodesics.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures.     Brayton heat exchanger unit development program (alternate design)

    A Brayton Heat Exchanger Unit Alternate Design (BHXU-Alternate) consisting of a recuperator, a heat sink heat exchanger, and a gas ducting system, was designed and fabricated. The design was formulated to provide a high performance unit suitable for use in a long-life Brayton-cycle powerplant. Emphasis was on double containment against external leakage and leakage of the organic coolant into the gas stream. A parametric analysis and design study was performed to establish the optimum component configurations to achieve low weight and size and high reliability, while meeting the requirements of high effectiveness and low pressure drop. Layout studies and detailed mechanical and structural design were performed to obtain a flight-type packaging arrangement, including the close-coupled integration of the BHXU-Alternate with the Brayton Rotating Unit (BRU)

    Force-extension relation of cross-linked anisotropic polymer networks

    Cross-linked polymer networks with orientational order constitute a wide class of soft materials and are relevant to biological systems (e.g., F-actin bundles). We analytically study the nonlinear force-extension relation of an array of parallel-aligned, strongly stretched semiflexible polymers with random cross-links. In the strong stretching limit, the effect of the cross-links is purely entropic, independent of the bending rigidity of the chains. Cross-links enhance the differential stretching stiffness of the bundle. For hard cross-links, the cross-link contribution to the force-extension relation scales inversely proportional to the force. Its dependence on the cross-link density, close to the gelation transition, is the same as that of the shear modulus. The qualitative behavior is captured by a toy model of two chains with a single cross-link in the middle.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
