Innovativeness to enlarge digital readiness - How to avoid digital inertia?
Technological developments go fast and are interrelated and multi-interpretable. As consumer needs change, the technological possibilities to meet those needs are constantly evolving and new technology providers introduce new disruptive business models. This makes it difficult to predict what the world of tomorrow will look like for an organization and that makes the risks for organizations substantial. In this context, it is difficult for organizations to determine what constitutes a good strategy to adopt digital developments.
This paper describes a first step of a study with the objective to design a method for organizations to formulate a future-proof strategy in a rapidly changing, complex and ambiguous context. More specifically, this paper describes the results of a sequence of three focus groups that were held with a group of eight experts, with extensive experience as members of the decision making unit in organizations. The objectives of these sessions were to determine possible solutions for the outlined challenge in order to provide direction for continuation and scoping of the following research phases
Stability of Bloch Oscillations in two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates
We investigate analytically, the stability of Bloch waves at the boundary of
the first Brillouin zone in two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates confined in
an optical lattice. Contrary to the single component case, we find here two
critical density regimes which determine the stability of the Bloch waves.
Breakdown of Bloch oscillations appear when n1/n2Nc2, here
Nc1 and Nc2 are some critical values of n1/n2. There is an intermediate regime
between Nc1 and Nc2 where the Bloch oscillations are stable and the condensates
behave like single particles
Creation of solitons and vortices by Bragg reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice
We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice and
harmonic trap. The condensates are set in motion by displacing the trap and
initially follow simple semiclassical paths, shaped by the lowest energy band.
Above a critical displacement, the condensate undergoes Bragg reflection. For
high atom densities, the first Bragg reflection generates a train of solitons
and vortices, which destabilize the condensate and trigger explosive expansion.
At lower densities, soliton and vortex formation requires multiple Bragg
reflections, and damps the center-of-mass motion.Comment: 5 pages including 5 figures (for higher resolution figures please

Two-Dimensional Dynamics of Ultracold Atoms in Optical Lattices
We analyze the dynamics of ultracold atoms in optical lattices induced by a
sudden shift of the underlying harmonic trapping potential. In order to study
the effect of strong interactions, dimensionality and lattice topology on
transport properties, we consider bosonic atoms with arbitrarily strong
repulsive interactions, on a two-dimensional square lattice and a hexagonal
lattice. On the square lattice we find insulating behavior for weakly
interacting atoms and slow relaxation for strong interactions, even when a Mott
plateau is present, which in one dimension blocks the dynamics. On the
hexagonal lattice the center of mass relaxes to the new equilibrium for any
interaction strength.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures; references added; improved figure
Assessment of the genotoxic impact of pesticides on farming communities in the countryside of Santa Catarina State, Brazil
The aim of this study was to assess the use of pesticides on farms located in the Lambedor River watershed in Guatambu, State of Santa Catarina, as well as to determine, by micronucleus testing, the risk of genotoxic impact. Samples from locally collected Cyprinus carpio, Hypostomus punctatus, Rhamdia quelen and Oreochromis niloticus gave evidence of a mean increase in micronuclei frequency from 6.21 to 13.78 in 1,000 erythrocytes, a clear indication of the genotoxic potenciality of pesticide residues in regional dams, and their significant contribution to local environmental contamination
